A big big ask and this forum has more switched on people then I know when it comes to these kind of problems.

I have a Sanyo E60. From my holiday to Vegas took over 250 pictures. On the last night whilst drunk I had a message come up on my camera about formatting it. So not using my brain (not the first time and it won't be the last ) I formatted my camera losing every picture on it.

To say I am gutted is an understatement. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated, I'd even pay an expert (only a small sum like ) if they needed it sent to them to be sorted. Or as feared, Are they lost for good

edit * since said incident i have used it for other pics. A load of music accidently ripped to it as well, which I have since deleted. Used a few programmes such as un-deleted plus, but to no avail

Because there was data saved since the format, it's a pretty safe bet that you have lost some of your photographs for good. Try using this software on your formatted memory card, you should be able to dig some of your photographs up.

Okay, this is what I remember from my memory card buggering up a couple of years ago...

When you do a format on a camera's memory card from within the camera, it's usually just a "Quick Format". This means that your card's pictures are not lost permanently, but instead are "hidden" (imagine a layer being applied over them) and this is why your card shows as empty.

Now, if no data is saved over this layer, then it's reasonably easy and relatively cheap to remove the "layer" and get your photos back. But if you then begin to save stuff over them, like new pictures, music and things like that, then that "layer" then gets fixed in place, and it becomes harder and harder (and more expensive) to get older things restored.

I'm not making myself 100% clear but I think I've got the gist of what I was trying to say across.

doh! It never worked. Found loads of old pics from previous holidays, but nothing from current one. Don't want to buy the programme to recieve the files to find out I can't get them off current holiday. Gutted, but cheers

I know, it's hard for us Invernessians to be great all the time but we aim to please...

Any more tips since Jay7 advice as so close. Also any of these sites free as you down load the trial but have to pay if you want to get the pictures (if that makes sense)

Not really in the same vain but one of my xD cards corrupted and I couldn't get the pictures off the card and had to format it. After doing this I took it to Jessops who were able to recover the images that I had "lost" plus some others that I hadn't seen in ages that I never knew I had. They all get stuck on a CD for you and this service cost £10.

Firstly, don't save anything else onto the card as it will simply overwrite more of the photos you want to get back (and saving one photo doesn't equate to one more photo being lost - you could be losing many many more).

The format doesn't delete the pictures, it just changes some values so that the data is not recognised as a valid file. On a simple level the recovery software locates the data and re-identifies it as a "file". If, however, the data has already been overwritten then it is effectively lost.

I found a program through Google about 18 months ago which worked very well. I think it was this one:

Card Recovery

It has a free download, which lets you see what photos it is able to recover. You can then choose whether it is worthwhile buying the full product (about £25), which lets you actually recover the files. You might be able to find something cheaper - I had time (and marital!) pressures and had to get the photos back asap

I fear I lost the lot. Upon losing my photo's on holiday with a day to go, i went mad on my camera on the final day taking loads of photos. Then when i plugged it in once i got back, god knows what i done, but about 100 songs from my windows media player downloaded themselves onto my camera.

What is strange is, on the programme Jay7 found, It found all my old pics from last year in Vegas, but none from this year.

I do apperciate everyone's efforts on this thread though, even if it does not work for me, hopefully it may work for someone else.
