Just purchased this today. I've not bought this for a few years but since there is the oppertunity for good online play on the PS3 I thought I'd take the plunge.

Anyone have the game and want a game sometime. I'll have Vince Young rip you a new arsehole biggrin.gif

In all honesty I ain't that good.

Got to say, I don't think I've ever played an American football game on the computer, ever! Same for ice hockey, and if it wasn't for Imagine's "World Series Baseball"...

..on the C64 I don't think I could name one American sport I could be bothered playing, let alone actually watch.

That's not to say Madden isn't a good game, just I can't see what American sports offer.

Wow, I think I actually agree with you.

However, NHL 94 on the Megadrive was good for a laugh.

To you perhaps. Not for me. And certainly not as a computer game.

The first madden was awesome, played it loads, each game since has been tweaked and improved and made more realistic.

Ive only played madden 09 a little bit since getting it, its a great game, with superb graphics and realism, but american football is always inherently flawed as a computer game because defending is boring and only attacking is fun.

I cant see any logical reason why that would be, other than the fact you dont like american sports. They have as much to offer as any other sport if you're a fan of the sport.

Same as football games then?

Not really, in football games you are attacking and defending perhaps seconds apart, while in american football you can be defending constantly for minutes at a time.

Not really, American sports tend to be delivered in 10 minute slots so that they can have adverts. That always distracts me.

Basketball I've never been a fan off, it looks silly. While the court has stayed the same the players are now all 7' something. 3 strides and they are the other end of the court. It looks like there is no strategy (although there must be) and it's nothing more than tit for tat running up 50 yards of gym hall.

American Football is laughable as a sport, in fact it's not a sport, let's lay this one to rest. It's a non stop rolling advert in between some blokes in ridiculous padding bang into each other.

Baseball is sort of interesting as there is some action, but again very little of it is actually hits..

Oh, I just can't be fucked typing it out, the *main* American sports are dull. Dull, dull, dull. None of them have the action, pace, and ability to change within seconds as *real* football does. Rugby is a considerably better game than their football and I'd even watch cricket before I would baseball. As for ice hockey? You're kidding me right?

Extremely short sighted and stereotypical tosh.

While basketball and hockey aren't my cup of tea I still respect them as sports and watch them on occasion.

Baseball and "football" however are fantastic sports to watch. I actually like the stop/start nature of them as it gives a chance for the commentators to reflect on the last play/pitch.

250 million Americans surely can't be wrong. To be honest I've watched more boring games of soccer than any baseball/football game I've seen. There's always something interesting to see as it's basically impossible to get a dull game.

Stop being set in your ways and actually sit down and watch a game. Pick a team and watch away.

Baseball is a funny game to watch and play, its definetly a sport you get more out of if you support and follow a team, i love it though, watch 2 or 3 games a week.

Id watch basketball more if it had better coverage here, it can translate into a good game, but again, it was pretty much nailed by games a couple of years ago, its subtle refinements these days. Hockey i find better to play than watch, i just really cant follow the puck when watching it on tv, perhaps HD would make it more watchable, but on setanta its nigh on impossible to follow whats going on.

You are aware that the reason they wear padding is because people used to die, yes thats right, die, whilst playing it?

If you don't follow, or as in this case, have the first clue about a sport, you'd be better keeping your opinions to yourself really. That way you avoid sounding kinda silly. wink.gif

Och, now, you are not telling me that there is a difference between the physical force used in American football and rugby (either league or union). The only difference is the padding. While we are at it, rugby is considerably more fun to watch.

Have you ever watched American football perchance? I have played Rugby before and I can tell you that it is nothing like American Football. In American Football you run into each other head on and the players are far bigger and hit with more force. That is the reason they have to wear all the padding.

BTW, just ordered Madden 09 for PS2, because being a poor bugger I only have a PS2 and a Wii (and Madden sucks on the Wii).

Yes I have watched American football. I've also seen American football of the past. The reason they can
bang into each other is down to the padding. There is the same amount of force used in rugby, just in a different way. More so with union than league mind.

Hockey is Canadian, better than (real) football and requires plenty of skill, and exciting to watch wink.gif

Pussy rugby and Baseball can go to hell mind.

In fact good Madden story, a friend of mine is obsessed with the US and the NFL, and one time I played him at Madden 0...7 I think. First time i'd picked the game up, on a bammy console, had no idea what any of the things with the lines and letters and stuff pointing everywhere meant, just jabbed and ran whenever I had the ball, and was up 34-14 by halftime before he gave up, citing "our bad recievers that year" as a reason laugh.gif

Ed - Don't forget NASCAR as an American "sport" How any fat rednecks have the patience to watch that is beyond me.

That's exactly the point, only drunken, inbred hicks watch NASCAR.

Youre right, the reason they can hit so hard is partly because of the padding and wearing a helmet. What you've actually grasped, im a round about kinda way, is that these actually give more protection to the hitter rather than the hittee. Players dont wear full body armour and even the parts that are covered dont give much protection to a well paced helmet coming at you at full pelt. Get someone to put on a crash helmet and get them to run at you about kidney height and you'll begin to understand.

When I played American football many moons ago I saw a guy get cleaned knocked out by one of my team mates who creamed him on the side of the head helmet to helmet. He didnt even have the ball AND this was under-18s wink.gif
