Right,
I've just bought a wireless router and to set it up it needs to be connected to my modem using an ethernet cable. The problem is that my modem only has two cables coming out of it - a usb cable that connects it to the desktop and the one that connects it to the phone line.
What I want to know is is there any way of connecting the two using some sort of (inexpensive) gizmo, do I need a new modem or should I just return the router and give up? Please bear in mind that I'm almost totally clueless in these matters.
Thanks

If you have a wireless router, wouldn't you use that to connect to your phone socket for internet access?
Then you'd either use a built in wireless card or get a wireless network USB connector?
If you want to connect some computers wired, but others wireless, you should be able to use an ethernet cable connecting your computer directly to the router.
For the wireless router to be plugged into phone socket directly would that not require it to have a built in adsl modem which I don't think this has, I just bought the cheapest one available off amazon, and in the instructions and on the box it tels me to plug the router into the modem.

You've bought the wrong type of router.
You need one with a built-in ADSL modem; the one you have is for cable broadband connections where the modem has an RJ45 port.

No doubt he's bought the wrong kind of router. But RJ45 connection is just for cable modems - you can get adsl modems with an RJ45 port. Like
this.
TBH though, at that price you'd probably be better off selling the router and buying a modem/router combo - like the Netgear DG834G, which will do the job of both.

Our Netgear DG834G frequently overheats and every time the local area's network goes down, we have to get the settings redone

.
That said, others have had no problems with theirs.

Well yea, but you don't really find many ISP's giving those away free so although a normal router can, strictly speaking, be used with ADSL, you'd be hard pressed to find it in practice.
Thanks for your help guys. I normally do a lot more research into these sort of things before buying them I guess this teach to be less spontaneous in future.

Unless you buy the modem I linked too

Not sure what difference it makes who gives them away, the guy has a router and wanted a specific solution.

How about selling the router you bought by accident on ebay, and using those funds to contribute towards an ADSL all in one?

And no-one in their right mind would buy it, when they can get
this for £35
on the High Street (basically...PCW online prices are close to High Street anyway).

It makes no difference...except that unless you get one of those modems free from your ISP (which you won't), there's bugger all reason to buy a non-ADSL router.

And I told him he bought the wrong router...which is correct.
I'd say you have the wrong kind of modem - phone up your isp and they'll send you the right type for free. That happened to me when I first moved into my flat in glasgow (on cable), and to my mate in lanark (on bt).

I'm with Tiscali and i phoned them up and was given a free wireless router, which I've had no problems with, in exchange i had to commit to another 12 months. Well I've been with them for years already so it wasn't a problem and the contract is with Tiscali not the package so i can upgrade and downgrade during the 12 months. Always worth phoning your isp to find out what's what or even shoping around for a new package that includes a free router.

I know, thats what I said in my second paragraph that you carefully ommitted

But you told him that it was because it was for cable modems, which was totally wrong. I was simply pointing that out and giving the guy an alternative.

No, he has bought the wrong kind of router.
Worth trying his ISP to see if he can get a freebie, but from what he's posted theres nothing wrong with it.

Having just read the battering he was getting last night on the post match thread he was probably just in a bad mood
But, no, you're not being harsh
