Enigma
Several foreign football clubs are involved in other sports, for example Kaunas have a basketball team and HJK in Finland have an ice hockey side. Are there any instances of this being the case in scottish football, past or present. I am sure a scottish side was born out of a cricket team.

Rangers briefly had a basketball team (late 80s I think) but it didn't seem to last long.

Aye, we were born out of members of the Saint John's Toun(ancient name for Perth) Cricket Club. The players got bored during the winter so decided to start playing football.

The founders of Queen's Park were originally from the North of Scotland and spent their evenings on the Queen's Park Recreation Ground practising events you would see at a highland games ("Hammer throwing, putting the ball, tossing the caber, pole vaulting, and other muscular exercises" according to the golden jubilee book by Richard Robinson) when they saw a group of boys from the YMCA playing football and took the sport up.

Rangers were originally members of Clydesdale cricket club who were looking for something to do over the winter.

A lot of the original clubs, certainly at a lower level, were general sports clubs with a football section.

There's a St Mirren Basketball team in Paisley, I've no idea how closely they're linked with the football team though.

I think they used to be called Murray International Metals, but they may have been renamed as Rangers when David Murray got involved with Rangers.

MIM and Rangers were seperate teams. Rangers' name was Linpride Rangers (Linpride being a double glazing company, I think).

Many years ago I had the Articles of Association for many Scottish League clubs as part of some research. Articles are required for any Limited Company and set out the parameters of their business and regulations about shareholdings, qualification for directorship etc. THey are available, at a fee, by visiting the Registrar of Companies in Edinburgh. A common section in the Articles is a list of sports which the club 'reserves the right' to participate in - from memory I've seen baseball, cricket, hockey, rugby, quoiting, ploughing, swimming, water polo, badminton, croquet, tennis etc etc. Very few, if any, have ever taken up these options.

Vale of Leven were a shinty and football club in the late 19th century. I think they won the Scottish Cup in football and the Celtic Society Cup in shinty in the same year. A few other football clubs had shinty teams at that stage or were born out of shinty clubs. Believe it or not Nottingham Forest were apparently actually a shinty club at first, formed by exiled Scots ohmy.gif .

On the name issue our official name is Alloa Football and Athletic Club.

St Mirren Basketball

There is no link at all apart from name. When the Basketball team first started 12 years ago they asked St.Mirren for the link-up but as the Football team were skint they were said they can use the name but will receive no sponsorship. I think apart from Tony Fitzpatrick and some players showing up years ago that was about your whack. Shame really, cause when I was part of the set-up there were sometimes crowds of 700 at the senior games but number seem to have dwindled.

There is a Ross County Cricket Club huh.gif

Bon Accord had a cricket team.
They also had a football team. rolleyes.gif
Think they once lost a cup tie 36-0 at Arbroath.

I used to regularly go to the Rangers Basketball games at Coasters in Falkirk. There was a bit of a rivalry with MIM Livingston and Bracknell Tigers. Kevin Cadle of Sky Sports NFL fame was a former coach of the Gers side also.
I seem to remember Linlithgow Rose had a cycling side a few years back but i'm not sure if it had anything to do with the football team

The sign at dear old Brockers used to advertise "Falkirk Football and Athletic Club" but do not know if we ever were athletic, so to speak!

We have a Formula one car, but it isn't in the top racing. It's raced against other clubs. Was unveiled at Ibrox mid last season and has already had an outing.

That should count, should it not?
