If Hutton's still injured, move Whittaker to right back and put Alexander at left back.
I know that Whittaker's better on the right, but Alexander's just too old now and although he's done well in the past, I can't help but feel that his time's up. I'd still have him over Gary fucking Naysmith.

This may be a bit too positive as we're not too suited to attacking and there's a real chance of losing this one, so if we're going 4-5-1 I'd bring Hartley into the midfield, I'd be willing to give Boyd a chance as a lone striker - he doesn't run around a lot, but he's got a physical presence, and he's still more likely to score than Miller, so it'd be Miller dropped in that case.
BadgersNadgers
In either an orthodox 4-4-2 with Fletcher or Brown on the right, or in a diamond with Hartley at the back and either of Robson, Brown or Fletcher behind the front pairing. I'd like to see whoever plays up front play as a more out-and-out striker (although we all know Boyd won't play), because it doesn't work when both McFadden and Miller like to drop back and play the channels.

1. Gordon
2. Whittaker (RB) / Hutton if fit
3. Naysmith (LB)
4. Caldwell (CB)
5. McManus (CB)
6. Hartley (DM)
7. Brown (CM)
8. Fletcher (CM)
9. Robson (AM)
10. McFadden (CF)
11. Miller (CF)

Christophe Berra and Darren Barr did themselves no disservice when they came on and I hope to see one of them displacing Gary Caldwell through time. Obviously when Sir Barry sees an opposition he fancies play he displaces Robson or Hartley, or McFadden / Miller if we revert to 4-5-1 for the Norwegians and Dutch.

I would really like to see us go out of the blocks with this at home but I think its too adventurous for a first competitive game, away from home, that isn't strictly must win.

If I was the Scotland manager then I would pick myself. It woudnt be for the greater good but I would love to have a cap and is the main reason why I should never be Scotland manager.

probably still a bit too attacking, maybe Robson in for Morrison and shuffle Brown out towards the right.

An attacking 451 that gives us both the solidity of a 5 man midfield but also gives us a bit more attacking thrust. It also allows us to change to 442 at any point without the need for substitutions.

I think some people on here play football manager a bit much. Fletcher or hartley at right back? Nonsense.

Not that I would consider playing them there unless things got really really desperate but if I remember rightly Hartley has played right back before.

Fletcher played a handful of games right back for Man Utd last season. Therefore, as a stop gap would play him.

I would play Fletcher and Miller in a slightly withdrawn role that could double up as five in midfield with an instruction for them to get forward from wide positions as soon as possible.

I don't see Miller being used anywhere but down the centre.... and surely we would want somebody who can cross the ball on the right. if we do play that formation then i'd expect only McFadden to drop back and make it a 442 when we don't have the ball. Its attacking and maybe work against smaller teams at home. Hutton is back in training I think, whether he'll be deemed fit enough to play in 2 weeks time is uncertain though as spurs will want to protect him

Against opposition such as Macedonia we should be playing an attacking style of play and not stick to the 4-5-1 formation that does not work against smaller teams. Although when it is the game against the dutch of course we should revert back to the defensive formation.

In my opinion i wouldnt have brown on the wing. Didnt do to much v northern ireland. Id rather have him through the middle. Fletcher on the wing i would though as he is being doing well there for Man United this season

Hutton-----McManus-----Caldwell-----Naysmith

----------------Boyd---------Miller------------------

I would say McManus and Caldwell are our strongest central defensive partnership because of their understanding and experience playing alongside one another at club level. If Hutton isn't fully fit, I would have McNaughton at right back.

Thought Brown was excellent against Northern Ireland, and Thomson played fairly well, so they would be starters. Morrison made a promising start, but I thought Robson was more of an attacking threat when he came on.

I'm not convinced the McFadden-Miller partnership is the best. I would play Boyd from the start simply because he's our best goalscoring threat and bring on McFadden later if we need a creative spark.
