What games that have been recent (within the last 5 years) do you look back on as a classic?

I would say the 2-0 Morton game and the 1-1 draw against Brechin that kept us in the first division.
loyal-blue
Stranraer 5-4 Hamilton
In the first division!
Class!
Paco
None, they've all been shite.

In all seriousness, I suppose the 5-1 win at Central Park was quite sweet. The Morton game as you mentioned was really good, and although that Brechin game you posted was probably a terrible match, it secured our place in the First Division, so it was very good. The St Johnstone Challenge Cup match last season had an excellent atmopshere after a great performance, but ultimately we got beat.

Severe lack of memorable matches these last few years. unsure.gif

Considering the length of time I have supported Raith and the number of games I have watched, there has been nothing in the last 5 years I would describe as 'Classic'

4-2 win over East Fife in the first leg of the 06/07 play-off final at Firhill, how we only won by two goals I'll never know, the football we played that night was simply superb, how the game should be played.

Also five goal thrashings of Montrose and the Dirty Rovers at Hampden that season, matches where we just clicked and were playing great football.

Dumbarton 4 Ayr United 5

We were 4-1 up in what was almost a relegation decider.Sons pulled it back to 4-4 and Chris Robertson saved us with the 5th.

That was a hell of a rollercoster that day!

Included in the goals was this beauty from Kieran McAnespie. The short barked "yes!" you can hear as the ball leaves his foot is me. smile.gif

Not been many in recent years but my favourite was the 4-3 midweek win at Stranraer after being 3-0 down a result which would have almost certainly relegated us to the Third Division.
The team we had back then weren't as good as the one we have now but that type of fight is something we need desperately.

The 4-0 victory against Morton at Cappielow, with Paul Weaver scoring a screamer of a volley.
Raving On
Our playoff games two seasons ago were superb, particularly the 2-2 draw with Airdrie at Forthbank. We should have won about 5-0 but needed 2 last minute goals to take a draw from it. Paul Nugent scored the best goal in history after skinning about five defenders then curling a 20 yard shot into the top corner then Chris Aitken tanked home a free-kick from 25 yards. Fuckin' magic biggrin.gif

That was also made memorable because it was the game that Gareth Wardlaw, yes that Gareth Wardlaw, scored twice, yes, twice in the one game.

Quite enjoyed the 4-3 home win over Alloa in the first Reid era. 3-1 down at half time to 10 men of Alloa, we mounted a Stewart Kean-led comeback and won the game late on.

Airdrie were by far the better side in the first half and deserved their lead.

The 2nd half of that match remains the best I've ever seen the Albion play. Relentless attacking, superb passing, and throughly destroyed the opposition. It would have been a travesty had we not got the two late goals.

remeber that game vividly, we were 3 nil down in the first 13 minutes and fought back with andy rogers scoring a great double, a few weeks later in the last game of the season partick were pummelling us and again we pulled back with andy rogers scoring two in two minutes but ultimately we lost the match and were relegated and thistle got the points they needed to make the play offs

No match post 2000 can even be considered as "classic".
Gowfer_Lichtie
2005/06 season when we scraped into the playoffs in Division 3. We were really struggling before John McGlashan changed things round and we went on a great run of performances, the stand out being a 4-1 demolition of Cowdenbeath on January 26. Scorers were Gavin Swankie, Jay Stein, Paul Watson and Steven Cook. This was the game where a Cowden player was sent off for throwing the ball at an elderly Arbroath fan and another Cowden player was sent off for taking out John McGlashan. Much hilarity when John subbed himself and chased the guy up the tunnel!

Also that season, 1 April against Queens Park was a great game. We were really pushing for the playoffs and Queens were also in the mix. It was a great game, with Andy Reilly coming on a sub in the last 15 mins, collecting the ball about 30 yards out, beating two players and firing it into the far corner.

Happy days! smile.gif

That was an excellent game in a great season! In the last few years, I have fond memories of when we beat Stenny 2-1. It was an utterly dull game where nothing happened and we were marginally less shit than them...but then they scored out of nothing in the 80th minute.

No problem for us, up popped Raeside a few seconds later to get the equaliser, and suddenly the entire support was on our feet shouting the team on. We pressed them, harried them, and we felt like we were going to score. Sure enough, deep into injury time, Kevin Webster got the ball and fired it into the net with practically the last kick of the game.

The place went mental and I will always have good memories of Webster because of that game! biggrin.gif

I try to forget him, but the game Iain talks about was about two years after he left.
davidkennedyshand
It was probably the display in that Alloa game that got Brian Reid the job after we'd toyed with Neil Twatt for a while.

The display of attacking football in that game was superb. The formation was 2-0-8 at times.Even Paul Hyslop was immense in that game when he came on as sub.

You missed the best bit - Kevin Webster running over to the Maroon-clad support to celebrate and not realising he was at the 'home' end of the stand. laugh.gif

From the same season the mid-week tie against Elgin in the middle of our 13 game unbeaten run as we chased Berwick could be described as 'classic'.

Black had given us the lead before MacKay equalised before half-time. However in the 90th min Dobbins sailed through the box to power home the winner.

And despite not actually scoring Paul Watson was shown a second yellow for over zealous celebrating which was quite an acievment.

The final seconds of the game led to the now infamous Joe 'Joseph' Savage court case and Arbroath gaining some bad press in the Daily Diana.

Going to have to agree with the older Raith fans here, not seen anything in recent years that's worth the decription.

Makes me realise how spoiled I was in the 90s, not only by Raith but down in England too, saw some really great moments, but it's been a dry spell recently.

Was that the game that Conway scored the corner?

The most incredible match I've been at was when we lost 5-4 to the Shire at Gayfield in 1992.

We were leading 4-2 with seven minutes left, and I think we may have been 4-1 up at some point, yet somehow contrived to blow the points when they scored a winner right at the death. Unfortunately our keeper Derek Balfour, who is an Arbroath boy, had a complete nightmare and subsequently received an absolute kicking in the local rags match report which he never bounced back from.

I can't for the life of me remember any of the goals, or any other incidents of note, but can still vividly recall sense of disbelief and bemusement amongst the Arbroath support as the events unfolded.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to shudder at the memory.

I'm of the same mind. Although, the 5-2 victory over Stirling in 2005, after being 2-1 down on 50 minutes sticks in my mind.

Funnily enough, when I was thinking about the Rovers in the good old days recently, I recalled a 3-2 game against Airdrie when we won the league in the 94/95 season. If I still remembered that after all this time it must be a veritable classic.

I have flashbacks of THAT game still! sad.gif An ex-Lichtie Paul Roberts bagged a hat-trick! The snatching defeat from the jaws of victory was meant for THAT game dry.gif The goals flew in at the harbour end, as i stook in total shock at the "Pleasure"land end. Agree with most Raith fans in that we haven't had any classics. A few memorable ones, the stirling one mentioned and a few weeks later a game against Ayr when we were 2-0 down at half time. We came back to 3-2 over the course of the 2nd half only to conceed in the 94th minute to a freekick when Ally Brown was supposedly injured. 5-1 win against Cowden to simply due to the fact the Cowden fans had mocked us all season long for leaving 5 minutes before the end of the game....they left at 4-1 down at half time which was brilliant.

Davie Sinclair's last minute winner? It sparked the ten game winning streak that made the season, so yeah it's a very fond memory, but I don't think the game was a classic in itself. In fact I can remember nothing else about it offhand.

The 3-2 win over Killie in the cup run was a genuine classic in its own right though, even without the knowledge of what happened in subsequent rounds. Cameron's overhead kick and hat-trick.

Our opening game of the season v Peterhead was a classic.
