Full Version: No Excuses Now That The Huns Are Out

With the huns going out tonight, we are now guaranteed the whole tv revenue pot for Scotland as opposed to sharing it out with them. There was no excuses before tonight for not spending between now and the end of August and strengthing the team. Now, with a few extra million coming into us, it is unthinkable for us to remain inactive on he signing front.

Agreed, although I think Lawell is working behind the scenes currently, the huns going out gives us an extra £2 mil? get it spent please.

I'm glad we don't rush in and let players and clubs hold us to ransom, i'm sure we will sign a couple of players, but i won't be waiting to pounce (like some) if we don't.

Apart from a left back and possibly centre back, do you really think you need many more players? With the current squad you should win the league and reach last 16 of champions league, hopefully further. Plenty of options for midfield and upfront and slowly bleed a few youngsters through. Don't think Strachen would want to unsettle his squad to much. I guess it also depends on getting Balde off the wage bill.

A few extra million in Gordon Strachan's pocket won't make a blind bit of difference.

A left-back and a centre back are our priority. Attacking wise, we have shown time and time again that we have can be improved. Domestically we struggle to put away teams and in Europe we are more often than not carry little threat. The lack of pace running throughout the team being most notably lacking at that level. I will be amazed if we get to the last 16 of the Chumpions League this season if we do not seriosuly strengthen the starting XI.

Actually that's quite true. As much as I want us to go out and spend money as we need to to, I don't really trust Strachan to do so.

If I was at Celtic I'd be trying to snaffle Coloccini from Depor before Newcastle get him, although the transfer fee (if not the wages) are probably out of the reach of all non-Prem clubs and I think Coloccini has his heart set on the Prem anyway.

For left-back Cyril Rool of Nice, while old and slow, would probably be cheap and able to do a job for one season. IMO.

Personally, I wish Celtic all the best in Europe. It's important that Scotland does well in European club competitions and having seen my team lose tonight, all the more important for all our other Scottish clubs competing to do well.

That aside, I do think you saying PLG got further in Europe than Walter leads me to ask how Paul Le Guen got on in a European Final.
Were we all in a coma at that point and you know something we don't `da? huh.gif

I'm delighted with the extra cash. I bet there was nobody anywhere outside the Kaunus fans and Vladimir Romanov dancinga round in glee quite like Peter Lawell. I think cash has been the issue up until now, but I ca see Strachan pushing the boat out now and securing the likes of Crosas and Tamas. What signings they would be.

I have faith in Strachan, as I always have. He will lead us to four in a row at a canter. Last season was simply an aberration.

Traynor said on the radio that they'd dropped their interest in Tamas, but you never know. I think we'll get Crosas, and indeed, let's get behind Strachan and direct our vitriol towards the Huns instead, who we'll surely treat very, very badly this season. Onwards and upwards Hoops fans!!

I lambasted the performance by the players of course because I thought tonight was the worst I have ever seen in effort and question the ability of some but I have never ever given up on my football club and I can't recall saying anything about the manager being shite. Maybe you could point that out after you have read the thread properly this time!

However, last season, you weren't always so buoyant about your own team as you are tonight about Rangers defeat. Funny that!
Maybe Celtic winning isn't as important to you as Rangers losing! wink.gif

This is all just lies. I was the one saying it looked hopeless, but that I wasn't giving up hope. I was the one on here falling out with other Celtic fans by saying it wasn't impossible that Rangers would implode.

I have no interest in Rangers losing other than for the comedy value. Of far greater merit for me is the extra cash we rake in for the sudden demise of your "great" football club.

Now now Gallacticos. Don't get all upset and spoil your night after such a great result for you.

We are however Scotlands most successful club and this is just a blip in our history. All clubs have them from time to time. But we will rise again, that's for sure!

i think our top priority should be a left back. hopefully the talk about crosas is just misdirection as i dont think we really need another centre mid. would like to see tamas at paradise though he look pretty good at the euros

Paul le Guen led Rangers to the last-32 of the UEFA Cup, but was sacked before he had a chance to get any further.

Rangers had been very impressive in Europe under le Guen until that point.

Can't argue with your sentiments Carig on Paul Le Guen.

I was a fan of Le Guen and think we lost him far too soon from our club. That was a bad decision IMO as I think long term, he would have been good for Rangers.

Short-termism is a problem for Rangers though. It was very difficult for the fans to give him time because the results were very poor, and he made a few unpopular team selections.

However, in hindsight, it's clear that le Guen was handicapped by the fact that Rangers had finished 3rd the previous season under McLeish, and didn't have the CL money to spend.

Perhaps after the first season of stability and finish second along with a good European run, he would have been able to bring in some higher quality players. People criticised the signing of Sionko, but we saw at Euro 2008 what he could do. Smith shipped him out without giving him a chance, but he is exactly the type of player Rangers now need.

Le Guen picked an attacking team which played nice football, but didn't always get results. Smith's more cautious style was accepted while he got the victories, but now that the results are bad the fans are turning against him.

The quality of the Rangers squad now is worse than when Smith took over.

Losing to a team from Lithuania in the preliminary rounds, a "blip"? laugh.gif

I'm struggling to remember the huns last humiliation of this magnitude.... There was Victoria Zizhkov, but at least they were Czech, a nation with a bit of pedigree...

And Linas Piliabiatis - a numpty shown the door by the jam farts! Imagine the shame!

The team needs major surgery since at least 3/4 of the starting 11 are not good enough.

As strange as it feels to say this, I'm actually not hugely gutted we were knocked out of Europe last night. I think it was because we played so godawfully bad, i don't think we really deserved to go through.

I seriously think that the Celtic board should seize this oppurtunity and turn the screw by splahing out on four or five big time signings.I dont think Celtic have been in such a strong position on and off the field and we should capitilize on it. If the board dont see this we will never improve as a club.
