I seem to recall a Champions League game from a few seasons ago between Juventus & Arsenal? I'm sure the crowd was only 6,000 or so? Any details would be appreciated.

I'm sure Juventus had a low 3 figure crowd for a cup tie in the 1990's - at around the same time we were pulling low 3 figure crowds!

Coppa Italia game season 2001/02, Juventus v Sampdoria attracted a "crowd" of 237, in a stadium with a capacity of 67 thousand.

I assume closed doors games don't count but there have been a few big Champions League games that have been in front of no one, such as Roma's games v Leverkusen and Real Madrid in 2004-05. I watched the latter on TV, absolutely bizarre.

Didnt Rangers not play inter infront of closed doors?

Officially closed doors but Rangers had 50 or so "club officials" that I'm sure were heard belting out their particular brand of "folk music".

You always hear that Juve have by far the largest support in Italy, yet I've seen these kind of four-digit crowds a few times. There must be a reason behind it?

The Delli Alpi was rated as shit due to being outside the city and miles away from the mitch, Torino are the city team anyway and have a much bigger local fanbase, Juve's heartland is the South where they often play friendlies, they played Newcastle in Palermo to mark their centenary.

Juve's gates here:

not the best supported side in Italy, up there but not the best.

Juve are by far the best supported club in Italy. The fan base is widespead though and in the city of Turin, Torino have more fans. The Delli Alpi was unpopular from the start with both fans of La Bianconeri and La Granata due to its lack of atmosphere and location outside the city. Inter come 2nd in the fan count with AC Milan 3rd. For confirmation of these facts, I am pretty sure that John Foot's book, A History of Calcio covers this area. Incidentally, for anyone who is interested in Italian football, this is well worth the read.

Don't let facts get in the way of an argument eh? The link I provided shows average attendances across Italy from the 1960s onwards. The Stadio Delle Alpi was only built in 1990 and Juve's crowds prior to that were still many thousands less than likes of Milan or Napoli, or whoever else was pulling in 10,000+ more than them. Since 1962, not once have Juve had the highest average attendance in Italy, and in most years they haven't even been close.

Glory hunters and hangers on are irrelevant when discussing actual attendances.

I never said that Juve had the highest attendance in Italy, only the biggest fanbase. As my quote above suggests, Torino have the main fan base in the city of Turin but if you care to actually read the book in my previous link, Juve are far and away the most popular team in Italy.

I have no intention of reading the book, I'm a Scottish football fan though I did enjoy the Castel di Sangrio story.

A team's popularity is judged on how many actually go through the turnstiles to watch - not how many hangers on and glory hunters claim to support them, a bit like the Old Firm in this country and Man U or Liverpool down south.

The question was asked: if Juve are the best supported club in Italy (as you suggest) why do they get rotten Euro attendances. Answer is simple - their league gates aren't that much to shout about either. You tried to account for their poor league gates by saying it's all down to people not liking the Stadio Delle Alpi but the facts are there that their league gates were not the highest in Italy the 30 odd years before it was built either.

There are many European countries where the national cup competition doesn't get people excited and games attract low crowds.

Totally different in the UK of course, where we have a cup culture and many fans will come crawling out of the woodwork if their teams goes on a decent run.

I don't think domestic cup competitions have come up Central Parker. This was about European ties and league games.

Depends what you define as a 'supporter'.

Fact is, if you asked the majority of people in Italy who they 'supported', Juve would have the biggest fan base.

But that obviously has little reflection on who turns up to games.

These are two huge clubs yet Pollock would probably get a larger crowd for a Glesca Kebab Cup tie against St Anthony's.

The fact is, cup tournaments are not popular in some of the great footballing nations.

I'm sure that was the night that the Binos 'broke' our record low attendance figure in some meaningless Third Division game when we were sitting 2nd bottom.

Are you suggesting a link between the 2? Was it free porn night on the telly or something? wink.gif

Im sure i read somewhere that Torino now have more fans than Juventus because years ago the fans were getting fed up with the increase of prices in football so they decided to make there own club similar to the "FC United of Manchester", the Man United fans that dont want Glaizer at their club etc. etc. So throughout the years more people living in turin started supporting torino instead.

Also, i remember watching a Juventus v Bayern Munich game a few years ago and i think the attendance was 16,000 or something. Im sure there was an english championship game or something the same night that managed to attract more fans.
