Full Version: Morton Sign

Dominic Shimmin, ex Arsenal and QPR is apparently signing for Ton. He played a couple of games for us pre season and was very impressive, especially against league one opposition in the form of Hartlepool.

We apparently have beaten St Mirren for his signature!

We also hear that Kevin Cuthbert will be signed in time for tonights game at Stranraer.
Szamo's_Ammo
He never impressed at Crawley Town.

Gus made him an offer, Shimmin hummed and hawed for too long and it was withdrawn.
MarreZ
He will be good at first division level, he was going to be backup to Potter and Haining, which is why he wasnt keen on joining us.
The Arch
Morton can sign as many defenders as they like because Colin Stewart will still let in clanger after clanger.

It's like Walter Smith thinking that having 9 strikers at Rangers will get them lots and lots of goals.

Bless. The Cat's very much a player who thrives on confidence. Unfortunately for him he's never done much right and thusly drops clangers in every game. It's a vicious circle.

One of my good mates is as blind as a bat without his specs and used to work in the VIP bar of a well known Perth nightspot. He'd forgotten his glasses this particular night and was therefore forced to do his job as best he could in the fashion of Mr Magoo. Late in the evening, a guy came up to the bar and asked my mate whether he'd been at the football that day, to which my mate responded in the affirmative. That day's game had been Matt Glennon's debut between the sticks for Saints and the gentleman with the enquiring mind sought my friend's opinion about the new keeper. What did he think of him? He asked. "Well," said my friend, by now in his element. "It's a relief to have a proper keeper again. He commands his box and he looks much more comfortable dealing with things than Cuthbert. Whenever the ball comes toward Cuthbert, I shite myself. But this guy looks like he can handle anything." After a moment of silence the enquiring gentleman, whose face, remember, was nought but a blur to my friend reached into his inside pocket and produced a match programme from that day's game. My friend waited politely to take the gentleman's order, but instead he slid over the programme, which he'd opened to the squad pages. He pointed toward the picture of the goalkeeper my friend had just savaged and said quietly, "I'm Kevin Cuthbert."

Poor laddie.

Anyway pleased with the signing on Shimmin, he looked really good against Hartlepool and we need some more depth at CB (especially since we tend to play a back 3). Am also pleased with the Cuthbert signing as while he is not a world beater he is still better than Colin Stewart imo.

Why do Morton fans always start threads about players they've signed before they've actually signed? it only leads to ridicule when the bugger off and sign for someone else.

Ex Arsenal defender wink.gif tongue.gif

I'm sure he was just on the periphery of the side.

Point of note. Andy Ross used to be Chelsea's reserve captain, and Jean Yves-Anis used to be a regular in that side. I'm sure Arsenal's reserves were much better though.

he was on the periphery of Crawley Towns side aswell, which makes his time at Arsenal just as important tongue.gif

he looked good for us on trial and is another player over 6 foot which is good and St Mirren offered him a contract and their fans were impressed with him until he didn't get back to them and now theyre doing their usual " he wasn't that good anyway " spiel.

Not too sure about Shimmin, but, Cuthbert would be a great signing.

True version: Morton made a move for Shimmin on Friday and St Mirren tried to get in first. There was only going to be one winner as Gilmour is infamous for his penny-pinching. End of, get over it. laugh.gif
The ghost of Jim Morton
Kev Cuthbert ( or as we know him Bert Tucuth) will do a good job for you guys and I for one was sad to see him go as I think, unlike some of my fellow Saintees, he was a good keeper and did little wrong when called upon. All keepers make mistakes ( except Alan Main wink.gif who I,m told can do know wrong) and Bert is no exception but he,ll do all right for you. smile.gif

Having seen him play for both Morton and the Skunks in recent weeks, I can assure you he's streets ahead of any of your central defenders. cool.gif

Pretty much confirms our first choice formation as 3-4-3/3-5-2.
McManus likely to start when he returns, with at the moment Greacen, Harding, Shimmin and Walker fighting for places.
I'd have savaged your hand and barbecued it for those options last year. smile.gif
Added to a potentially very strong and physical midfield and various forward options, i think Irons has built a very good squad capable of enjoying a good season; possibly top half.
wattie_rojas
Cuthbert is well ropey however he is better than Stewart IMO.

Sums it up well for me.

I'm pleased with this Shimmin fellow, though biggrin.gif

Haven't saw much of Colin Stewart but he must be peesh if Cuthbert is ahead of him, never been impressed with Cuthbert against the Dees.Swankies lob against him kept the Saintees down a couple of seasons ago, when he fell into the net lol . laugh.gif

Stewart had one minor mistake on Saturday in a decent enough performance.
It shouldn't matter if Koko the Clown is in goal so long as we build a cast-iron defensive shield.
Shimmin, McManus and Harding( ph34r.gif ) have all to fight their way into a defence that looked strong on Saturday, albeit against rank opposition.
St Johnstone on Saturday will be a big test.
FTOF_PTFC_1
So Morton will be Shimmying up the league ?
FTOF
Shimmin looked like a fairly decent player and should cope well at 1st division level. He looks good on the ball, wins his fair share of headers and shields the ball well.

He far from match fit though and is even slower than or current central defensive partnership. laugh.gif

We need a taller player who is match fit and can slot in beside Haining straight away.Whether we'll get a player like that before the transfer window shuts is another matter. dry.gif

From watching him in pre-season meaningless games? Why not just go the whole hog, and say he's the best defender in the division. He did play for Arsenal.

He was Arsenal's best defender aswell, just never got a chance because he's english.

Dominic Shimmin was perhaps the biggest prospect in British football since Gary Mabbut broke through in the late 70's. It's a shame Wenger couldn't look past Shimmin's Englishness and let him replace Cygan for a atleast one game.

Shimmin is a cracking player i watched him against Stranraer last night and everything that came his way he either cleared or headed away he is a no-nonsense defender looks capable of defending against the likes of dundee, st johnstone i think he'll be a quality player in the 1st Division.

And Kevin Cuthbert what a goalkeeper what can i say he is far far better than colin stewart. especially his goalkicks he was getting it right up the park into the stranraer penalty area. he only conceeded because the first goal took a deflection right over him, the second was a 1-on-1 which he parried onto the post then in and the 3rd goal was because of his size, it was a volley from about 25 yards which he just couldnt reach.

So if we had Stewart in goal it would have been 6-2?

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif Kinda like the guy who still goes to Cappielow, went on holiday a good few years back to spain. This one day, while sitting at the bar out in the sun, he got talkin to this 'bloke' and so the typical conversation ensued, you know..football, who you support, etc. When Woody mentioned to this 'bloke' that he supported the ton, the other bloke replied "oh aye.."

Woody asked the bloke who he was only to hear the response" Derek Collins...Skipper of Morton, the team YOU support"
