I don't know if you still have the thing with Hearts going anymore but if you did, a successful Hearts in Europe means more cash to spend, maybe more development of young Hearts trainees etc and maybe more investment in farming out young trainees to local junior teams like Haddington to help those young players develop. Structures can change when clubs are living on more cash injection and a feel good factor.
Like I say, I don't know if you still have that relationship with Hearts or a senior team in the East of Scotland but who is to say it would never happen again if you don't have it already!

There was never a formal 'thing' with Hearts. More of a case of who knows who at the time. A wee word with our club statto suggests that the 'thing' lasted 2 or 3 seasons in the early to mid 70s. He was also struggling to think of anybody on Hearts or Hibs books who has been farmed out to the Juniors in recent years. The Edinburgh clubs just doesn't work like that anymore (if they ever did) - preferring to get the players signed up young - therefore providing direct (and much more attractive) competition for the local kids' teams. Not that we begrudge anyone who's good enough for 'jumping ship'. As it happens, the Hearts and Hibs U17s and U19s having been giving Junior and EoS teams a bit of a mauling in pre-season. There doesn't seem much point in farming those players out to a lower standard.

The 'who knows who' bit can still work after a fashion, I'll admit. We've got a young goalie on loan from East Fife for a season and our manager appears to be on nodding terms (at least) with people in the 2nd and 3rd divisions. That may indeed help our cause but it's hardly a direct result of Scottish teams doing well in Europe.

I like to support any Scottish team in Europe, even the old firm but as constant qualification to the Champions League for Rangers and Celtic widens the financial gap between them and the rest, I'm going for the Lithuanians.

Thanks for the reply Millfield. I wish your club well. Do you ever have contact with the OF youth teams or lose players to them...just out of curiosity?

Overall, I just think success at the top level can carry good things to grass roots through a feel good factor and rivalries are usually put to the side when everyone is doing well.

We need strong clubs throughout the country to help the game and less of the `OF and us` syndrome that's plagued the game since the early 80`s!

I'm unaware of any players that have been picked up by the OF. Then again the amalgamation of the Juniors and one of Haddington's Youth clubs is only two years old (and is a rare occurence at this level), so I'm not too familiar with the development side of things. Celtic have, sporadically, held coaching sessions in this neck of the woods but I'm sure that's more PR than searching for new talent.

As I am Scottish and I do not like to see my nation's reputation tarnished by a vile group of supporters, I want Kaunas to go through.
Jim Pansy
I will be rooting for Kaunus only because of my deep rooted and intensely personal hatred of Walter Smith and all he represents. However, in the highly likely event of Rangers going out to a bunch of ghastly clad, Lithuanian tiger lilies, he will of course get away, like his team, Scot (sic) free, and get a free ride from the excellent and discerning Scottish football press, and the majority of the well-educated hoards in the stands... although there are one or two eminently reasonable Rangers fans on this site who have seen through the facade - and get hounded for it.
dogma
Would always want to see a Scottish team do well, especially for the co efficient, but the way that Rangers play in Europe is brutal. Fair dos if it wins you games like last season, but such tactics only ever work in the short term and make for painful viewing ( possibly why the game wasnt shown on TV ). It would maybe do Rangers some good to lose and they might start playing a more ambitious brand of football. Doubt it though.
Stadio Delle Almondvale
I voted Rangers, I am Scottish, they are a Scottish team, it helps the profile of Scottish people and brings money into the Scottish economy.

Conversely, should they go out, am I forgiven for taking the piss?

I voted Rangers.

IMO Its good for scottish football. Mainly because of the co-efficients. More Scottish club in european tornaments entering a later stages has to be a good thing. Champions league games are also great expierience for Scottish internationalists play for the old firm.

I wouldn't be dissapointed if they do get put out tho.

We can do without the huns doing what they do best and rampaging around Europe causing grief and harm to the cities they visit.

Kaunas is a lovely little city. I only hope the knuckle dragging huns don’t leave their mark on it which is likely if they do get pumped out as any decent minded person should be hoping.

I always want ALL Scottish teams to win when playing in Europe.
I hope the whole of Scotland is right behind Queens when we make our Euro debut on 14th August.

Nae worries mate, we're behind you. At least you'll be representing Scotland, GOOD LUCK smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

I won't lend my support to any OLD FIRM team as they do not represent Scotland, until i see more SALTIRE'S and SCOTTISH FLAG'S at these game's then i'll get behind them. for example.

CELTIC ( IRISH TRI-COLOURS = REPUBLIC OF IRELAND )

RANGERS ( UNION JACKS, ULSTER FLAGS = ENGLAND/NORTHERN IRELAND )

Am i missing the point per chance
