give me ur thoughts on who u think is the best defender.a go with campbell (raith) stanic (east fife)
King Kebab

This is Jonathan smart btw, for those of you not in the know!!!
Tam EF
Jonny Smart (East Fife).

..Awaits ridicule...
number one wasp
dougie hill and chris townsley are looking a good pairing at centre back for u this season cant really comment on any other teams till the season starts
vikingTON
Stanic still has the technique and positional sense but he lacked pace last season: not sure if the drop in level will compensate for that.
MonTheRovers!!
For us, Mark 'Sparky' Campbell. Didn't look out of place against Rangers. Neither did any of our backline, though. And one of them came from Edinburgh Uni! laugh.gif
Gordon EF
Johnny Smart and Steven Tweed will take a bit of beating as a centre back pairing. Paul Nugent has looked excellent in every game I've seen him in too. It looks like Dougie Cameron wil stay at left back for us and Stanic will play in midfield.
'Steve
City's John Ward and Davie White are both cracking centre halves at this level, as Cowdenbeath fans will know.
Dunc
We're agreed then, that we all have fantastic defences.

Especially East Fife, who's defence is so good that it's also they're midfield.

I'm glad Mark Campbell is finally getting recognition from the Rovers support, he's been our most consistent player over the last few seasons. I honestly think he's wasted the best years of his career with us, he could do much better.

So obviously I'd be biased and say Campbell! But this is the sort of thing that every fan of every team will inevitably put one of their own in for.

Yep, Big Mark could still play 1st Division level.

I honestly cannae wait to see him against us in September.

Somtimes you get a bit worried about East Fife and the genrally impressive squad they're assmebling, but then from time to time they'll remind you that Jon Smart is their best player and you realise things can't be that bad.

They say seeing is believing, so I'll believe it when I see him play.

Until then, he remains a carthorse in my eyes.

I'm not sure if he's neccesarly our best player. He's the type of player that fans love and that's why he's so popular. Steven Tweed made a big difference to his game last season I think and between the two of them very few mistakes were made over the course of the season.

Raith fans obviously don't rate him from his time there but it's very clear he's improved since then.

campbell will be better than smart.he was solid against boyd and darchville so if he can keep his tempo going he will be a top class defender next season.he will be better than smart

Yes fair comment, and I didn't mean that as a wind-up. He was at Raith at a difficult time as well as being inexperienced himself, and he's clearly doing much better now.

Willie Dyer is the best left back in the division and the lad Hill at Alloa is up there we Ward and Whitey
drs
David Lowing
Whistle Blower
Martyn Campbell pisses on his brother, both in terms of footballing ability and in terms of injuries.

I've seen him at 1st Division level and he's too slow for up there.Never loses a thing in the air but his lack of pace and the fact an oil tanker can turn quicker is exposed to easily at a higher level.
Martyn is a better player but because he is always injured he hasn't got anywhere in the game. He's not got the pace either though.

Rangers hardly play the most attacking football mate tongue.gif and anyway, smarty looked a home against rangers last year. Even tho we did ship 4 goals.
RedWeb
Glad we got that sorted. Raith, East Fife and Brechin have the best defenders. I can't wait for someone to start "Who has the best midfielders thread ?" huh.gif

Nobody will start a best midfielders thread because they know it's us. B)

Best defender is probably Mark Campbell.
loyal-blue
For us, probably Ian Dobbins!
Inthe whole division, from what I have seen of him at St. Johnstone it would be Goran Stanic for East Fife!
ARoverinLeeds
Mark Campbell, although i saw him alot last season he was quite inconsistant. But what i've seen on the clip's on youtube he was bloody brilliant, He had Darcheville in his pocket. I never tire of watching that back heel smile.gif

No offence but that big sodding lob he sent back towards his own keeper when under no pressure in the friendly against Forfar is not the sign of an improved John Smart.

Jamie Bishop and Alan Rattray are veruy good defenders , in the league id probably say Stanic as a left back will stand out alot.

The number 4 Ward had a good game. Especially first half. If he stays free of injury he will be a real bonus to us.

A Right back is still a defender these days yes?

Then Craig Wilson will be the defender of the year again.

Dobbs is a player I am a big fan of but not to many other Stranraer fans seem to be of the same opinion. Looking for a big season from him though.

Ah! but they had Kevin Smith in their team. rolleyes.gif In all seriousness, you are right and people are looking far too much into our friendlies. If we're top after the first two months then i'll look into players performances.

Enough said. Bearing that in mind, losing 4-0 was a great result. rolleyes.gif

Indeed. I was quite content at seeing my team surviving without it being more than 4.

Much the same as losing 2-0 to Spartans was a great result yet some East Fife supporters were oozing confidence after beating a Hamilton youth team.
