I'll be coming down to Alloa on Saturday for the cup game and was wondering if any Alloa fans could give me a rough idea of how close/far away the train station is from the ground and also are there any boozers near by??

cheers..

5-10 min walk from the station. Come out, turn left past Asda and head up the hill.

Probably the best bet for a pint for away fans is the Old Brewery. Come out the station, cross the dual carriageway, head into town. Head for Argos and turn left, go round the corner and you should be there.

If my memoory serves me right, this is something we have also had trouble doing in recent years, staying in division 1. ohmy.gif

And yes, last season was a successful season for us, we didn't get relegated and had defeat snatched from the jaws of victory in the play-offs. mad.gif

It is now impossble to start a topic on here about Alloa without a few st*rl*ng albino fans commenting on it. No idea why this happens, perhaps they are all competing with each other to have a record amount of posts??

Best pub near ground is Leisure Bowl, a mere 2 minute walk away, with large screen, pool tables and inflation-resistant £2 pints.

I'd disagree about the Leisure Bowl being the best pub near the ground but thats just personal choice. Couldnt agree more about binos though.

I expect not to see any comments from Alloa fans in Stirling topics then. Will probably be unlikely considering how obsessed some Alloa fans are about Stirling Albion.

Both as bad as each other. At least, some on each side are. There's one Alloa fan in particular. The Alloa programme must be full of stories about Stirling Albion's debt and non-ownership of a stadium judging by his "contributions" on here. I don't care about Alloa anymore than any other team we'll be playing this season.
Rinky Sidebottom
Getting back to the original topic, the last time I was at Recreation Park (May 2008) it was it's usual hovel self, the pitch is one of the better artificial surfaces, although these little rubber pellets get everywhere!
The stadium is dreadful, I understand it is getting redeveloped and to be honest I would have thought that meant demolished and rebuilt.

Don't think I've written anything about Stirling in regards to debt in the Alloa programme. Feel free to check though

And what exactly does the state of our stadium have to do with how near it is to the train station, or where the nearest boozer is? Feel free to have a gratuitous pop at us, that's half the fun of being football fan, but don't be disingenuous about it.

Of course our ground isn't the nicest - the main stand is a bit on the small side, the corrugated iron at the Railway end looks dreadful, the Hilton Road end isn't terraced and there's little cover for away fans. On the other hand we do have a ground that provides income for the club and will continue to be improved and will continue to benefit the club. Stirling, in contrast, have a ground that looks very neat and pretty but continues to be a financial drain on the club. Personally I'd rather be in our position.

Now, I'd never expect you to miss the subtleties of a discussion drs but I was replying to a Stirling fan who raised the condition of our ground. If anything the obsession goes in the other direction.

How that should really read is:

What is this obsession that the Clackmannanshire team in the same Pub League as us have with the facility owned by Stirling Council that we rent at a financially crippling cost each Season. wink.gif

Back on topic as has been previously mentioned Old Brewery is the best pub in Alloa for a prematch pint. Looking forward to Dundee game on Saturday and hope the Dark Blues bring a decent support down with them.

Rinky thats a strange looking Stirling Albion strip you have on your avatar is it not? How did 'Mighty Leeds United' get on in the playoffs anyway bawface? Have you been big enough yet to go into the "Rinky sidebottom you boys took one helluva beting" thread yet?

There isn't a single Albion fan I know that gives two shits about your stupid wee team, yet even at my work, there's a guy whose whole season revolves around Alloa beating us. And yes, he's a member of the '7-0' supporters club. Yeah, but you're not obsessed though.

We are your everything.

Looking forward to the game on Saturday, hopefully the Dee bring a good support and a decent team down.
Will be interesting to see if the new train station in Alloa increases the away support at all.
Looking for a good performance, although a result will be hard against one of the favourites for the 1st division title.

It's great to be back facing a new season again. smile.gif

You cant beat the banter laugh.gif

So to sum up for the Dundee fan, if you head out of the train station and walk straight across the two pedestrian crossings, through the car park to get to the town centre for the pubs. If you wish to go straight to the ground come out the train station and take a left, the ground is straight through the roundabout and up the hill, 5 mins walk max.

Of the pubs-

The Leisure Bowl has a cheap pint, is quiet and with a big screen, with cheap food. Ideal if you want the run of a place, and is where I drink before the games. Technically is a 2 minute walk as terracewasp says, if you go the back way short cut under the bridge at Orlandis, Dwayne could drop a few vallys and still make it in 2.

The Station/Prim/Locker Room/Star and Thistle are 5 pubs basically within spitting distance of one another, and ideal if you are after a wee half marathon or something similar. These pubs are all at the top side of the town centre, beginning across from the police station. All pretty cheap and possess character in their own ways.

At the bottom side of the town centre, youve got The Vennel, which I never frequent anymore, the clientele is questionable to say the least. Then you have Crams which is jakey central, outstanding for a laugh, but maybe not for the newcomer.

Then you have the Old Brewery. A Weatherspoon type pub, definitely not the cheapest, and watch out if you bring a squad who make even the slightest bit of noise, as it may not go down well in there. For a non adventurous, uncomplicated, boring pint this is your place.

Enjoy the day and the game, hopefully there will be a decent travelling support making their way down.

I think we have a misunderstanding here. I thought yer man meant he could make it from the leisure bowl to the ground in 2 mins. I take it you mean to the station.

A great assessment, well worth inclusion into any Alloa Tourist Guide.

ps: If you are from the Hilltown area of Dundee, you will get a cheap carry out from Asda (30 seconds walk from train station) which can be consumed in the nearby Greenfield park (less than 5 minutes walk from Asda) cool.gif
