Just English and Scottish league's for me. All done on bet365, well aware I could have probably got better odds if i had fished about else where. But just re-investing Poulter winnings.

I opted to not bet on the top division's due to there being no value to be had.

£5 returns £568.75 at laddies.

£2 on Dundee, Shrewsbury double, returns £84.50

£20 on Dumbarton at 4/1.

£2 acca on Birmingham, Leeds, Shrewsbury, Dundee, Ayr and Dumbarton. If that comes up it's "see ya suckers" and I'm offski.

Also a couple of bets involving Saintees instead of Dundee.

I was laughing at him saying there was no value in the bets in the top leagues then he had picked a team at 2/1 and 3/1 which is hardly great value.

You can lay 'rock bottom' on betfair.

Sure some bookies will bring out some 'special markets' nearer the season start.

Can anyone give a good reason why many bookies have Newcastle shorter odds than Portsmouth? At Ladbrokes it's 200/1 and 350/1. Newcastle have signed Guthrie from Liverpool, who's only had first team experience at Bolton and some foreign guy Guttierez. Pompey have signed Crouch, got Sahar on loan from Chelsea and haven't sold anybody. Crouch and Defoe look far better than anything Newcastle have. Owen is bound to miss a few games anyway. Tempted to include them in the season match bets that are now up on the laddies site. Thoughts?

Edited to add: just checked season match bet section, Pompey cut from 2.2 to 2.0. Got one bet on them last night, with three other teams, at that price. Obviously been a few takers. Newcastle were 1.66, now 1.72.

where did you see evens? I put £220 on Pompey at 10/11 in a match bet as I have said in another thread, Pompey were 3/5 when I looked on betfair. May also take Pompey top finish in top 6.

Still not sure about league winners, only one I know I'll back is Brechin, Dundee Utd at 9/2 without the Old firm also appeals if they can hang on to Hunt etc.

Latino, Ladbrokes put their match betting up yesterday afternoon, i'd been checking several times a day for the last week. Pompey were 2.2, Newcastle 1.61, not 1.66 as I said earlier. Now cut to Evens. Made a lot of money with their season match bets last season, over £1300 profit, but I think last year may have been a one off, looks like they have learned from their mistakes. Scottish odds out this afternoon, nothing that tempting although I've already done a Celtic, Dundee Utd, Falkirk treble. United 1.9 to finish above Hearts.

Annan are 2/1 to finish bottom of the 3rd. They finished 7th in EoS league last season (I think) and have signed no one that I know of.

Value doesn't quite describe those odds.

Annan signed 4 players earlier this week, admittedly I'd never heard of any of them.

Looking like I'll be going for the EW treble of Dundee, East Fife and Dumbarton in Scotland and a Quad on Man U, Sheffield Utd. Leeds and Darlington in England

BUT

there is still over a week to go in Scotland and 2 weeks in England so I'm waiting and biding my time.

Odds are calculated not only on how well Bookies think they'll do but also on the liabilities that the Bookies have.

There are far more Newcastle fans than Portsmouth fans and all those daft chunts in the barcode strips are likely to back their boys.

So if you have 75,000 Newcastle fans backing them compared to 45,000 Portsmouth fans then the bookies can see that they'll be paying out more if Newcastle win so they cut the odds on them,

it's the reason why England are always favourites/2nd favourites at World Cups etc cos thats who the patriotic locals are backing.

Watford stand out a mile looking at that. Certainly worth a few pounds each way I would think.
Owsley
I'm probably being very thick, but it's the to finish bottom bit I don't understand, surely with a handicap it's who finishes top when all the points are added. I don't fancy Watford at all this season, but is that what you mean blue ie to finish bottom. Can you explain?
blue4578
I've not looked at Skybet's site, but from what you said above the winner is the team which has the least points when the handicap is added on. I would imagine Skybet's to finish top handicap has identical odds and prices as all they're looking to do is make everyone equal. If you bet each-way, you need them to have one of the four lowest totals when the handicaps are added on.

Therefore you're looking for teams who are going to do worse than expected. Watford are ranked joint eighth on that list, but if they finish in the top half I'd be surprised.

I take everything back about season long bets, I'm getting on Annan to finish bottom.

I thought they would do poorly, but have since learned they re-signed all player from last season under the impression they would be non league, and signed a further 4 players from non league clubs (again, thinking they would be non league)

The only team to 'challenge' them for bottom spot will be Albion Rovers, and although they are predicted to do poorly I doubt they will be that bad.

If I was a bookie I'd have Annan at evens for bottom spot if I was being generous.

Casper Rose

I understand now. I've never seen this bet before and thought it was a mistake. Agree that Watford look excellent. On the conventional handicap, I fancy Stockport at +26 at Ladbrokes.

Ach, they've cut Watford to 12/1.

I think people are catching on to Watford and how they're likely to struggle. Totesport have removed the Ipswich v Watford season match bet market now. I had the maximum on and told several other people about it as well as posting here so no doubt they didn't take too many bets on Watford laugh.gif Totesport always seem to get the season match bets badly, badly wrong. Last season they had Portsmouth @ 5/6 against Sunderland. Betinternet still go 4/5 on Ipswich for that bet though. This is still one of the best long-term bets I've seen in a long time. Get on quick before it disappears.

lol I just looked at Skybet and Watford are now 4/1 on that market ohmy.gif I told you that they stood out a mile at 18/1! I hope some people managed to get this price. I wonder if Skybet are reading this forum dry.gif

However Skybet seem to have forgotten to adjust this market:

Group 3 - Win Outright
Crystal Palace 6/4, Ipswich 7/4, Watford 7/4 .

Ipswich should be favourites on this market. Sporting Index's points spreads are now Palace 66.5-68.5, Ipswich 68-70 and Watford 57.5-59.5. I can't get any money on at Skybet so there's no point me trying but you could for example put £10 on Palace and £15 on Ipswich. If Palace finish top out of those three, you lose nothing. If Ipswich do, you win £16.25. The only way you can lose is if Watford finish ahead of both of them, which is very unlikely. Alternatively, just back Ipswich @ 7/4 which is still a very, very good bet. I'd get on quick as this price will disappear very quickly I would think.
Fudge

Not sure if this is 100% true, but it explains why I'm so eager to oppose Watford. I first heard about their financial troubles over a month ago.
Owsley
Not just Totesport removing Watford match bet, Laddies have removed their pairing with Charlton. Fortunately included it in a couple of accas.

Your advice here is invaluable blue, particularly on bookies I never bet with. I've just opened an account with betinternet and got on Ipswich.

Would you agree Swansea v Southampton at 1.83 is also good value at laddies. Saints seem to be in as much money trouble as Watford and a 10 point deduction may not be far away.

I just wish I'd fully understood that to finish bottom bet a bit earlier and got on Watford at 18/1. Stuck £2 on Southampton e/w to give me an interest.
blue4578
I hardly ever bet with bookmakers when it comes to football, but for long-term bets there often is little choice as you can't place the same bets on the exchanges. Betinternet are a pretty poor bookmaker in general, low limits and mostly rubbish odds, but they're offering a good bet on this occasion. I think their business is aimed more at customers based in the Far East. I try to keep accounts with all bookmakers who I know are very unlikely to disappear and run off with your money and who also won't do stupid things like void winning bets for no reason.

Swansea v Southampton is an interesting one. Both teams have big question marks hanging over them, and also have potential huge upsides. Swansea are going be without two or three of their key players from last season, but at the same time have signed a few unknown Spaniards. They did the same last season and it paid off big style. I think Roberto Martinez is potentially going to be a great manager, so it wouldn't surprise me if they did what Bristol City did last season. On the other hand, Martinez is very inexperienced and they have very few players who have played regularly at this level so could struggle if they don't start well. Southampton won't be going into administration I don't think, their financial problems don't seem all that terrible. Players will be sold though, Skacel is about to go to Ipswich I think. They've appointed Jan Poortvliet as manager, who I know very little about. The reasoning behind that was that he would develop their younger players. Managers coming from abroad to the UK can work out as well as Arsene Wenger, or as badly as an Egil Olsen. Southampton do have a lot of good younger players though, so if they can get their defence organised they could challenge for a top half finish possibly.

I'd probably take a risk on Swansea at Evens, but 5/6 is only marginal value I think.
Richard_B
I might follow up my ante post prediction for division 2 after Peterhead's result last night. Granted, they were playing a lower division side (I think who were missing Baird), but division 2 has no clear cut favourite and it was originally the signings of Skinner, Ross and McVittie that tempted me to them, but I've heard good things of Gunn and they could definetly be worth a punt, each way even.

I agree. Skybet have the handicap out and have them +9, looks the best bet to me. I put a very early £5 e/w on Ayr because of their high odds and I now fancy East Fife but Peterhead won't finish worse than third IMO.

Huddersfield bet not as daft as it may sound to others. Due to £100 season ticket offer, they have sold over 16,000 season tickets, So will get plenty of backing at home (in saying that, they take away dire away support).

Risky business betting on UEFA cup winner, as I always prefer to wait and see who end's up dropping out the Champions league. If someone like Liverpool finish 3rd and end up in the UEFA cup, then you would have to fancy a side like them.
