Full Version: 20 Goals A Season Strikers - A Dying Breed?
The Pie Shop > SPL and SFL Football > 2nd Division General Chatter
farflung lichtie
Anybody else noticed that there seem to be fewer outstanding goalscorers around at this level - weell, at least the kind that accumulate 15-20 over a long season? I'm always surprised at the goalscorer charts which, even late in the season modest bags among the leaders

I think total number of goals scored hasn't changed that much so it's just that the scoring is spread around much more.

Not a great example, but can't recall any Arbroath player managing even 15 a season for a decade. There have been a couple in Div 2 who've hit 20 (just) Russell and earlier Shields maybe Barrowman. But one striker used to be the main source of goals for most clubs

Endangered species?

We had Williams and Stevenson on 17 each in an utterly shite team last season.

I'm hoping that the 2 of them and Prunty will be banging them in this season.I think our last player to score over 20 was Eddie Annand in the first division.

We were spoiled in the period 1986 - 1995 when Gordon Dalziel scored for fun, and before that we had Paul Smith & Keith Wright who would bag 30-40 between them.

I'm not sure 20 goals a season strikers were ever quite so common as you suggest. A list of Alloa's goal scorers over the past 20 or so years shows only 5 occasions where our top-scorer has managed 20 goals or more, mind you in the past 6 seasons we haven't had anyone even get close to 20 goals.

I think the last player to score over 20 for us was Dr Deuchar in 2002/03.

McManus got 17 last season I think, and i'm sure he got 17 for us around 2001?

Loads of goals came from our defence last season, which is probably better than just one guy banging them in, if he gets injured your fecked.

What ever happened to him? He was always outstanding against us. Big and strong, good in the air and on the ground, deadly in front of goal.
Dink
He went to Bristol Rovers from us and started pretty well but he got a few bad injuries which seemed to rob him of his pace and allied to the fact he was a lazy bastard he was never really the same player again. He came back up to Scotland and played for Partick, St Mirren, Gretna and Forfar before heading over to Ireland for a while then disappearing into obscurity in the juniors.

He really never made the most of his talents, especially when you consider he played in our team at the same time as we had Colin Nish on loan and I always thought Cameron was the better player of the two.

Eh....Williams got 20 and Stevenson got 18 last season.

Incredible when you think that for the first 6 games Williams wasn't considered first choice by Watt! He only secured a starting berth when he played a blinder as we beat Hamilton in the Challenge Cup. So really he scored 20 goals in less than 40 games. biggrin.gif

I don't think it'd be too much of a stretch to predict Diack scoring around that number this season.

A pint says he won't.

Speaking of which, it runs in my head I owe one of the East Fife mob a pint from last season, I'm sure I said McManus and O'Reilly wouldn't hit twenty goals between them and I see they managed twenty two. Can't remember who it was though.

Don't be holding your breath for Wardlaw doing anything like that in the season to come tongue.gif

Last I saw of him was for us in the Second three seasons ago and of the features you list I guess he was still big ( and getting bigger).

That's about as likely as Adam Coakley reaching double figures never mind 20.

Done.
Bear in mind I'm still technically owed £20 from last season's crazy betting sprees then i have every reason to be confident.
Russell's going to be starting every week with ability, Coakley - not so.
Will Coakley get a game for Queens or do you have credible strikers?
Which competitions count?

I agree with both of you, lazy b*****d but he'll score a fair amount of goals if he avoids injury.

In fairness he didn't get that much of a chance to prove just how much of a lazy cnut he was.
At least you didn't pay 30k for him. mad.gif

League, league cup, scottish cup, challenge cup.

At the moment we have Robert Dunn and Stuart McGrady up front (not including which under 19s make the step up, if any). Towards the end of last season, we played a centre mid (Tony Quinn) up front, who scored more than both of them.

The fact that he's a Speirs signing (rather than Billy Stark's), i can see him starting next season if he impresses in pre-season.
