This weekend for some reason unknown to me, when using internet explorer 7 and I click on an external link the browser just freezes and you have to close it down before using it again.

It has worked fine for ages, but this weekend it just started doing it.

Links that open onto the same window are fine and work well, but any link that requires a new wondow or tab just won't open. Sometimes they will open if you also press the ctrl button for opening a new tab, but not always.

I've tried going onto microsoft updates, but it freezes when trying to download the latest update !

Do you have anti-virus or anti spyware running?
I'd run a virus scan and run spybot first of all.

Every time i tried to open a new tab with Internet Explorer the whole lot would just pack in so i downloaded FireFox and after an initial "getting used to" period i've never looked back.
Much quicker and smother.

I do use firefox normally, but for some sites they do not display properly on firefox (my own site included !) so need to use IE sometimes. However the recent problem has really got me stumped. I did the usual virus scan, got IE updated, it worked for a while again, but still freezes at times.

I think it's time to get rid of internet explorer and just stick with firefox

Try IETab.

A really useful FF extension that allows you to flip between the native FF or IE rendering engines within a FF tab. The perfect solution when that lame banking site starts having fits due to shitty written JavaScript.

This way you can view IE pages, but in the comfort of an FF chrome.
