Yes I'm still bored.
Who made you think "oh f**k no" when you signed them but won you over?
The most obvious for me would be Andy Smith. First thought was great a has-been Dunfermline reject. Didn't score many for us but the goal which won us the title was enough for me.
Gerry Britton is another. Loved to hate him as a Pars player but he became a bit of a cult hero among the fans. Can't really remember why.

Jerome Vareille (in his first season anyway) before he was completely knackered.

Malcolm Shotton-There was a fair bit of outrage when we signed this ageing ex Oxford centre half. The man was brilliant.Gary Clark was terrified of him.Possibly the most hard man centre half we've had.

Agree with you about Andy Smith, who still had something to offer us at that time.
However,

was utter pish with us and cannot ever remember him as a cult hero with our fans at all!
Ian Mcleod was a cult hero with me, a right-footed left back who obtained a nose bleed when crossing the half-way line, so cut onto his right foot and crossed into the box before sauntering back into position.

In recent seasons it's a no brainer...Paddy Connolly. When we signed him I thought he was washed up but he went on to be utterly fantastic for us. The guy had more skill than most opposition teams combined and he beat players with his brain. Was gutted when he left to join Brechin but as he didn't do much for them it looks like we had his last hurrah

When he first came to the club I was under the impression he would be good, sure proved me wrong

I was convinced Glynn Hurst would be shite. When we signed him he immediately got injured and I dont think he made many (if any?) appearances until the season after. The guy was an absolute goal machine though.

Without a doubt .. Frank Mcgarvey - Single handed won us the 2nd div mid 1990s
Then that c**t of manager (we'll call lAlex Smith) gave him a free transfer
Sure here's plenty others most recent but thats the one that stands out for me

I'm happy to accept defeat on that one. Like I said I couldn't remember why he was a cult hero. I think people just liked being able to chant "Jerry, Jerry" at him.

David Dunn.
Couldn't believe that we had signed such a waste of space player at the time.
He turned out to be an excellent signing for us...hang on I've got that the wrong way about!!
Going way back, Sam McGivern and Hugh Burns would probably come into that category with me. Both were IMO excellent players for us...albeit in poor teams... who I didn't want anywhere near Ayr at the time.

Kieran McAnespie was utterly pish for us, and I laughed on here when Alloa signed him. Predictably, he played so well he won himself a move full time to Morton. Still, he's been pish with them and looks like he might be punted, so I feel slightly less stupid. Slightly.

I liked McAnespie. Some of his crossing was shocking, but when he was with us I don't think he'd ever played a full season of football before.
At Alloa he managed to get a good run of games and was able to show a bit more consistency. At Ayr I thought he showed quite a bit of class although he was inconsistent.

Andy Smith up there on my list as well,Think we were his last club & majority of supporters (on official site) weren't too keen inc myself
Step forward Smith & Ian harty show that kept us top of the 1st division from Nov till two games to go 200? & we hit the self distruct button with Inverness caley winning the league..

Probably Paul Martin when we signed him from Albion Rovers. After seeing him a few times play against us and then his first game in a pre-season friendly, i thought he was shite.
Ended up being a great signing and captain for a stint when we won the league too.

For inconsistent consider one game in 5 he'd play reasonably well, not good enough at any level.
Mind you, David Dunn eclipsed that by a long shot, not to mention Paul "quality crosses" Hyslop. Two "quality crosses" in one game across two seasons

Being honest I was a little concered when I saw Roddy Grant was going to Brechin. How wrong was I?
