Anybody know if he's any good?
Whistle Blower
I thought he left Dumbarton to move up in his career ?

If he was the Dumbarton keeper in 02/03, then yes he impressed me.
Monster
He was the Dumbarton keeper when they were relegated under Paul Martin a couple of seasons ago.

I don't rate him paticularly highly, but he's a lot better than bloody Creer, that's for sure!

One of those signings that you can't get excited about, but don't worry you much either.

good big keeper. is he going to be first choice or back up? i would rather have had him between the sticks last season than crawford. in general a good signing for ayr.

he's a bit of a bevvy merchant too wink.gif laugh.gif

Monster
Five seasons ('02-'07) and 169 appearances with Dumbarton, so he's got a decent amount of experience for a 26 year old.

Came to Queens last summer with a good pedigree, I think he had a record number of clean sheets for Dumbarton, or something similar.

He was restricted to just the odd appearance mainly in the CIS and Challenge Cups, both of which we went out of early doors. At no fault of Grindlay might I add. He definitely suffered because of our high quality loan goalkeeper.

I suppose after playing very well in the Third before not quite making it in the First, the Second division is a good middle-ground for him to get his career back on track.

I think a lot of Queens fans will be disappointed about this purely because it leaves us without any signed goalkeepers. Without a crystal ball it is hard to see if it is a good move for Queens or not. I'd expect it will be for Ayr.

Spent all of last year as understudy to Jamie McDonald at Palmerston. Never put a foot wrong on the few occasions he was called upon.

I'm being picky I suppose but I certainly didn't think he covered himself in glory in the last game at Dunfermline and I certainly thought the opening goal was down to him. It was an awkward situation to be thrown into though.

Decent big guy and very unlucky not to have had a shot with us. He'll probably consider his last year pretty much wasted, though in 20 years I bet he doesn't regret having a Scottish Cup medal even if he didn't play a minute to get it!

I'm sure when he signed for us he expected to get some first team football but we didn't bring MacDonald in from Hearts to sit on a bench and Hearts didn't send him to sit on one either. Once we signed Jamie 'Shay' was always going to have to wait for injury, suspension or a run of poor form to get in. None of them happened.

He has all the physical attributes to be a fine keeper. He's big and powerful and kicks well. Not the most obviously agile inevitably but with his size he's not going to be. Played in our first round exits in both the lesser cups which was unfortunate for him as I'm sure if we'd progressed in them he'd probably have continued to be played in them. A bit unlucky to lose a goal on the rebound from his initial save against East Fife. I missed the defeat at Clyde in the Challenge Cup but the goal was a direct free kick from 25 yards. Didn't play for us again until MacDonald was rested for a couple of the last games when the league campaign was irrelevant but the cup final was around the corner. Kept a clean sheet v Thistle but was completely untested that night, so toothless were they. I could have kept a clean sheet that night. Was in goals for our 4-0 last match defeat at Dunfermline but we played a virtual reserve eleven that day so it's not really fair to level that at him. As I said in the first paragraph I thought he might have done better with the first but he was blameless with the rest of them.

I'd have been happy to have him back at the club this season but I think we'd probably have looked for a first team keeper with him to back up rather than the other way around. I won't lose enormous amounts of sleep over his departure either but would certainly wish him all the best and hope it goes better than the last ex-Queens keeper to sign for Ayr!

That was the obvious comparison - there's no way he could be anywhere near as bad.

Superb signing for Ayr.
Ayr are looking a strong side this year.

Remember Dumbarton supporters saying the same when we signed Winter and Borris

Winter was gash,Borris was decent

Pleased with this signing, always thought he was a good keeper at Glumbarton, big and strong and commanded his box well.I'm sure this signing will help our central defenders,it must have been torture for our centre halfs last season knowing your goalie would win next to nothing in the air under pressure.

Did Grindley not have a howler against Partick Thistle on the last day of the season when Dumbarton were relegated? Lost the third goal scored by McConalogue!! I remember manager Paul Martin had slated the big guy before being sacked.Despite losing some bad goals that season, the manager never dropped him, which for me says he didnt have a lot of confidence in No 2 John Wight, who is currently on the transfer list at Beith Juniors. Its difficult for a back-up keeper to come in if he is not playing on a regular basis or receiving proper/organised training during the week.

Aye, he made a cock up for the winner...

Am surprised at this, I can only guess that Chisholm told him he wouldn't be No1 this season and would have to remain on the bench?

Good signing for Ayr.
