Spent all of last year as understudy to Jamie McDonald at Palmerston. Never put a foot wrong on the few occasions he was called upon.
I'm being picky I suppose but I certainly didn't think he covered himself in glory in the last game at Dunfermline and I certainly thought the opening goal was down to him. It was an awkward situation to be thrown into though.
Decent big guy and very unlucky not to have had a shot with us. He'll probably consider his last year pretty much wasted, though in 20 years I bet he doesn't regret having a Scottish Cup medal even if he didn't play a minute to get it!
I'm sure when he signed for us he expected to get some first team football but we didn't bring MacDonald in from Hearts to sit on a bench and Hearts didn't send him to sit on one either. Once we signed Jamie 'Shay' was always going to have to wait for injury, suspension or a run of poor form to get in. None of them happened.
He has all the physical attributes to be a fine keeper. He's big and powerful and kicks well. Not the most obviously agile inevitably but with his size he's not going to be. Played in our first round exits in both the lesser cups which was unfortunate for him as I'm sure if we'd progressed in them he'd probably have continued to be played in them. A bit unlucky to lose a goal on the rebound from his initial save against East Fife. I missed the defeat at Clyde in the Challenge Cup but the goal was a direct free kick from 25 yards. Didn't play for us again until MacDonald was rested for a couple of the last games when the league campaign was irrelevant but the cup final was around the corner. Kept a clean sheet v Thistle but was completely untested that night, so toothless were they. I could have kept a clean sheet that night. Was in goals for our 4-0 last match defeat at Dunfermline but we played a virtual reserve eleven that day so it's not really fair to level that at him. As I said in the first paragraph I thought he might have done better with the first but he was blameless with the rest of them.
I'd have been happy to have him back at the club this season but I think we'd probably have looked for a first team keeper with him to back up rather than the other way around. I won't lose enormous amounts of sleep over his departure either but would certainly wish him all the best and hope it goes better than the last ex-Queens keeper to sign for Ayr!
