I think it is but thought I'd check with the experts. Just noticed that the external hard drive light isn't on any more, have checked the usb connection (OK) and the power source (OK) but nothing.

Is it dead or is there something I'm missing?

If the usb is fine and the power source is fine the only other thing I can think of is the cables connection the drive inside might have come loose. A lot of external drives are nothing more than caddies for a normal HDD to sit in, and sometimes like a normal desktop pc, the cables can work loose. Have you banged or jarred it recently would be another question.

It might be something as simple as the drive mapping, where something has changed the drive to map to another letter. See the drive letter the external drive was set to, is there anything occupying that now? If it's Windows, you can right click the "My Computer" icon which will give you a menu with "manage" as an option. In the dialog that brings up there is a storage section where the Disk Management sub section will show you any drive letter mappings, and the Removable Storage sub section deals with, well, I'll let you guess.

Nah, the light on the hard drive isn't on so I don't think it's along those lines. Will check none the less.

Not that I can remember but I'll have a look. Thanks.
