An unexpected day off has allowed me to consult Malcolm Pagan's excellent publication 'Senior Non-League Football in South West Scotland', which means I can answer both of your questions.
Is this the first time Dumfries is to be represented since Queens were founded in 1919?
If you class Queen of the South as 'Maxwelltown', then Crichton are the first team to represent Dumfries since Dumfries FC (the third of many clubs to carry that of name) lost 5-1 away to Broxburn in the First Round in 1913/14. Regarding the date in your question, Queen of the South were formed in March 1919 but their first entry to the Scottish Cup was season 1920/21.
When was the last time that Dumfries had two teams playing in the Scottish Cup proper?
In 1893/94, Queen of the South Wanderers (not the present club with a similar name) and 5th Battalion Kirkcubrightshire Volunteer Rifles both played in the Scottish Cup. However, QotS Wanderers lost in the preliminary competition, and therefore not the Scottish Cup proper.
The answer is thus 1892/93: when Queen of the South Wanderers lost 5-1 away to St Bernards in the First Round; and 5th Battalion Kirkcubrightshire Volunteer Rifles beat Camelon 5-3 at home in the First Round, before losing 7-0 away to Celtic in the Second Round.
Thanks very much for that Hibee, it was an excellently detailed piece that you put together
I have been reading some of you posts during the past year or so and you are certainly well up in knowledge regarding non league football. I have always swayed more towards the English pyramid due to the fact that it is not a dead-end situation. I followed Gretna in the Unibond League before they crossed the frontier!
If ever there was a person I would like to share a pint with, then it would be you. I would love to sit and listen to your stories, theories, propositions and plans regarding the possible move to end the closed door situation that makes Scottish football simply look daft.
Thanks again for the reply and I hope we can meet up one day
