Shame on his parents they are the real bigots in all this (and no i have no love for the queen or the royal family)

I was in the cubs myself you know. But the allegience-swearing bit never bothered me nor did unfurling and saluting the butcher's apron. Especially since our 'pack' didn't actually have a pole so we had to make do with limply hanging our flag off a cupboard.
I vaguely remember there was a hoo haa when cub HQ tried to make us remove our diamond-shaped PX badges which apparently set us apart and symbolised our distinctive identity. At the time I only really went along to play football afterwards and, being 8, was at that time more interested in playing on my Sega master system than taking on institutionalised hunnery!
But hats off to this young man - he is entirely correct in everything he says. Maybe it should be looked into.

Actually I think I do remember questions being asked about all the forlock tugging to Queen and Flag and the response which came from our geriatric Akela was the biblical injunction to "render unto Caesar that which is Caesars" because, naturally, our ultimate allegiance was to a higher authority.
Looking back there is a good bit of absurdity involved in joining a group for wee boys started by a renowned peadophile, and then discussing the political implications of the various rituals with people who were named after jungle book characters

You do have a sense of humour after all Beyemistic.Glad to see it.
The allegience thing I do remember doing but it was more out of habit at the cubs than anything else and as you say it was the football etc that I remember at the cubs and tying f*cken reef knots which to be fair have come in quite handy in later life.
I have missed out your last sentence on reply for obvious reasons as it is boy scout tradition so why change whether we agree or not.
For an 8 year old boy to make this stand, god help us all.

I totally agree with the kid, however it's not having him pledge allegiance to the Queen I would have a problem with, although being a republican I wouldn't do it, it's the pledgeing allegiance to God that is the disgusting thing here.
Anyway as this has nothing to do with Celtic FC, I am going to throw this into General Nonsense and hope that the originator of the topic is derided for team he supports despite constantly posting his own brand of pro-Celtic and anti-Rangers pseudo sectarianism. I am sure the real QoS supporters will back you up though.

Not read the whole thread but completely disagree with this comment. The boy's mother comes across as an intelligent young woman and she is quite right in what she says. Only last month some minor royal with a face like a horse....geez, I'm going to have to be way more specific...whatsisname, Phillips, married a woman who had to give up her Catholic faith. This is 2008 not 1808, for fucks sake. The wee boy did the right thing. I used to love the royal family at a very early age until we were forced, aged about 10, to stand out in the rain for fucking ages to see the Queen whizz buy without so much as a buyorleave. Caught the cold for that old cow!

People spell Santa with a capital S, but it doesnt mean they believe in him.
Im not going to get into a debate over the subject but people also use the word 'God' meaning 'the laws of physics' or as in 'natures course'. It doesnt mean they believe in a 'God' in the religious omnipotent, omnipresent sense.

Disgusting stuff - the mother clearly has manipulated the boy to her way of thinking, and is saying "he's a bright boy" because he's inherited her trouble making ways. Who cares if Catholics can't be in the monarchy - and surely it's a good thing, who the f**k would want to be a Royal?
However, the Scouts are portrayed in a bad light too - with youth organisations struggling for numbers (I was a part of the BB for most of my childhood) they should be willing to come and go, instead of forcing kids to ally themselves with a ridiculous political figurehead and a non existent "superior being". Stories like these are the reason why these organisations have an "uncool" image.

Actually, despite being an atheist and a republican I do. I believe as it is, the Royal family could be taken to the EU Human Rights court for that level of religious discrimination. It's a hangover from centuries old xenophobia and should be abolished.

Agreed, the cubs give young boys the opportunity to have fun with their pals, play sports and learn useful skills. I was a cub and had a great time.
I don't believe for one minute that an 8-year-old would object to royal references. On the contrary, lads that age - catholic or not - would find the whole idea of doing something for the queen pretty damn exciting.
In fact, I'm sure that the head of the catholic church had a whale of a time as a boy swearing allegiance to
sein fuehrer.
