Good stuff. Is it the last 5 years that the co-eff runs on?
Frank Booth
Will there be 2 UEFA Cup places up for grabs through league placings for the forthcoming season(ie competitions in 09/10) in addition to the Scottish Cup?
KnightswoodBear
I would've thought that Rangers and Celtic doing better (comparitively speaking) in Europe over the last few seasons and even Aberdeen doing thir bit last season, Scotland can't be far off getting another UEFA place back.

League Cup for that one if we got it?

I'd prefer it to be through a league placing.

don't know, it would be better if it went first to the CIS winner and then default to 4th placed team if they have already qualified.

the intertoto will become 4th UEFA spot next year, so i reckon we could have 5 places soon.

The extra place going to the CIS Cup winner would definately make the competition a bit more meaningful?

As I recall we lost the option to have the CIS UEFA place because our domestic league is so small in terms of teams

They still do it in England but that's cos the EPL is 20 teams

If we get an extra place it should be league based or we will very quickly shed the precious co-efficient points if the likes of Livi and QoS get in via that route, and be back where we started

Changing the Scottish Cup rules from this season so only the winners get in was done for precisely that reason

Countries 10-12 will have two league entrants as well as the Cup-winners (or lucky loser) spot. 5 teams in Europe again smile.gif

Access list on Bert's site.... clicky

It's not even a proper noun.

Is that not to do with the reshuffle of the Intertoto Cup into the UEFA Cup rather than us actually being good? Even countries as low down as 15th are getting 5 European spots.

Next season, there are 2 CL and 3 UC up for grabs. If we continue our rise up the table, and get to 10th by the end of the season, then we could have 4 UC up for grabs during season 2009-10.

EDIT TO ADD: What I mean is, we're currently 10th, but 9th or above gets 4 UC places not 3 UC.

Yes that's entirely correct. I read on Uefa.com that they put us up into 10th place for a laugh.

Since 2003, we have yo-yo'ed between 9th and 11th, with a couple of stops at 10.

This year we had Celtic make the last 16 of the Champions League, Rangers making the UEFA Cup final and the run from Aberdeen and yet we only got just over 3 points more than we did in 03/04. For the life of me I can't remember anything of note happening that season, can anyone recall how our club sides did in European competition that season?

Actually that was the year Celtic beat Barcelona and lost to Villareal in the quarter finals. What did the others do?

The country co-efficients are calculated by taking the average of what a each countrys reprsentatives do in Europe each season.

So, this season Scotland 'won' 41 points, as we had 4 teams in Europe this worked out at 10.250. This incidentally was the same as Italy. They 'won' 82 points but since they had 8 teams in EUrope, it came to 10.250 once averaged out.

In 2003/04, Scotland 'won' 29.50 points and as we had 4 teams in Europe this averaged out at 7.375.

r*ngers got a win and a draw in the CL Groups (v Stuttgart & PAO) and similar results in qualifying against Copenhagen (4.5 pts)

Hearts got a win and a draw against Zeljeznicar Sarajevo and also a win against Bordeaux. (5 pts)

Dundee got laughed at. Actually they got two wins in qualifying for the Uefa Cup and were then beaten home and away by Perugia. (2 pts)

As well as the Uefa Cup run, Celtic also had 4 straight wins in qualifying for the CL Group stages, followed by 2 wins and a draw in their CL Group. The Uefa Cup run yielded 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 bonus point for reaching the Quarter-final. (16 pts)

Rangers and Celtic both got a bonus point for qualifying for the CL Group stage. (2 pts)

Total: 29.5/4=7.375.
