Just reading the thread about the Dundee player Scott Robertson moving across to United, reminded me of the fact that he would have played against the QoS player Scott Robertson, a good old fashioned commentators nightmare.

A couple of years ago there were two William Gibsons on the park in a QoS vs Thistle game, although better known as Willie and Billy respectively.

Are there any other current examples where two players in Scottish senior football with the same first name and surname could play against each other?

Edited to embolden "current".
Severus Snape
David Dunn of East Stirling and David Dunn of Forfar?

I don't know about playing against each other but I'm sure Peterhead had two players called Scott Paterson on their books at the same time?

Nairn County had two keepers called Michael Rae playing for them at the same time, fighting over the No 1 jersey in the first team.

Talking of keepers did Rangers not have two Andy Gorams? laugh.gif
Yoss
The two Scott Thomsons played alongside one another both for Raith and subsequently for Dunfermline. (They may well have played against one another at some point too, not sure about that.)

Clyde and Livingston both have a Dave McKay. They came directly up against each other this season, with our Dave playing left wing and theirs right back.

Both keepers in a Motherwell - Kilmarnock game a couple of seasons ago were named Graeme Smith.

Correct - in the game at Rugby Park on 8 February 2006, Combe had to go off injured and was replaced by Smith, prompting a chorus of "one Graeme Smith" from the bewildered 'Well support.

That was the game in which Abel Thermeus, making his second and final appearance for us, was sent off for headbutting an opponent after coming on as a sub. laugh.gif

As far as I can tell, there are THREE Chris Blacks playing football in the East of Scotland League this season - one at Preston, one at Kelso and one at Edinburgh Athletic. If one of the above is the same bod, please tell.

Last season our games against Gretna featured a John O'Neill playing for each team.

And no idea why this sticks in my mind, but I remember playing Brechin in the early 90s and them having two Ian Patersons.
Strathman
I think two Gordon Smiths may have played in the same Scotland under 23 team in the late seventies.

Gnash
Both Steve McCormicks (one played for QP, Stirling, Dundee and Airdrie, the other was at Hamilton) must have played against each other in the mid-late 90s.
Frank Booth
1987 Scottish cup Final...

Ian Ferguson, goal scorer and possessor of a winners medal

Iain Ferguson, "scored" an offside "goal" and possessor of a losers medal.
Loki
Marc McCulloch and Mark McCulloch.

Did John Collins and Collins John not play together at Fulham?

And Leighton James played against James Leighton in a Scotland Wales game. If not they should've.

Sorry to be pedantic but they didnt actually play together, John Collin retired from playing in 2003 and Fulham didnt sign Collins John until January 2004. Although John Collins introduced Collins John to the media as he was still attached to the club at the time the Dutchman signed.

Wikipedia is a wonderful invention.

Fairly sure you are right there.

Also around the same time, maybe a few years earlier East Fife had two guys called Paul Taylor.

The 2 managers in the Uefa Cup Final were both Dicks. Does that count?

Especially amusing the season before last was an incident when we won a penalty up at Dens when Scott Robertson barged Scott Robertson off the ball. laugh.gif I'm sure many a Sunday Mail reader the following day thought the paper had made a cock up when desribing the incident.

It also caused bloody problems at the complimentary ticket collection point last season when each other's dad got the other one's tickets for the wrong ends!

Being somewhat pedantic, Gretna's John O'Neil only has one "l" in his surname. Ours had two.

We actually had a young guy at the club called Scott Robertson as well a couple of years ago and he was an unused sub against Queens at Dens. So there was three Scott Robertson on the team sheet once.

Talking of John O'Neil reminds me of his brothers Kevin and Stevie, who are identical twins and both played for Pollok together. Apart from the de Boers, how many identical twins have played together at a club or country level?

The Pars had the Dall twins Bobby (52 appearances) and Stewart (8 apps) between 1981 and 1984.

Queens had identical twins Gary and Ross Kerr on the books a few seasons back but neither of them ever made a first team appearance. They played regularly at Southern Counties level though.

We had Duncan and Calum Monteith at Livi in the youth team a couple of seasons back. Not identical but definitely twins.

At the moment we have the Jacobs triplets, Devon, Kyle and Sheldon who are identical. There were several Under 19 games last season where all three played, together with elder brother Keaghan.

Triplets! I hope Livvy don't draw Rangers in any forthcoming games once they're old enough as I don't think poor old Archie could cope with the confusion!

There were the Wallace brothers. Rod and Ray were twins. Not sure if they were identical.

Rod of coure was known at Leeds and Rangers, their elder brother Danny known for being at at Man Utd and Ray spent most of his time in the lower leagues and played one game for Airdrie.

All 3 played together for Southampton

The McAdam brothers Tom ( Celtic ) and Colin ( Rangers ) who played against each other in the late seventies. Same surname anyway, and brothers biggrin.gif

Also Steven McManus ( Celtic )and Steven Whittaker ( Rangers ) Same christian name. OK,too far. laugh.gif

And how could I forget Dick and Ian Campbell - played together for the Pars in 74/75, and presumably for Brechin City later in the 70s?

Was there not a Marc Millar and a Marc Miller active in the Scottish Premier League at the same time a few years ago?

I think Dunfermline and Hearts but might be wrong.

A possible clash in the future could be Clydes centre half/centre mid Mark Brown against Celtic's goalkeeper Mark Brown. It's not looking likely right now though.

Port Glasgow juniors have a pair of identical twins playing for them at the moment. It took me 3 or 4 games to realise that they were two separate people...

Not the best picture, but it was the first one I could find with them together. Andy Banks is circled on the left, Scott Banks is towards the middle.

Four, I think, in season 88-89: Bobby, Trevor, Paul and Mark. Plus 2 Robertsons (Craig and Graeme).

There were two Shane Sutherlands in the Highland League 06/07, about the same age, both promising strikers, one at Brora, another at Wick who is now at ICT.

When Motherwell beat Falkirk 5-0 on the 17th Sep 2005 we had no less than 3 players called Smith in the same team; Graeme Smith, Andy Smith and Darren Smith.

In the mid-late 90's Celtic and the huns each had a Ryan McCann and a Peter MacDonald in their squads.

Celtic's McCann has just left QoS for Morecambe, while the hun version is now with Distillery in Ireland.

The hun Peter MacDonald is with St. Johnstone, while Celtic's had to retire with injuries which had the physios scratching their heads. Extra bones in his knee or something.

Brechin City's squad from last season had a remarkable array of multiple names:

- 2 Nelsons (Craig (goalkeeper) and Adam (midfielder))
- 2 Smiths (Calum (striker) and Darren (midfielder))
- 2 Callaghans (Barry and Stuart (both midfielders))
- 3 Walkers (Nicholas (midfielder), Richard (midfielder) and Scott (defender))

Nicholas Walker arrived from Stirling and Stuart Callaghan left to join Berwick in January. Scott Walker signed for Ayr this summer.

You can see Brechin's starting line-up here for their match against Queen's Park on 15 March; all three Walkers were in the starting XI.

Also, in this match, Airdrie and Brechin both started with a Darren Smith in their team.

We also had many duplicates in the 2nd half of last season

- 2 MacLennans - Ruari (midfielder) and Roddy (winger/striker) - This pair are brothers, Ruari being the older
- 2 Gibsons - Jimmy (midfielder) and Billy (right back, anyone who says midfielder is wrong tongue.gif )
- 2 McGregors - Neil and his wee brother Callum, both defenders.
- 3 McGowans - Michael (wide man) and his wee brother Martin (?), and the unrelated David (winger, anyone who says striker is wrong tongue.gif )

Ruari and Roddy are still both here and signed up until 2010. Ruari was a mainstay in the team last season, arguably a bit prematurely. Roddy made a few breif appearances but still hasn't really broken through.

Jimmy Gibson left to go to East Stirling but Billy is still with us.

Neil McGregor is still with us, but Callum McGregor was released as part of the u19's mass release.

Michael McGowan is training with us at the moment, but is not under contract, David McGowan is under contract but if Browns got any sense he won't be using him too much, possible loan candidate. Martin McGowan left in the weans clearout.
