Only a person from the Highlands could refer to Fort William as a horrible shithole of a town. The scenery that surrounds the town is pretty impressive, especially on a sunny day. The town is a bit touristy, but not that bad for the highlands.
As Highland towns go Fort William seems quite sizeable. Why can't they assemble a decent side. Do they all play shinty? Do the shinty players not play football too?
They seem to get horsed on a regular basis.
Shinty takes priority for those who are local and stay local. Likes of Donald Park and Duncan Shearer are from the Fort, but obviously had to move on to bigger things in order to advance in their respective sport. Therefore the shinty team takes priority...however as an aside, they had a pretty rotten shinty team as well until the early 90's when they went around the surrounding villages and took all the better players. Leading to their first Camanachd Cup win in 91 I think. Shinty now being a summer sport may help their cause, but with the nature of geography and being the only West Highland team it does not paint a pretty picture. Oban Saints, their closest neighbours, play in the amateur leagues with Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock teams. Highlighting the draw of the Highland League to another West Highland team...
In the Fort, like Oban, Inveraray, Ballachulish, Tighnabruich, Caol, Spean Bridge, Kingussie, Newtonmore and so on, football may be the number one sport in terms of watching and supporting, but Shinty, and rightfully so, is the number one in terms of participation at a senior level.
