This song is one of the most ludicrous songs I have ever heard.

It implies that all Celtic supporters (ie Catholics) in Glasgow are of Irish ancestry.

It is true that Catholicism was nearly wiped out of Scotland after the Reformation (around 2% of Scots in the 17th/18th centuries were Catholic) and that Catholicism grew again in Scotland in the 19th century as a result of Irish immigration. (today around 16% of Scots are Catholic)

According to official Catholic Archdioscese of Glasgow figures, since the end of the 2nd World War, around 50% of 'Catholic' marriages in Glasgow were actually 'mixed' marriages. ie one of the spouses was Protestant. So many of the younger generation of Catholics in Glasgow today have as much Scottish ancestry as Irish ancestry. Home is Scotland!

I am a Catholic and a product of a mixed marriage. My cousins on my father's side are mainly Rangers supporters. My cousins on my mother's side are mainly Celtic supporters, as are my 2 brothers. Personally, I hate the Old Firm.

Both sets of fans should stop these bigoted songs and chants and realise that we are all brothers and sisters.

Maybe when the Scottish born celtic fans remember they are indeed Scottish and not Oirish, then maybe the Rangers fans will stop singing the song in question.

As you can see from your replies, we have some decent guys like `Sev` and of course the usual morons who despise bigotry by being bigoted like `youroldda`.

BTW, regarding how you were asked on another post, how can you be a Catholic when you came from a mixed marriage.

FFS....I think it`s fair to say that sums it up for me! People actually think your born into that religion and don`t realise there is a process you go through.

Let me explain for the benefit of all those little religious bigots that haven`t been baptised or christened.....don`t worry it`s not too late...but unfortunately just now, you don`t have a religion to stick up for yet!
Oh, and for the atheists among us who are bigots....you don`t even believe in religion so what point do you have?

And while we`re at it....for the benefit of all those religious bigots out there who haven`t been to church or chapel for many years if ever at all, can any of you explain why not...... because you certainly have plenty to say about religion on a Saturday!

And for all those bigots who do practice their faith. If your a bigot then you ain`t practicing your faith because denouncing Catholicism or Presbyterianism is actually against the word of God.
If you understand your Bible, you`ll know what I mean!

I don`t understand your point No 8.

I picked Mo Johnston who was a Catholic and signed for Rangers and it showed that it didn`t matter your religion to play football....but I never ever said he was a fine example of someone who follows their faith. Read all my posts on the subject.

What I did say is I thought he did a good job for Rangers. However, I was more interested in the goals he scored rather than his attendance to mass!

Are we agreed that I never ever at any time said he was a fine example of a Catholic. I think if you check the previous posts you and I had, you to me indicated I could have picked a better example than Maurice Johnston. Fair?

There are plenty of us from 'mixed' marriages, the norm was for the offspring to go with the father's side, or make their own choice.

I have two sisters who decided to go oppsite ways as far as faith goes but are closer than most, their children have opted for their own ways also, and not with the faiths of their parents. I do not follow any faith, but I am seriously offended by the bigotry of both sides and their diatribes against my family, cos like it or not you are gonna insult one of my sisters and that I don't take lightly, insult my sister you insult me, there are a few sore faces around Paisley who have found this out the hard way.

It seems the content of a t-shirt is deemed newsworthy where as this isn’t. I can only begin to imagine the outrage were any other minority group being sung about and told to go home.

Frankly, I think it’s time for Celtic to refuse to give huns tickets for Celtic Park. If the shameful Jock Stein denigration isn’t bad enough, we now have to sit and endure this. Enoughs enough.

It is implied by the song sung by the Rangers fans, that all Celtic supporters are Irish Catholics. Of course, most Celtic supporters are Catholics, well at least lapsed Catholics. Or do you think otherwise? The point I was trying to make is that most Catholic Celtic supporters also have Scottish ancestry because of the large numbers of mixed marriages which have taken place in Glasgow.

I see someome was mentioning Maurice Johnston.

Like so many other Glaswegians, Mo was also the product of a mixed marriage. His father was a Protestant.

The Scottish and 'Irish' communities in Glasgow have been intermarrying for generations now, though you wouldn't think it if you listened to the songs sung by Rangers AND Celtic fans.

ahaaaar me hearties.....to my chagrain I also conducted a mass crucifixtion of worms around the same age...it seemed harmless......in the plus column of my psychologicasl wellbeing I always found it difficult to shoot mammals with my air rifle and felt particularly bad after spraying a chaffinch's brains all over the garden.

I am aware of the correlation between animal torture and predeliction to hurt humans but i'm a soft touch really.

I see your still using the term `huns` to describe Rangers fans. More sectarian bigotry..eh Glasnost! wink.gif Pot and kettle spring to mind! Scotland`s shame indeed!

Oh...and before you all jump on the band wagon and say that`s what I call myself on this forum.....Your right...I do...and it`s there to remind you that it`s wrong to use the term. Get the message!

Frankly, I think it’s time for Celtic to refuse to give huns tickets for Celtic Park. If the shameful Jock Stein denigration isn’t bad enough, we now have to sit and endure this. Enoughs enough.

While I agree with the sentiments, unilateral action is inflammatory, Lawell should agree with Murray that these games are home crowd only.

Great bonus to our seasson ticket holders that have to be moved for these games, I certainly do not want to sit in a football stadium and listen/see what I did on Sunday.

It isn't wrong to use the term and nor does me using it equate to me being a sectarian bigot.

In a change of tact, I've decided to respond to this thread in the style of 'the hun'.

Thank you all ever so much for this opportunity to make some contributions to what I feel is a superb thread concerning a very worthwhile and important subject. I agree that the song is ludicrous and that those teddy bears who sing it sadly let down the vast majority of us, within whose mouths butter would struggle to melt.

Opening gambit which tries too hard to appear reasonable and conciliatory. Attempts to buy some credibility/plausibility for the inevitable avalanche of utter nonsense to follow.

But surely in fairness we should also look at the other side of the problem before we can move forward together in a spirit of brotherly peaceful friendship. I wonder what the message of Celtic fans would be to Scottish women who have been victims of atrocities in Ireland down the years? Won't somebody please think of the children: dismembered and devoured by the IRA at the behest of the very same Celtic supporters who seek relief in our poor wards?

I myself come from a long line of staunch Christians. At the age of four I gained my first experience of Catholics when nasty ruffian bigger boys from an apartheid school made fun of me and called me names. I felt shaken to my very core and very sad. From that day forth I vowed by hook or by crook to combat the forces of pan-papal fenianism with the only modest tools at my disposal.

Mr Beyemystic..dear oh dear. If ever a man was living in fear of the death of sectariansim and bigotry it`s you.

What would you write about then I wonder. Maybe you could give us all another quote from Freud!

There is nothing worse than a coward that cries foul against his apparent oppressors when all along he wishes to be oppressed so he can carry on crying, no matter who else is suffering at the hands of that same apparent oppression.

Hence when your called to stand up and be counted against all bigotry, in your usual cowardly fashion you duck under the covers leaving little anecdotes in your trail.

There are many people on this site with different views, bigoted or not.
However, in an unbelievably warped way, you wish to advise us all that you and your apparent kind, whatever that me be, are innocent of all charges even though there is guilt lying clearly at your door as well.
However instead of addressing the problems and moving on for the good of both sides, you carry your stupid chip on your shoulder muttering under your breath, dirty orange b*****ds to all and sundry, whether bigoted or not!

Even to fellow Celtic supporters, your obvious dismay should be loud and clear.

No one escapes the wrath of Beyemystic on the green and white side either.

Any Celtic fan daring to side along with the evil non bigoted Rangers fans in pursuit of a more civilised culture is a traitor to the Beyemystic cause!

For how would Beyemystic survive with all this well being from Old Firm fans to each other.

The answer is he wouldn`t and you Mr or Ms Celtic fan, whoever you may be, would be classed as a traitor in his eyes for having the audacity to be friends or talk sensibly with the so called dark side.

Never mind, thankfully, there are many smarter people on this site, far more intelligent than you or I Mr Beyemystic, who can think themselves and will judge for themselves what you and I are all about.

At the last census most of the people in Scotland who said they were Irish were born in Ireland. Because we (Celtic fans) want to celebrate our heritage at a fooball match, and fly our historical colours does not make us any less Scottish.

That's an interesting statistic...

If you must bore people with your bible bashing, please don't brush aside the religion of millions of people with your ignorance. dry.gif

It's save a lot of money in police costs too, would mean you could both fill your grounds (rather than leaving empty seats for segretation buffer zones etc. Nice thinking...

Heard lots of meanings given for the word, none of them religious in nature. In fact Rangers fans used to sing go home ya huns to us. I would go for the Scottish journalist who likened them to "rampaging huns" after the usual battle on English soil, Sunderland I think it was.
