I haven't read this whole thread but it's a shocking song. Terrible that people sing things like that at football matches.

Thats a great feckin line !! How do you do it?
Are these instinctive retorts or have you had training of some sort ?
Honestly you could make a fortune out of writing best man speeches for folk.
That was magic well done.

Is that it?
Best you can do?
Dear o dear Robert.
Get another pogues cd on, your Irish alter ego has got to be less boring than your Scottish reality.

My children are likely to be brought up in England and, in the future, if they:

1.Supported a team playing in an English league which was set up primarily for Scottish Presbyterians;
2.Constantly harked back to their Scottish roots;
3.Regularly slagged of England and English history and institutions;
4.Sang songs in support of Scottish independence.

I think it would be perfectly reasonable for supporters of other English teams to tell them to f**k off back to Scotland.

However, it seems that the average Dhim has a preternatural yearning to being offended.

Even more ridiculous is the idea that this is racist. The Celtic Trust – which makes even the RST seem a moderate and even-handed organisation – must surely take some sort of prize for hyperbole when they called it a Holocaust Chant:

CELTIC TRUST TO RAISE HOLOCAUST CHANTS WITH SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD

The Celtic Trust intends to report the racist chants of the Rangers fans in which they advised us all to 'go home' now the 'famine' is over to the organisation Show Racism the Red Card. The continued treatment of 'An Gorta Mór' (the Great Hunger) as a matter for jokes and offensive songs is increasingly being found among Rangers fans and elsewhere. It should not be tolerated and should be condemned as racist and unacceptable.

BTW the OP said that this chant, “implied......that all Celtic supporters are Irish Catholics.” It doesn't. It's a silly little chant which makes no mention of religion.

It gets easier to see how Rangers as a football club got away with the worse sectarianism and discrimination in the history of British sport

I often wonder where they would have been
If we hadn't have taken them in
Fed them and washed them
Thousands in Glasgow alone
From Ireland they came
Brought us nothing but trouble and shame
Well the famine is over
Why don't they go home?

Now Athenry Mike was a thief
And Large John he was fully briefed
And that wee traitor from Castlemilk
Turned his back on his own
They've all their Papists in Rome
They have U2 and Bono
Well the famine is over
Why don't they go home?

Now they raped and fondled their kids
That's what those perverts from the darkside did
And they swept it under the carpet
and Large John he hid
Their evils seeds have been sown
Cause they're not of our own
Well the famine is over
Why don't you go home?

Now Timmy don't take it from me
Cause if you know your history
You've persecuted thousands of people
In Ireland alone
You turned on the lights
Fuelled U boats by night
That's how you repay us
It's time to go home

There's nothing sectarian or discriminatory to suggest that a group of people who A. express antipathy towards the part of the British Isles where they live and B. allegiance to the part of the British Isles where they have their roots that they should then move back.

There's nothing to suggest that the bulk of the crowd do either A or B, so while there's nothing sectarian about it in any case, you could call it discriminatory.

You're either being naive or disingenuous. There are enough Tarrier fans singing/chanting anti-British and pro-Irish words to regard it as a characteristic.

There's nothing wrong with celebrating Irish Catholic roots but when that celebration involves casting your host country as the enemy or the foe then you should expect people to treat it with disdain.

However, the average tarrier has got to regard opposition to their hatred as racism - because the alternative would be to recognise the ludicrousness of regularly singing songs against the country of their birth.

You're being disingenuous by classing anti-British and pro-Irish along with each other and then (correctly) separating them in the next paragraph.

There's nothing inherently ludicrous about singing against your country of birth (although when that self-same country affords you the freedom to do so and to oppose its policies it perhaps becomes a little hollow, yes.)

I agree that singing songs opposing Britain isn't ludicrous but 1. singing anti-British songs 2. singing songs in favour of another country and 3. bleating 'racism, racism' when people take issue with you is bordering on madness......as witnessed below:

Apparently that's different because black persons and Pakistanis "can't help it" due to visible biological stuff.

The implication being that those of Irish Catholic descent could/should conform to a particular idea of 'Scottishness' (very often entailing a high degree of hunnery). Our distinctiveness is denied when it suits, but also ridiculed and abused on the other hand - which the McGeady case demonstrates in microcosm.

Think we're supposed to be flattered wacko.gif

What is it with the Huns? They claimed they were on an equal footing with Celtic on the sectarianism front, as in both clubs were working to clear their image, and then along comes the Big Jock Knew stuff, which disgusted everybody from George Galloway to David Murray, and they all tell us that it was a group of knuckledraggers and that they would work to eradicate it from their support.

And now this song. This is just about the most xenophobic, bigoted and ultimately moronic song I've heard in a while at a football ground. The very suggestion that Celtic fans have come to "their country" is astonishing, but the very explicit references to "papists" and "fuelled the U Boats by night" are just criminally racist.

I'm no Irishman, I'm a Scot, born and bred. I feel no particular affinity with Ireland, and I have never been there or sought actively to go. But all the same, to allow this kind of trash to be sung about people of another country, this bile that smacks of an age of intolerance I thought we'd long left behind is an absolute disgrace.

I used to believe Celtic and Rangers fans were just as bad as each other. The BJK stuff and now this are starting to change that opinion.

Indeed. Or even wear Pakistan cricket tops around Glasgow.

Why are the sons or grandsons of Irish immigrants who retain an affinity for Ireland any different from those immigrants of the West Indies, or India, or Pakistan who retain an affinity for their origin country?

Should they all be sent home, or is it just the Irish? I am confused.

Firstly Rangers and Celtic are nowhere near an equal footing...Rangers realised the 'Problem' years ago and have made massive strides to eradicate the overtly sectarian singing at Ibrox. The BJK Stuff brought it to the attention of the masses that although a great football man he failed in other aspects and should never be considered for a knighthood...i do concede their job is done and it went well over the top and should have stopped along time before now.

As for re-fueling the U-Boats and breaking the blackout to guide the Nazi Bombers onto East Belfast and in particular H&W...Well i am afraid that is historical fact...maybe not nice to hear what your forefathers were up to during the war but factual all the same.

As Bloobell says if your club want to play Rebel songs over the PA system to stir up your crowd then opposition supporters are perfectly correct to mock them and their plastic paddiness.

Celtic set a new low when they allowed Terrorist fundraisers to use Celtic Park in a video FREE OF CHARGE!! They play Rebel songs over the PA system!! They refuse to admit they have any problem and continue to fly a Foreign Flag over their stadium!! They continue to cash in on Plastic Irishness...but only Irish Nationalists are welcome!! Do they still have the Portrait of John F Kennedy in their boardroom?

WHY DON'T YOU GO HOME!!

Mr 8,Sir David Murray has spend many years making money from sectarianism and his sectarian support,as well as owning a club that discriminated against people becuase of their religion but he still got his nighthood. Why?
Yes they have made a difference, but only because Uefa threatened them with sanctions if they did not clean up their mess.
rangers fans doing Nazi salutes in Israel was one of the lowest points in your fans history.I know of this fictional Red hand salute that no-one outside of Ibrox has heard about ,but a little bit of thought ges a long way when you are in another country. This is more embarrising than some person having a small link to another country and being proud of it
Celtic fans are rightly or wrongly proud of their teams irish history,as well as many of them being proud of their own irish roots.I don't see a problem with this.Maybe i'm just a bit more laid back than your average rangers fan
As for a foreign flag,i'm sure that when the Fleetings owned us we flew the Stars and Stripes at Rugby Park in honour of Bobby Fleetings wife and mother in law.Does this flag offend you in any way?? if not ,then why does the irish tri-colour offend you?

As for your final part about going home,i was not born in this country so should i go as well then? Will you give me the money to return to my homeland ? If so the contact me and i'll give you my details so that you can send the money.
These people have as much right to live here as anyone else.We pride ourselves in being a tollerant nation ,but with songs like these i really begin to wonder

Yes they have made a difference, but only because Uefa threatened them with sanctions if they
As for your final part about going home,i was not born in this country so should i go as well then? Will you give me the money to return to my homeland ? If so the contact me and i'll give you my details so that you can send the money.
These people have as much right to live here as anyone else.We pride ourselves in being a tollerant nation ,but with songs like these i really begin to wonder

Murray has been actively working against the sectarian support since 1988! There is a common misconception that all the work started after the Uefa investigation!! Absolute nonsense..it has been a slow , painfully slow at times, process.

As for the rest i am not that bothered but just thought i would have a pop back at the Celtic supporter who was portraying his own club as better than Rangers...Anyway if they all went back who would do my washing wink.gif

And by the way i will give you money for spelling lessons before i give you the money to go home. FFS Findis that is worse than mine!! wink.gif

They have a portrait of JFK! Dear God, what low will these yobs not stoop to!!!!

Why don't you go to America, why don't you go to Ammmerica, the Cold War is over, why don't you all go to America. And when we get there I say we kick out the Jocks as soon as they start their Tartan day nonsense.

What was the point again? I forget. Basically singing the Fields of Athenry is an act of gross treason, and anyone who does so should be repatriated. Same goes for any Tallies who ever wear their national football strip, have an Italian flag located anywhere in their house or place of business, or who has ever supported an Italian sportsman during their existence. Imagine having the gall to take an interest in your heritage mad.gif

The hun definition of historical fact is a hazy one, btw. Did Followfollow not quote the switching on of floodlights at Parkhead during the blackout as historical fact, even though floodlights had never been used at any football stadia at that point.
