Full Version: How Many Clubs Have Represented Scotland?

I was just thinking in light of the fact we'll play in Europe for the first time ever next season, what does that make us in terms of different clubs to have represented Scotland in Europe?

I know most of the SPL clubs will have at one time or another. Inverness haven't obviously. I can't recall Falkirk doing so either. Have they? I reckon though that Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, Dundee United, Hearts, Hibs, Motherwell, Kilmarnock, St Mirren and even Gretna all have.

In the first division, I can personally remember St Johnstone, Dundee, Livingston and Dunfermline all playing in Europe. I know Morton have too, though it was before my time. Partick played the Intertoto Cup which we'll count for arguments sake. I know Clyde once qualifed for the Inter-Cities Cup but were forbidden to take part. Don't think they've actually played have they? Far as I knwo Accies and Stirling haven't.

In lower leagues Raith Rovers obviously have and so did Airdrieonians. Anyone else? Is that it?

I make that 18 clubs so we'll be the 19th. Is that right? unsure.gif

Scottish Clubs in Europe

Here's a list here. It has Gretna mentioned in the list of clubs underneath, but it mustn't take into account qualifying rounds in the overall table. Or something. They might have just forgot to add them to the table or haven't done so yet.

Cheers for the link.

Didn't appreciate Thistle had actually played in Europe even without the Intertoto. Otherwise I was right though? We'll be the 19th.

They don't include the Intertoto in the statistics so Thistle have been in the UEFA Cup twice. Didn't realise that.

On a pro-rata basis, Dunfermline have the best record in Europe, closely followed by Dundee ohmy.gif

As regards the InterToto, Partick have entered once (mid 1990s, group-stage, 4 matches v Metz, Keflavik, Zagreb and Zurich?); Dundee entered in the early 2000s (lost to Sartid); Hibs entered 4 years ago (lost to Vetra Vilnius) and 2 years ago (beat Dinaburg, lost to Odense).

You do know they beat Sellick 4-1 to win the League Cup in 71-72? (and therefore qualified for the UEFA cup)

Your first three are correct but the 4th team was Linzer ASK of Austria. wink.gif
