Full Version: The Difference Between Celtic In 2003 And Rangers Now
The Pie Shop > SPL and SFL Football > Rangers v Celtic, Celtic v Rangers
The Hun
For anyone who wonders why the SFA had to look at Rangers fixture pile up, here`s some facts :

2002/2003
Celtic played overall

League Games 38

League Cup Games 4

Scottish Cup Games 3

European matches 15

Total 60

*In 2003 with Celtic receiving an early knockout of the Scottish Cup by Inverness Caley at ¼ final stage, they still had to play from April 23rd 2003, 5 League Games plus 1 away game to Boavista which led to 1 UEFA Cup Final against Porto.

2007/2008 Rangers will have played (excluding UEFA Cup Final)

League Games 38

League Cup Games 4

Scottish Cup Games 7

European matches 18

Total 67 + 1 possible UEFA Cup Final

*Before this season ends as of today, 23rd April 2008, Rangers still have 7 League games to play. They also have 2 UEFA Cup matches and a possible final plus 1 Scottish Cup Final – Total 9 games still to play plus 1 possible UEFA Cup Final.

It should be noted that Celtic due to an early exit in the Scottish Cup during 2003 had only League and UEFA Cup games to play. Celtic played no replays in Cup games during that season either while no games were noted as postponed for Celtic although this of course could be wrong!

Obviously Rangers have been hindered by having postponed games plus 2 replays in the Scottish Cup which explains the back log.

I don't quite understand what Celtic have to do with it and why you have to bring our 2002/03 campaign into it, or for that matter, why you couldn't just have added this to the other threads on the fixture situation.

I think his post is pointing out that Celtic being refused an extension in 2003 and Rangers being granted an extension this year are not under comparable circumstances - kind of comparing apples with pears in my opinion.

I can't ever recall us asking for an extension or it ever being an issue.

Come to think of it, a big deal was made of the huns saying they never asked for an extension. Now they have one they are throwing the toys out of the pram because the one they've got, that one they never asked for, is not long enough. Comedy gold.

Gallacticos
In 2003, Scotland didn't have a crucial Euro Qualifier, Rangers certainly didn't have a game that had they won they'd have been in the last 16 of the Champions League, Phil O'Donnell didn't die and Motherwell didn't play football on a pitch comparable to an Arabian sand dune. Plus, Rangers knew how to put down tarpaulin to keep their pitch dry.

Blame global warming, it's what I do.

The SFA is the overall governing body and the SPL seek approval for matters of re structure and guidelines etc.

Further to this, the SPL board make decisions regarding the running of the SPL in accordance with the overall governing body ( the SFA plus UEFA and FIFA guidelines) and the members of the SPL, who are of course, the 12 clubs within the league.

Just thought I would clear that up for you. wink.gif
Millfield Marksman
The SPL also have a rule that allows them to change the rules as and when it suits them.

A nice little bone that both sides (of any dispute) can gnaw over
The Hun
The SPL is controlled by 12 clubs and decisions are made with their opinion in mind.

Maybe some of the other SPL club`s representatives can confirm the extension decision as they were involved in it.

It wasn`t made by some guy sitting at a desk with a Rangers scarf wrapped round his neck and a big rosette on his lapel saying `Blue Nose Forever`!

According to Peter Lawell, the extension was agreed without consultation with the clubs or the SPL board. It is this decisions making process that has caused much concern to him and rightly so. It would appear that the SFA Executive made this decision on their own without any consultation from The Company or The Board. The latter contains 5 members of which Eddie Thomson is one (along with Eric Riley of Celtic), who like Lawell, has equally been forthright in his disagreement over the extension.

Shockarooney. Liewell and Riley of sellikfootballclub disagree with the granting of an extension to Rangers. Well, who would have known ? ohmy.gif

No one is interested in that comparing., What Celtic fans are wondering is why, if the league is extended , and the title goes to the last game of the season(and there is a good chance of this ,(all Rangers need to do is get one poorer result then Celtic before the last game ) Is that Celtic will now have to wait ELEVEN DAYS!! to play their last game, and also due to International commitments and the European championships Celtic could be without Boruc,Hinkle,Samaras,VoH,Mcgeady ,Mcdonald,Killin, Nakamura,O'dea!! ..Now tell me which team are being punished again,?

Like Celtic said the Integrity of the league has been compromised. dry.gif

Maybe Rangers shouldn't have agreed to it? A point everyone conveniently ignores, and don't tell me Rangers had no choice ,If like most Rangers fans believe Celtic were trying to pull a fast one re: O'Donnell , Then Rangers could have easily refused to postpone it saying something like ... With all due respect to Phil , and Celtic We believe ....blah blah blah and left the decision to the Spl , but Rangers INSTANTLY AGREED to the request without question rolleyes.gif

No thats false. We played motherwell at fir park as that game had to be moved because of the cis cup final in which you beat us because john hartson was 3 yards onside but the linesman thought "f**k it, flag up".

So the first available date for us to play that game was after the split. so admit you were wrong.

I dare say the head of the Stasi didn't sit at his desk bedecked in Dynamo Berlin regalia: but they used to see to it they won the league every year all the same.

And yes, the comparison is apt because ask in Germany now and there is only shame felt for the 'achievements' of Dynamo Berlin. Thesedays languishing in the regional leagues the club gaudily emblazoned numberous stars on their shirts in a hollow attempt to represent their numberous tainted trophy wins (sound familiar?) while German football and society has moved on: viewing them as a faintly pathetic throwback, wallowing in their sordid murky past.

When oh when will we all be able to move on too?

Smith's appointment was certainly an explicit, shameless, naked, direct declaration of hunnery by Scotland's football authorities. But the actual hun in the top job doesn't matter: I'm sure the apparatus will function the same way it always has regardless.

It's funny you should mention that because I see you as the character of the hun Watson portrays, you know the one with the chib mark on his chin and a mullet haircut with the 1982 season Rangers top never off his back and a picture of Mo Johnston on his dart board with empty cans of skol all over the floor.

My point is there are more serious things happen in football we should all be addressing rather than a 4 day extension of a league season da`. And that includes the shameful antics a few of my own club`s supporters get up to!

Last night at Ibrox I witnessed at the end of the game, Fiorentina and Rangers supporters clapping each other in friendly respect. As there visitors to our country, I thought it was a decent gesture. Then 2 fuckin` idiots run up to the balcony at the Broomloan Road end of the Govan Stand and started shouting abuse and fingering the Italian fans. In the old days I would have thrown them over the fuckin` balcony instead of just giving them a mouthful for letting down the club! mad.gif
