Ya Bezzer!
I'd much appreciate any information anyone has on amateur club Newarthill Hearts.

I know they won the Scottish Amateur Cup in 1979/80 but that's about it.

Formation date? When did they close down? Where did they play? Was it Mosshall Park? Any league players come through? Team colours? Etc, etc.

Basically anything you can think of. I was brought up in Newarthill but I'm pretty sure they no longer existed by the time I was out and about playing football in the mid 80's.

I can't really help you on this one, but the name Newarthill Hearts dates back to 1890 when a club of that name played Junior in Lanarkshire. That entity switched the Hearts to Thistle before folding in 1930, but a new Newarthill Hearts emerged in 1935 and ran through to 1960, initially as Juveniles but mostly as Juniors. I assume an Amateur side would have been formed to keep the name alive? Not got a clue! The above info was from Brian McColl's site.

Some years back I got a loan of old 1950-51 and 1951-52 handbooks, possibly Evening Citizen. According to them, Newarthill Hearts were in the Lanarkshire Junior League, and had 1936 as a date of formation. They played at Moss Park (capacity 8000), and their colours were maroon.
Ya Bezzer!
Should have guessed their colours were maroon!

Thanks guys, if anyone else has anything please let me know.

Hi, i was involved in amateur football in lanarkshire in late 1970's/early 80's. Newarthill Hearts then were in div 1 of 5 and were easily one of the best sides in the league and won quite a few trophies - you should be able to get info from the Lanarkshire amateur league Secretary as the trophy winners were all minuted - they also used to list all their trophy winners in their annual handbook but I don't know if they still do.

I was at the Newarthill Scottish cup final - I'm pretty sure it was against Ballingry Rovers who turned Junior a couple of seasons ago - I think the score was 3-0. it was played at hampden long before it was rebuilt- only the old main stand was open - Newarthill had the bigger support - I think the attendance was c1200 or so.

I'm pretty sure a few Newarthill players were capped for the SAFA.

I have also been searching for old Lanarkshire Junior league tables and have a few with Newarthill listed - the last one I have which shows Newarthill is 1959/60. that is the last year shown for them in John Aitkens West of Scotland Juniors Book. the same book lists them as having won 7 or 8 Lanarkshire trophies including the lanarkshire Cup 3 times. They also played in the lanark and Lothian league during world War 2 I have copies of those league tables too thanks to Graeme McGinty and his book on East of Scotland Juniors.

does anyone reading this have Central League div c tables for the 1970's or its back to Hamilton Library for me.

DO you recall Rab Sneddon from his days with Bellshill YMCA? I think he spent half his career in the Lanarkshire Ams.

don't specifically recall Rab from my amateur days. My side was in the lower divisions and bellshill were higher up. we did beat Newarthill in a cup tie once which was about the same as east stirling beating one of the old firm. that game was played at Gowkthrapple, Wishaw for some reason or other.

met rab since I became involved in juniors but only so far as a quick handshake is concerned when he was with bellshill - i'm afraid once again I am involved with a lower league club and paths don't really cross.
