Everytime I clink on a link I'm receiving a message stating 'internet explorer has encountered trouble with an ad-on and needs to close'. I think it might have something to do with Google toolbar. Can anyone advise me what's wrong and how I go about remedying it?

Thanks.
Ric
I think you've probably answered the question yourself.

Without seeing your system, it's a question of elimination. Uninstall all the toolbars and addons that you have for IE, then reboot and start adding them back in one by one checking URLs as you go. That will identify the erroneous one or perhaps even fix it by reinstalling the bugger causing you the problem.

Add-ons and (the new) Activities have been changed a fair bit in IE8 so I can't even compare my version to the one you are running.

You should d/l the beta then watch how many things break. This isn't really the thread for IE gripes but if there was one it could run into 100's of posts.

My Internet Explorer seems goosed. It won't open a single website, claiming it's not connected or whatever but I've tested the connection and it seems fine - I can access I-tunes shop and my e-mail. Am I missing something, bearing in mind I know next to hee haw about computers?

Without seeing it, that's a really difficult one to answer.

There is an option to "work offline" in IE, which you can see from IE's [File] menu. Do you have a tick next to that?

munro7
Dunno. I'll have a look when I get home and see. It'll undoubtedly be something stupid that I've done!

If it's not that, it might be worth seeing what your proxy settings are. Which IE are you using? If it's 6, click Tools, and click Internet Options at the bottom. Select the Connections tab and click LAN Settings, and make sure the only box that's ticked is Automatically detect settings.

Unless you actually do have a proxy in place of course...

Indeed, I must get round to installing Firefox at work! I take it you're using the beta of 8 at the moment then?

God no!

I specifically instruct my firewall not to allow any IE traffic. As far as it's concerned it's stuck in a wilderness of non-connection.

Running FF3 B5 though, an RC is due any day.

I also run Op 9.5 beta.

In fact I don't think I have an official point release of any browser!

Sadly wasn't the work offline thing. That would clearly have been too simple.

Think it's IE7 but checked and the only box ticked is the Automatic one you've suggested.

I didn't have much time to fart about with it yesterday. I'll have a look over the weekend and see if I can make out what the wee error message says down the bottom when it's trying to load a page in case it means something to someone with far more clue than me.

Cheers for the attempted assistance anyway guys.

The next step is to ask if you have any other browsers on your machine, and if so, do they work. If not, would you be willing to d/l a copy of, say, Firefox just to test?

Thing is, if your iTunes and the like are working then it's unlikely to be a proxy setting problem, as Jay suggests. Most applications that use the Internet use the same connection details (accessed by going to [start]>[settings]>[control panel]>[internet options]) so as I say if iTunes can connect then it's most likely going to be something within IE specifically rather than the system set up.

Try FF, for a start, just to make sure you can access information via port 80 (which the Internet port web browsers use).

Not really. I suppose it is if you are an avid Opera user or a developer. They've certainly put a bit more beef into the CSS and JS/DOM (the latter was sorely lacking) from a developers point. From a user's perspective, thing just seem to be tidied up a little and some of the Opera quirks are gone.

These are the release notes...

And you can of course download it from here...

I might just do that. I like the idea of shared bookmarks (although I know there are FF add ons and such that will do the same)

Im at work, do you know if theres a linux version of Op9.5?

Cool. I thought there would be, but the normal download page defaults to the version for the OS you're running - very clever these computer thingys.

If I can get flash working with 9.5b I'll be very happy.

Cheers. I'll give that a go over the weekend and see what happens.
