Full Version: Glaswegian Clubs In The League
The Pie Shop > SPL and SFL Football > Infowire
1896
Which clubs from Glasgow played in the League in the history of Scottish football? I only can think of six (Celtic, Rangers, Partick, Queen's Park, Clyde and Third Lanark), but I really don't know if in the past some more clubs from that city played professional football.

Cowlairs from the Springburn area of the city were founder members of the Scottish League. They were formed in 1876 and went out of business in 1896.

Wiki entry.

Also Thistle (not Partick Thistle) from the south-east - near Dalmarnock I think - Northern from Springburn, and Linthouse from Govan. I don't think any of them lasted into the 20th century.

Thanks a lot. Thought maybe clubs like Pollok or Benburb played in the League, but they never did. Clyde plays in Cumbernauld nowadays, is that Glasgow or not?

Is your former ground, Shawfield, still in the same shape as it was when you left it?

Dundee
Dundee United/Harp ... was there not a Hibs incarnation at one point?

Dundee, Dundee United / Dundee Hibernians, Dundee Wanderers. D.Hibs were going to be called Dundonians then Dundee City in the close season of 22-23?, but Dundee objected to the latter, so they never played under these names. There are a load of variations and mergers in pre-League days - Johnstone Wanderers and Strathmore for DW, Our Boys and East End for Dundee.

I don't think Dundee Harp were officially a predecessor of Dundee Hibs.

Err...no

Pretty sure Ayr has had at least 3 teams playing in the SFL, possibly 4. Ayr FC and Ayr Parkhouse amalgamated to form Ayr United in 1910. Cant be sure if there was another team around the turn of the 20th century.

Just the three. However Dumbarton had two during the 1920s when Harp played in the Third Division. Arbroath almost had two when Arbroath Athletic applied for, but were refused entry in 1923.
