Full Version: Winning The Scottish Cup

For Fife junior clubs, lifting the Scottish Cup would be the holy grail. Only five teams from the Kingdom have achieved this feat in 125 years and success in this competition secures legendary status.

But what about the bigger guns? Is the national trophy the one to aim for, or do the new super-leagues take precedence?

HTG
It's a really difficult choice ... so Lithgae won them both to avoid making a decision! biggrin.gif

Auchinleck did the same the year before.

The league has some real merit given that the standard is generally decent in every game. But the Scottish Junior Cup is the one unifying competition in the junior ranks and gives supporters a fantastic day out. And it's a long road through. We've had to beat decent teams to get this far - neither Largs nor Bo'ness give much away in these games on their own patch and we've come from 2 down to beat Meadow. Now we've got another cracker against Cumnock ... can't see it getting easier if we progress.

You tend not to see an open top bus coming through the streets for winning the league. So for the joy of the occasion and the fact that it's a hell of a difficult trophy to win, I'd say the Scottish edges it.

My view might change if the super leagues are ever unified.

As a Linlithgow Rose fan the Scottish Junior Cup is still the main event .

A great tournament.

I don't know how much money they Junior clubs will have ended up from their respective (Senior) Scottish Cup runs this season, because I'm just thinking that perhaps through time, if there's a lot of cash involved from a Senior Scottish Cup run, winning the league could end up being as important as winning the Junior Cup. Of course, you could do both as has been suggested wink.gif

Without a doubt one of Europe's finest football competitions.

I'd rather Lok won the League than the Junior Cup, though we've not been in the Junior Cup final since 1998 and it's time we were back in the showpiece event.

Some absolute crap has won the Junior Cup in the past decade or so. It's completely down to luck of the draw, while in the Superleagues, the best team is usually there or thereabouts.

To qualify my earlier post, I'd say that it terms of prestige, nothing in the Junior game matches winning the Junior Cup.

To my mind, the Junior Cup is the big one as you feel all eyes are on the showpiece game. A Superleague can be won on a Tuesday night with a few hundered in attendance or, even worse, by another team losing so that you don't win it on the pitch. Leagues rather than cups usually indicate who is the best team but, as HTG says, the Superleagues aren't national (yet).

Junior cup without a doubt.

Lok, to be fair, while some teams can skip through to the final without every really being challenged, the finalists generally, will have had to have played some decent teams en-route, last year the Rose had Culter away / Lochee away / Pollock at home and then Arthurlie !, before Kelty in the Final, so it was hardly a stroll.... Already this year we have had Largs and Bo'ness away and Irvine Meadow at home with Cumnock next week, again hardly the easiest way to progress. The one good thing is that each of these games has been / will be really hard and that's when the boys step up..

The rose went 37 years between lifting the cup and despite many league triumphs in between, there was no comparison to the scenes of jubilation when winning it in 2002. Even last year the atmosphere and celebrations would suggest that it was the first time we had ever won it.

Junior Cup for me !!.

Leagues always win out over the cup, you can fluke a win in a cup but the league never lies.

But not always - Renfrew v Carnoustie was two highly average teams contesting a dreadful game - though that was totally overshadowed by the giant summer turd that was Tayport v Carnoustie, an absolutely shocking game of long ball football that thankfully was cut short by the Grand Prix overrunning!

I'm sorry, I don't speak Ayrshire.

You like the cup because you have a habit of winning it. We're the opposite. The Rose won 12 league titles without a Scottish win, which is why we appreciate it so much.

If you can remember it was your team we gubbed in 1986 , even gave you 2 of a start , probably the finest first half ever in a Scottish Junior Cup final ,

Next Question ..... has there been as high a scoring final since ? i know we wiped the floor with the Glens and scored 4 with no reply .
