Bought a new 37" LCD tv . Notice though when watching football especially that the picture tends to go a bit blurry before sharpening up. Is there something I can do to correct this or do I just have to get used to it?

You have to get used to it, if you have upgraded from a regular tv, unless you are watching something in HD, you will notice a reduction in quality, with an LCD, there is always a slight delay which can cause the ghosting or blurring.
