Full Version: 100 C64 Games In 10 Minutes....

While dicking about on YouTube and trying to find one interview with Rob Hubbard where he doesn't go "you know... er... well... you know" in a thick Yorkshire accent, I spotted this...

100 C64 Games in 10 Minutes .. which is pretty much what it is. Now the music isn't really up to much but I watched it through and realised I recognised, played and in fact cracked a good percentage of these games.

I am sure that if you search the comments enough you'll find a list of the games that are shown, or you could spend a couple of hours over at Lemon64 trying to match up screenshots, however just from memory alone, I think (think being the operative word here) that I can name 84 without needing any help. That's if they are all correct of course and I don't want to spoil it for myself by going and finding out. I'll let my old brain try and eek out every nostalgic moment it can. Now they have been a little sneaky as there are 3 games in there that are shown twice (sequels) but I was able to tell which was which.

I won't post my list quite yet, but I'd be interested to see if anyone is geeky (or old) enough to do better!

The games I have problems with are the following numbers (as in the order they are shown, and yes there are 100!)...

3, 5, 6, 14, 16, 32, 33, 34, 42, 44, 63, 65, 77, 87, 97, 99.

And of my answers I would say I've maybe got 2 or 3 that might be wrong.

I'd say I got my fair share right, but I struggled a bit on the older ones and some of the more obscure platformers - I was never really into them. Cant help with 3,5,6,14 or 16 and I lost count after that laugh.gif

One of them is really bugging me though - the one with the ninja rabbit. I had it, I played it to death and completed it, but Ive got a total block on the name!

Hard to believe that we found parallax scrolling so much fun laugh.gif

Notice theres an amiga one too - think I'll give that a go later.

That was fantastic, when the commando music came on, i think i actually had a wee tear in my eye, its funny the memories that seeing the games evoke.

It brought back stuff i hadnt thought about for years, i remembered unwrapping Knight Games on my 12 or 13th birthday, my friend and I having a farting contest during a long emlyn hughes session, going halfers with another mate for world games despite him not having a c64 and his mum holding it to ransom till i paid the other half of it, going down on boxing day, the only shop being open and buying rescue on fractalus, and the first boot up of the c64, loading commando, the game i got iwth it and playing it to death for the next day (till i got fractalus).

I knew what it was called, just not how to spell it and I didn't want to google to see what it was in case I gleaned some clues on other titles.

I spent about 20 minutes straining my poor brain to remember the names of some and I might go back through it tonight to see if I can get the ones I've missed.

oooh, that should make things interesting as I don't think I have either on the list. I do have Knight Games in there which I should probably change to World Games as it was the log rolling. As for Emlyn, I think the same Commodore original title got re-released in several guises.

Perhaps we should leave this until the weekend then post a list and see who's got what. wink.gif

Managed to spot Daley Thompson's in there... the ultimate joystick breaker, especially the 100m sprint.

The ultimate joystick breaker was Go for Gold, or Going for Gold, it had some ludicrous events, i was a daleys man on the speccy, the c64 one never really cut the mustard, it was a sloppy port, daley looked more like Bruno.
Swampy
Can't wait it right now due to work, but I think number three might be

Manic Mansion?

Can't wait to see all this later biggrin.gif

I'd be interested to know what number that is. Again another one I don't have on my list but I do have a place for it in at #77 as it's one of my "guesses". The other sports games shown are definitely not DT's Decathlon.

Three is definitely of that genre. A LucasArt game of some sort.

3's either manic mansion although i think it might be zak mccracken and the alien mindbenders. 5 is what the other is not.
Ric
As the title was Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders and the 5th one has an alien in it, I would go with your postulations... wink.gif

Game #14 has got me stumped, as I've played it, but for the life of me I cannot remember the title. I'm sure it had axis as one of the words, but as I said before I don't want to do any web searches.
Ric
Right, thought I would start posting some, 10 at a time.

The first 10 (for me) has the most amount of missing titles:

01: Last Ninja 2
02: International Karate +
03: ??? - Mystery Mansion?
04: Pirates
05: ??? - Zak McKraken
06: ???
07: Turrican 1
08: Archon 3 (Adept)
09: Bubble Bobble
10: Summer Games

--- Missing...

03: could be, as MarreZ says, the LucasArts games Zak McKraken or Mystery Mansion

05: same as above.

06: I soooo know this. It's the same System 3 engine as Tusker and Last Ninja. The graphics are done by Hugh Riley, you can tell, and I've resisted doing a google - I'm still hoping it will come to me before someone posts the answer.

07: I think is the first Turrican but there was 3 of them.

10: This could be a number of games but I'm going for the first instalment of Summer Games.

Not going to argue with any of those. Although, judging by the graphics I would say number #10 is the second instalment wink.gif

I was going on the logic that the Javelin is one of the "core" events you would include in the first one.

Could be wrong of course.. wink.gif

Well i'm spinning round on my swivel chair to face you, and give you a satisfied grin and the thumbs up. I am keeping up with the Commodore!
Ric
For the next 10, I have...

11: Ultima - not sure which one, could be the 1st, but it's deffo an Origin title.
12: Bruce Lee
13: Last Ninja 1
14: ?? Something for the life of me I've played but can never remember the name
15: Turrican 2
16: ??
17: Defender of the Crown
18: Asterix
19: International Football (the original Commodore cartridge release)
20: Combat School

Now after looking at #19 again, I notice the Audiogenic adverts so I've got that wrong. Could that be Emlyn Hughes?

#14 I am going to call Psitron or something similar, either that or something with axis or 5 in the name. I've tried but can't think of the title.

#16 I am completely stumped with, if anyone can spot that I'd be grateful.

More related youtubery ...

Press Play on Tape - A german(?) tribute band that perform C64 tunes. Their Comic Bakery remix which is performed in a boy band style-ee is quite funny.

C64 Orchestra - as it says on the tin, not sure how many pieces there need to be for something to be an orchestra, but these guys do some cracking covers.

I had #19 down as Matchday ... no? unsure.gif

Cant help with #16 other than its definetely a D&D game (maybe AD&D, but probably too early), or some rip off of D&D. It doesnt look like any D&D game I ever played! Is it possible that it was never released over here? D&D was a lot bigger in the States than it was in the UK, especially around that era.

Never had a C64. Recognised at least a dozen from the Spectrum equivalents though.

You guys do realise there's a complete list of the games involved in the full description of the video do you?

Once again SD, your common sense ruins people's fun... wink.gif

But, yes, the point was how many could you recognise without looking at the list.. rolleyes.gif

@Andy - #19 is deffo not International Soccer. Well it is, as it's the same engine, code, etc, just changed graphics. Matchday was released by Ocean was it not, as it was the John famousname (which of course I can't remember right now - Tweedie?) who was also responsible for Head over Heels (there is a great PC remake of that btw!). Anyway, as it was Ocean, I wouldn't expect to see Audiogenic advertising boards...

Too much info? unsure.gif

#19 i thought was Emlyn Hughes soccer, a game i spent more time playing than anything else on the c64, i remember recreating marc mcwalters goal against rangers with a superb 1-2, obviously it was a bit disapointing not to be able to bend it in.

Did you not read my post about being in a cracking group when I was younger, it's in the Commodore Format thread. My knowledge of C64 trivia is ridiculous, I can name you the hex interrupt vectors for where things like the code for Cyberload (one of the more popular tape loader wrappers) - it's $0333/$0334, just below the video bank - I can tell you the authors of graphics just by looking at them, title tunes just from listening, christ I can even spot certain coders specific foibles just from looking at the disassembly!

None of this, sadly, is of any use in the modern world. And despite continued drug and alcohol abuse that has wiped out all the useful things (like c# interface conventions) the C64 stuff remains untouched.

btw, has SD revealed there is no Santa yet? rolleyes.gif

Jon Ritman was the chap behind Match Day I think, but I could be wrong.

Match Day 2 on the Speccy was my favourite game for ages. Plaed it recently on an emulator, and it is AWFUL. laugh.gif

I have had both. The upside was the later versions were far better looking, and in the case of the MkII it was easily half the size.

The downside was that the C64c had a poorer quality SID chip in it, which made the music sound worse. Especially samples (yes the C64 had samples!).

The original matchday on the speccy was supreme, played it for years.

I really fancy buying a c64 and some games if i can track one down from somewhere, emulators are fine, but its just not the same.

Im going to order one of the plug in tv ones, you get 30 games with it, saves any hassle i suppose, although a few of the games are pish.

The best c64 game is still Alter Ego.

Why not just use the emulator and hook your PC up to your telly?
Ric
It depends on what you want. An emulator (nor the joystick with C64 games on it) can't emulate the hardware interrupts, which means lots of things don't work quite as well as they should. Only the original beige box has the original SID chip in it too, so music is never quite right either.

That said, for your average joe, an emulator would be fine.

Its never the same really, its all about the nostalgia, including the loading of the tapes or disks. We used to invest a lot of time in a game because it would take 3 or 4 minutes to load, not like now when you can change games instantly, you would play stuff just to save the hassle of changing.

I miss my youth, i cant help thinking i grew up in the best time that a kid could, everyone is over gratified and bored now.
Ric
Well it's funny because a "speed loader" on the C64 could put in a complete game (admittedly that is less Kb than it takes to send a text message from a phone!) within 2-3 minutes. Some of the modern games take equally as long.
