Apparently a midfielder, recently freed by QOS, has been training with Ayr for a couple of weeks.

Any idea who it could be, and is he - no doubt - shite?

Can only think it might be Mark Whorlow. He was freed two or three months back. Decent wee player from Stranraer area. Haven't seen an enormous amount of him because I rarely managed to catch the reserve games in previous seasons and his first team exposure has been limited to a few pre-season friendlies and a couple of minutes as a sub. Mainly left sided as either full back or midfield I think.

Ian McCall spoke fairly highly of him and gave him a two year contract at the start of last season but Chisholm decided he wasn't going to get any first team action imminently once he brought Robert Harris in to compete with McQuilken and let him go. If it is him then I hope he gets a deal because it'll be interesting to see how he would have come on given a run in the SFL. I doubt he was seriously ready to be thrown into division one but I might have tried to punt him out on loan rather than freeing him completely.

cheers. Not sure how accurate the information I got is, but he doesn't sound like the kind of charatcer we need to get out of our current relegation battle. I think Ayr need to be pulling out all the financial stops, to get into a promotion play-off spot. Somebody linked us with Steven Bowey earlier but he moved over to his home area, around Newcastle, so I doubt he'd want to sign for us. That's the type of player we need though.

I heard the Bowey rumour too, just after Brian Reid took over. They of course played together for us for a couple of seasons. Bowey didn't move to Newcastle, he's never lived anywhere else since he signed for us. He was living there even when playing for us and did say travel was a problem latterly when he was about the last of the Geordie revolution left which is why I was surprised to hear him mentioned for Ayr.

EDIT - Meant to say in the earlier answer that Mark Whorlow is 21 years old (actually older than I thought he was before I checked). If you're looking for experience you won't find it in him. Can't think of anyone else it could be other than him though if it's someone we've released this season.

Agreed. There's no way he'd put up with all the travelling. In addition, he's not the player he was a few seasons back and I very much doubt he'd do a job for you. He may have been a fantastic player for us, but we let him go at the right time.
