Thought I'd start a thread on this, no idea if anyone will respond but meh.

Started a new game of this last night, and I'd almost forgotten how good it is. Was only playing for an hour or so, but I'm just about to go on the train to the second Mako reactor. Will play it again tonight, in a couple of hours I'll be at the Shinra Building.

This game is like my TLotR- I play through it every year or so, haven't done so for a while though. Looking forward to it, there's always stuff I miss.
Swampy
I prefer my memories. I tried replaying it last year but was immediatley bored by the combat and many of the cutscenes.

In any case it's a distant third in the list of top Playstation RPGs after Suikoden 2 and Suikoden 1.
StandFree03
Completely agree with you, I love FFVII. Best game ever.

I play it every now and again but my PS2 is completely knackered form years of abuse.

I think I managed to do everything possible in the game. Beating Omega Weapon and Ruby Weapon was fucking hard though!!!
Gaz
Do you mean Emerald WEAPON? The underwater one? Can't remember if Omega was in FFVII.

Beating Emerald is the hardest thing I've ever done in any computer game, ever.
StewartyMac
Is that the game with the Chocobo Racing at some Golden Tower thing, the RPG equivalent of Blackpool Pleasure Beach?

I heard they were updating the graphics on it. Keeping the same style but making it look sharper and, well, better.

Any truth to this? Not sure if it for PS2 or PS3.

If you look on Youtube or Gamespot, you'll find a Final Fantasy VII "Tech Demo" that is an enhanced remake of the introduction to FFVII, where you see Aerith in the slums, with the camera panning out to show Midgar and then into the railway station at the first reactor.

Looks amazing, but it's only a Tech Demo to show what the PS3 can do. It hasn't been 100% confirmed if there ever will be a remake. Frankly I'm in two minds over whether it would improve it!

aye, Omega was VIII. That b*****d was hard and all.

Emerald was really difficult. Took me about an hour to kill him.

Ruby wasn't as difficult but still really hard. I remember he used to completely wipe out two of your characters and I had to keep on restarting so I would be left with the right one.

Any game that forces a reboot to succeed is not a "challenge" in and of itself.

Im not a big roleplaying game, but my wife loves the Final Fantasy games. She just got FFXII for christmas, and the graphics etc on that are brilliant i have to say.

No, you had three characters and Ruby weapon would destroy two of them early doors (usually), leaving you one character to finish the fight. If you were left with the weaker of the three it was pretty impossible. You needed to be left with your head honcho to kick his c**t in
Gaz
Well, I've now passed the Shinra Building and defeated Rufus Shinra, played it for another couple of hours last night. So now just about to to Kalm and learn what happened in Nibelheim... man I love this game.

Have you managed to get the master materia when playing before?

God, I feel like a geek and it's damn good
StandFree03
For the record, I thought FF VIII was excellent too. Graphically quite different but I really enjoyed it.
Gaz
Final Fantasy VIII was great too, but the junctioning system made the game too simple. Plus, the fact that your enemies levelled up as you did meant there was no real reward for levelling your guys up - get all your guys to level 100 and the enemies were no easier than they were when you were at 60, 70 etc.. Plus, the summons were too long (especially Eden) and one thing that always annoyed me was how long it took the game to refresh from one area to the next!

Yes, exactly. It just becomes a crapshoot, unless you had the foresight to level up to 99 beforehand or something tongue.gif

Final Fantasy VII was just the best RPG I ever played. Im not normally into RPGs, but I played this game for weeks on end and still go back to it sometimes now. Plus Aries was the first computer game character I can recall fancying.... tongue.gif ph34r.gif

Edited to say:

I never completed the game, spent all my time playing games at Gold Saucer!

The only three games that have ever come close to FFVII are FFX, Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.

Not played FFXII yet (got it on pre-order though) but played and completed FFX-2, alright, but not brilliant.

Keep them on the Warrior dressphere and they'll level up enough not to need any potions or anything like that ever, even during the final boss!
Gaz
Oops, forgot my daily update - isn't this interesting I hear you all say! tongue.gif

Now past Kalm and have just got the Chocobo Lure to let me get past the Midgar Zolom. Will reach Junon at some point over the next couple of days I imagine smile.gif

I dont play it but my wife has completed it with 100% now.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Final Fantasy VII is the greatest game of all time. The others in the series that I've played (VIII - X) don't even come anywhere close to matching it. I was ten when I first played it, and cried with Aeris died.

I was given the guide to the game by a mate after he completed it, and although I defeated Emerald Weapon (I struck lucky with Cait Sith's ultimate limit break), Ruby Weapon was nigh on impossible to defeat.

There's 100 parts of the game that are infinetely cool, but probably the best part is right at the start when you're stuck in Midgar, there's something very sleazy and sexy about it.

I'm feeling all romantic now, I think I might buy it for my PS2. Can you save PSOne games onto a PS2 memory card?

No, but you can buy a PS1 memory card and use that. Most games stores (EB games etc) will have used ones for about 5quid i would think.

(all of the above are atleast correct in the US.)

FFX is just absolutely brilliant. What a fantastic game. I actually down own a PS2, so only got a chance to play it when my mate loaned me it about 2 years ago and it was just jaw-dropping in every aspect.

FFX-2 was an embarrasment to the first FFX though. sad.gif

9 was great though. Fantastic opening sequence and some shit hot innovations for the series. The card mini-game thing is the best one in any FF game. Pisses all over blitzball and that daft coin game thing.

Mind you, battle square and chocobo racing were qulaity....
Andyboy
VII, VIII, IX and X are all class games for me however VII is no doubt the best.

The card game in VIII was far superior to the one in IX.

Well, I've now passed Kalm and learned the backstory of how Sephiroth went insane. I defy anyone to play this game, and at the point where Sephiroth says: "Out of my way. I'm going to see my mother." and his theme song kicks in, not to get a tingle on the back of their neck. Simply the greatest villain in any game ever.

Also got the Chocobo Lure, skipped over the marshes, through the cave and have now reached Junon. Defeated that big crazy monster fish thing, saved Priscilla and got the Shiva materia and now up top in Junon, about to pretend I'm a Shinra soldier...

StandFree03, just noticed your earlier post. I haven't had any of the master materias before, but there are so many things I've to do in the game that I'm hoping to do them on this playthrough.

I had a game where I pretty managed to do everything in it (with the exception of beating Ruby Weapon). I got about two of each master materia and got the maximum limit breaks for every character (with the exception of Aeris) which took me ages. The Master Summon's pretty good to have.
Gaz
Crossed the ocean from Junon to Costa Del Sol last night. Forgot I had a boss fight against Jenova, and was very, very lucky to beat it - a couple of luckily-timed Limit Breaks saw me through.

That's one thing I never got before, I only got the joy of seeing it when Cloud kicks Sephiroth's a*se in the final battle (the one you can't lose). Looking forward to getting it this time!

New update! Now passed through Costa Del Sol, up through Mount Corel and made it to Gold Saucer. Wrongly accused of killing people, thrown in Corel Prison but now released and pardoned, went through Goganga and accquired Yuffie, now about to head to Cosmo Canyon.

Man I love this game biggrin.gif

I tell you, apart from the Ruby Weapon, I thought the hardest guy to beat was the Demon Gate in the temple. You know, the chap who dumps boulders on top of yr head, usually doing 1000+ worth of damage. Took me ages to finally beat him!

I tell you what, you are completely right. When I first started playing it, I really struggled against that boss. It wasn't until I started using spells like protect and stuff that I actually beat him. It's a classic example of how good this game is. Most games of this type can be easily won by just constantly attacking and not bothering with a plan. I had to completely change the way I went about things when I got to that bit.

There was an Enemy Skill you could pick up quite early on in the game called "Big Guard", that gave you Haste, Protect and Shell; a must for bosses like the Demon Gate.

Never would I have thought a thread like this on here.

Many people think that FF7 is the best one because it was the first one that they play, where in fact my favourite is either 5 or 7. Seven is brilliant however, but I prefer the systems of 5.

As regarding the FF7 remake on the PS3. It isn't going to happen. Square Enix have said that if they were to re-do the whole game with new graphics, it would take them 4 or 5 years, and it is money they would rather not spend - more over creating new Final Fantasy games and creating some other new game series'.

This involves the 'other FF7 Games' such as Before Crisis, Crisis Core and Drige of Cerebus. And of course, Advent Children.

As for the weapons in FF7, Omega is in there. You have to fight Omega Weapon as it is flying about the map, and in order to progress the story you must beat it. It is a bitch to defeat, but you get Clouds final weapon from it.

Ruby was the one in the sand, and Emerald underwater. Both are suprisingly easy when you have the right set-up.

You're telling me that FFVII wouldn't sell if Square remade it for the PS3? It would be a sure bet to sell more than any new "game series". Look at the likes of Dirge of Cerberus, utter pish. There's no way that sort of franchaise would outsell a FFVII remake.

And V was only played by rich little import geeks, this is a VII love-fest, okay? wink.gif
EWS
Hey, I played it by using an emulator first and then when they released it for the PS, alongside 4.

7 is great. I remember the first time I fought Proud Clod...or something like that.
Gaz
Sorry EWS, but it's Diamond or Ultima WEAPON (I can't remember which but I'm 95% sure it's Ultima, as you get Cloud's Ultimate Weapon from it) you fight when flying through the air, not Omega. Omega only appears in the FF7 world in Dirge of Cerberus.

You know something, you are right. Guess I must have had a brain fart when I was typing up that post. Though if I remember, he could possibly be name checked in the game.

I really want to go back and play this game again now, that and all the other Final Fantasy's.

Can't remember Omega being namechecked in it. You've got Emerald (underwater), Ruby (desert North of Corel), Sapphire (destroyed by the Sister Ray from Junon), Ultimate (first encountered in Mideel and then flying around the world) and Diamond (destroyed by the Sister Ray from Midgar).

It's definitely in Dirge of Cerberus though.

There's another WEAPON, Jade, that's in Before Crisis.

God knows eh!

Ever since I heard that they were remaking Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSP I have had this desire to play all the better Final Fantasy games. 7 is great 8 is ok, 9 is just awful as is 10. Infact, 10 is the only one of the newer games that I haven't completed.

That reminds me, I am going to head into town to get an import of FF3 for the DS now I think.

Do you mean FF3, or FF6 (released as FF3 for the SNES)? I've played FF6, haven't completed it though but got it on an emulator and played a fair whack, brilliant game. I'm surprised you didn't like 10 though, I thought it was brilliant!

I actually mean FF3. It was released on the DS, and although it hasn't been released over here, I have a pretty decent indie shop that does cheap Imports. It is amazing, back to the best I think, and addictive.

Never played either of the Chrono's, I so want to though.

With 10, it didn't feel like a FF game.

Final Fantasy VII is my favourite game ever. I can't believe it is now approaching 10 years since my first game of it. I still remember all my character names etc and have the original save slot somewhere...

I played through the game last Summer, and that was the 5th time I have played it start to finish. I thoroughly enjoyed it, probably largely due to the fact that I haven't played if for a few years. However, I did not bother myself with so many of the countless extras, for example getting a gold chocobo, the KOTR materia etc and ultimately beating Emerald Weapon (something I have yet to do myself!!).

I am currently about 10 hours through Final Fantasy 8 (and plan to play 9 again when I finish this one). I bought FF7 in the Summer and had no problem motivating myself to play it to completion. I was addicted from the start. With FF8, though, I played a couple of hours, 2 or 3 months ago, then stopped. I have recently continued with it, as a mate at work has started playing it and is now on disc 4. I never actually completed FF8 when I originally played it, getting stuck on the final disc of all places, and this is the first time I have returned to it. I can hardly remember any of the game I have played so far so it is quite enjoyable.

I much preferred FF9 to FF8 and have played through it all once, and then half way or so again. I will start it from scratch in a few months.

p.s. disappointined to find out about the way the bosses level up as you do on FF8. Seems a bit pointless...
