Yes.

It is not going active in our area for another 9-12 months. Obviously a bit of a problem laugh.gif

I think with any of the new providers, folk should probably let things settle in before chosing their services. Talk Talk have been the first problem provider, and I can only see Sky Broadband following suit.

Does the modem work via the Satellite dish?

I always presumed that it was just an application you put on your PC and that you used whatever service provider you had.
But your comments make it sound like thats not the case.....

Sky broadband does not use the dish. They did launch a service which downloaded via the dish but used the telephone line to upload, IIRR. It didnt take off and I presume was binned. unsure.gif

Sky are currently offering broadband, in the same way that any other company who doesnt own telephone lines does.

Are you getting confused with Sky by broadband? Where you can watch movies using broadband? You can use any provider for that, you simply register on the sky website.

Yeah that must be what Im thinking of.

I was just wondering is Skys broadband was using the dish as if so, it would be useless to me.
I play alot of games over the internet and the ping from a satellite connection would be horrendous.
Would be fine for downloading but useless for gaming as the delay would make games unplayable.

Anyway, that appears not to be the case.

Im sticking with Blueyonder as Ive had no problems with it for years.

Which is why, when they did do it, they used the telephone line to upload. Given that it was in the very early days of, or may even have been pre, broadband it gave very little benefit.

Ive had no problems with Freedom2surf either, but if Sky ever do free broadband in my area I'll bite their hands off laugh.gif

But even with that your download packet would have a delay.
Meaning that when you pull the trigger, by the time it gets to the enemy player, he wouldnt be there.

Its only about a 1 second delay. But thats an eternity in online FPS games.

But as I said, it was in the very early/pre days of broadband. I cant see the difference between having a ping of over 200 (as I regularly did playing CS) on dial-up to using a considerably faster speed via satelite.

Its all academic, at the end of the day, as it didnt work and was ditched ... maybe for the reasons you say, I dont know. Completely different from their current broadband offering and Sky By Broadband.

Sky simply bought an ISP, Easynet, rebranded the product and are now giving it away for next to noithing to people who have TV contraacts with them.

I expect they will be making next to nothing on the broadband service but it gives them the tie in to keep and increase their TV subscribers and also gives them the potential to do TVoIP which is exactly what BT are launching next year.

Ping would probably be closer too 500 amybe 1000 with that though.

Anyway as you say, its doesnt matter now.

I wont play on a server if Im over a ping of 80.
