Make it so, Watty

Or do Alexander, Prunty and out-of-position Dailly offer more? I know what Craig Broon would do...
Pompey.
Any time we are considering an Englishman for a cap, who says he wants to play for Scotland, the SFA should get a Steve McClaren impersonator to phone the player, and offer him a game for England.

If he accepts, he's not committed to Scotland and shouldn't be picked.

That is an excellent plan Pompey - I dont want guys who consider Scotland as their sceond best options and only pick us because their first choice doesnt wnat them!

Aye, it was that Gary McSheffrey who got me thinking.

Ludicrous stuff, really, "I always wanted to play for England, but it doesn't look as if I'll get the chance now. I'd like to play for Ireland, but if they don't want me, I'd consider Scotland" ohmy.gif blink.gif
Coup
He looks a very promising player and i would be very suprised if he wasnt called up to and England squand for a freindly in the next 6months.

He has had some very good games for Rangers this seasosn and has impressed me alot and i would take him for Scotland. Mothers and Fathers are fine for me but its when its a Gran or Grampa thats a little bit too far. If he wants to play for Scotland and give his all for the jersey then let him. Right back isnt our strongest area, and he would do a very good job for us. And his free-kicks arent that bad either wink.gif

I didnt think he qualified for Scotland anyway- apart from the fact he probably isnt up to international football.

Here's the original thread on it, and no, if he's playing at that level, I'd imagine you're right.

I agree. What sort of person picks and chooses his national origin, based on where he can get a game?

Surely you know whether you feel Scottish, English or whatever other nationality you are?

Taking players who aren't good enough for England may give us a better squad, but it just seems morally wrong.

I've said before, the easiest way to solve this is to make any player eligible for two or more countries to state on his first professional forms what nationality he considers himself to be. He should then be restricted to that country for the rest of his career.

And anyone who says that they really want to play for England but would consider Scotland shouldn't be allowed to even watch a Scotland game. Either that or call him up, give him a run out for 10 minutes or so off the bench and then never let him see hide nor hair of a squad ever again, thus scuppering his chances of ever playing international football. Just out of badness ph34r.gif

I've been saying that for years. First time I've seen anyone else mention it though. biggrin.gif

Maybe not his first professional forms, but certainly by his 20th birthday.

That said, I'm of the camp that says we should always use the best players available to us. I've have no qualms whatsoever about picking a player who would improve the squad whether they are dyed in the wool Scottish or not. Never did the Irish any harm.

Fixed.

Hutton is completely dire.
