I'm trying to connect my laptop to my brother's so that I can transfer files across, but it won't let me. I'm using an ethernet cable, and i've run the network set-up wizard on both machines, but nothing's come up, and it's saying my local area network adapter is both unplugged and firewalled for some reason.

Is it possible to connect the two directly, or am I being an idiot? Can an expert with braincells run me through it?

You would need to use a cross cable. It tells you everything you need to know here.

Yup,

You need a twisted pair. Should be easy enough........
