Ireland following on are currently 35 runs behind with 5 wickets left.

You would expect Pakistan to win comfortably but most of the runs in this Test have been scored in the afternoon and evening sessions, if Ireland could get ahead and leave Pakistan to bat on the fifth morning - unlikely, but who knows?

******************

Close of Play - Ireland 319/7 (139 ahead)

Terrific Test match - betting was suspended temporarily yesterday when Ireland were 9/4 (the score not the odds!).

Maybe Ireland have batted too well as they will continue their Innings in the morning, when conditions have favoured the bowlers so far.

************************

Pakistan win by 5 wickets - not quite enough runs on the board for Ireland once the early morning zip had worn off!

Talk now of scrapping the toss in test matches. Ok the stats certainly favour the home team but I have my doubts about this. I think I'm right in saying in county cricket the away team can chose to bat or bowl or toss as normal.

I thought they had the option to choose to bowl first or use the toss?

I don't hate the idea. Test series victories are so infrequent it feels like something should be done to help the visiting side.

I don't hate it, either.  Give it a try, see what happens.

What I do hate is the England squad.  A specialist wicket keeper playing as a batsman at 7, and Bairstow, playing at 5 as a wicketkeeper, which is far too high.   All over the place, that batting lineup.

Really? I think both justify their inclusions as batsmen. I think they should have both been in there about a year ago.

I think you keep Bairstow at 7 if he keeps the gloves.  If you put Bairstow at 5, give the gloves to Buttler and bat him at 7.   A specialist batsman (who is actually a keeper, but has been picked as a batsman) at number 7 is all kinds of weird, especially as Bairstow's batting is only so highly rated relative to his position.  He goes from being the world's best number 7 to a bog standard number 5.     So what England have done is replace a mediocre number five with another mediocre number five, and an exceptional number 7 with a who-knows-what number 7.

It's like Moeen.  He should bat absolutely nowhere other than number eight for England.  He's perfectly suited to it.

People could argue what does it matter, but I just think the balance is better with Bairstow at 7.

Can see both sides with this one, released from that pressure of batting with the tail and having to hurry his run rate along Bairstow has the ability to be more than just an average no 5. That said given how mentally tiring keeping wicket is and given England's recent record of early collapses his workload may become too much, especially if he keeps opening in 50 over games. If it goes to plan then a potential 5-8 of Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler and Woakes should score a lot of runs quickly. Hope Dom Bess gets a good run as well, looks like a decent young spinner who is a decent batsman to come in at 9, given how good Pakistan and India players tend to be when facing spin my worry is he doesnt get the run in the team to establish himself.

If Virat Kohli's neck injury is not a season ender then this could be a very long summer. 184ao vs Pakistan is not a good start.

Said it previously but JE Root is not a captain and the selection process is a joke.  The lack of application to proper batting is pathetic, its not the IPL to blame, its poor leadership by ECB, poor  captaincy and poor shot selection.
Especially the last bit. Michael Vaughan bangs on about the shot selection incessantly and how they always try to hit their way out of trouble when wickets start to fall. Nobody is willing to do a Boycott and stand and defend for any length of time.

Babar Azam out for a month so will play no further part in this test. If England actually remember that test matches last 5 days and bat accordingly they still have a chance of winning this. Pitch is starting to look a bit lively and if they get a few early wickets in the 4th innings then Pakistan do tend to collapse. Chances are however that the brainless batting will continue and Pakistan will knock off the 70 odd required with no dramas.

Just turned it on after the cycling finished. Heading for an innings defeat at home against what isn't even a great Pakistan side is absolutely abject stuff.

Mr 50 fails to convert again.

Saw a stat earlier, Kohli converts 57pct Smith 49 Williamson 41 and Root only 25pct

Take the captaincy off him now.

I would agree if there was an obvious better option, but I can't really see anyone in the current side who fits the bill.

They have to think outside the box, they need a leader, not necessarily the greatest player but someone to step up.

Buttler has done well elsewhere, maybe even Morgan.  Could really go for it and bring in Livingstone.

Giving it too Root has really hurt him.
