4.20pm Liam Brickhill, our correspondent at the ground, says: "The rain is getting much heavier now, and where we had patches of blue we now have only grey. There are also big puddles forming on the covers." He adds: Local knowledge suggests that if the rain comes from the Golf Course End, it could be the sort that sets in. That's the side that this storm came from."

This really isn't looking good.

Bowl the Windies out for less than 200 and then are the victim of the dodgiest of dodgy LBWs and then is pisses down with us a handful behind the D/L rate. What a typical Scottish way to not qualify for a World Cup. One on our own bloody doorsteps. Arrgghhh.

What an unbelievable effort from Scotland over the whole tournament.

What a heartbreaking way for it all to end. The West Indies may well have still won and with five Scottish wickets down they were favourites to so but to be denied the chance to chase down the target is just cruel.

And I really don't want to think about Berrington being given not out and that being enough to have seen Scotland win on D/L. That's beyond cruel.

Unbelievable.  Out thanks to that joke of a LBW dismissal.

The Scotland players must be devastated but deserve a lot of credit.  They bowled brilliantly and were keeping up batting wise.  Absolutely gutting for them!

Gutted. If it wasn’t for bad luck we’d have no luck at all.

Ridiculous umpiring decision  compounding two ridiculous ICC decisions (to restrict the World Cup to a miserly 10 participants, and not to use DRS in the qualifying tournament).

Yep, the ICC will be delighted. They have their slimmed-down tournament for the elite, with the lesser ODI nations and all the associate nations looking on enviously from the cheap seats. Out of sight and out of mind. Great job in spreading the gospel of a minority sport globally.

Cricket: declining in popularity, still dripping with the last vestiges of Empire.

The ICC: serving the elite’s sense of entitlement since 1909.

Drat and triple drat

Now that I've got that out of the way...

The pre-tournament favourites may have qualified but this wasn't a procession by any means.

There has been very little between the top 5 teams (In the case of Zimbabwe and Scotland there was literally nothing between them)

Afghanistan are sitting 5th but they beat West Indies, fell two runs short of  Zimbabwe and for that matter weren't that far away from beating Scotland.

What this tournament has demonstrated is the stupidity of cutting the number of teams in the world cup.

10 might have been a sensible size once but the drop off in quality between the top 10  and the remainder is nowhere near as precipitous as it once was.

Just in from work and catching up.

Absolutely gutted for them. The Berrington decision is a shocker, it's not even close. Why was there no DRS? I'm sure they went to the 3rd Umpire in the Ireland game the other day when there was an appeal from their keeper that was shown on replay to be a bump ball?

Even our cricket does "glorious failure" now :(.

Zimbabwe + West Indies = ICC delighted.

That wasn't glorious failure. That was a disgrace. That key decision was as close as you'll see to an umpire cheating.  Some c**t should hook him before we get on the plane home. He'll be away home with a big bag of coin from Sky and the ICC.

Basically they've got exactly what they wanted - a World "Cup" which is exactly a single huge league with Semi-Finals & Final, and the 10 teams they wanted too. I see this is also the format of 2023.

It's interesting to contrast with football - expanded from 24 to 32 teams some 20yrs ago, and again to 48 teams in 8yrs; rugby union - expanded from 16 to 20 teams some 19yrs ago, and look like again to 24 teams in 5yrs/9yrs; and even rugby league - following its reinstatement it's been expanded from 10 to 14 and again to 16 in 3yrs time. Meanwhile cricket has 'downsized' from 16 to 14 and now to 10. You've even got countries with full test and ODI status - Afghanistan and Ireland - physically unable to qualify.
