The Cricket Thread

It always goes on way too long but that's nothing they couldn't fix by, say, having four groups of four.

However, the TV deal guarantees at least nine Indian games must be played at the next two World Cups.

The idea to reduce the number of teams wasn't even put to any sort of vote.

Indian TV money > democracy/the future of the game.

It's the same short-sightedness that has seen cricket not really bother trying to get in the Olympics, something that would do more to spread the game than anything else.

Current TV deals are all-powerful and must not be threatened though.

It's been a better contest than I expected so fair play to Bangladesh.

Doesn't bode well for Scotland's chances of qualifying for the next World Cup though with only ten entrants.

Based on the current ODI rankings Bangladesh should qualify straight through as one of the top 8 teams in the world. They're closer to 6th than 8th.

Pakistan and the West Indies are stuck trying to avoid the qualification tournament and they're far too close to call

1: Australia (119)
2: South Africa (115)
3: New Zealand (113)
4: India (110)
5: England (107)
6: Sri Lanka (101)
7: Bangladesh (96)
8: Pakistan (89)
9: West Indies (88)
10: Afghanistan (52)
11: Zimbabwe (46)
12: Ireland (42)

A side effect of this is that the TV companies might not get their guaranteed India vs Pakistan game after all.

It all seems a bit strange. There has to be an acceptance that short bowling is part of the game. If anything, the focus should be on improving the protection that the helmet offers.

The players' testimony just looks irrelevant to me.

Yep all pretty distasteful. The worry is that seemingly the modified helmets in use now still dont offer the required protection. Don't think the hughes qc comes out of this at all well (is he trying to pave way for a civil case?). Seems to have put the hughes family through unnecessary pain by insinuating this wasnt an accident which is pretty grubby. Taking on field incidents and sledges out of context will never give a truly representative view of a multi day match.

In fairness, that Cricinfo piece isn't very well written. Most of the questions being asked are obligatory. They have to check every single factor into the incident, even if those factors are patently absurd. The QC is just doing his legally mandated job, and that piece frames it as if he's insinuating foul play.

I'm not so sure the questioning at the inquest is that misguided, Hughes' weakness facing shortpitched bowling was well known as far back as his international career began. England certainly targeted him this way in the 2009 Ashes series and after losing his place two Tests into that series he was always on the fringes of the Australian team.

For me he was the archetypal player who was going to get injured by a bouncer - not quite top class as a batsman, aggressive in the way he played the game so the he was more likely to try and attack his way out of this type of bowling than use evasive tactics (Mike Gatting and Phil Simmons are two others that spring to mind). Obviously what happened was a tragedy that no-one wanted but if the alleged sledging did occur it was pretty tasteless.

How far to you go to win?

England won the toss and elected to bat, but it's been a nightmare day so far, Stokes has just been bowled to make it 106-5 not that long after lunch. It's on Sky Sports Mix today.

Moeen Ali has been out 3 times lbw, but overturned them all on review.

258/7 at stumps (92 overs in the day due to the amount of spin, a modern miracle!)

Seems like a decent enough total especially if they can get up to 300 although given how much it's turning already the pressure will be on the England spinners to deliver.

The young spinner for Bangladesh looks like a potential world class bowler albeit the pitch was perfect for him. The delivery that did for moeen was a corker. Think Bangladesh will regret the other bowlers not backing him up better....reckon England already have a decent score and with 3 spinners plus root n 3 seamers could be tough to match that score.

At 21-3 I'm sure England would have bitten your hand off for that total. Some amount of turn for a day 1 pitch, and if it is starting to break up even more then it could get very silly in the next few days.

I'd have absolutely no problem with doing away with bouncers altogether.

Brilliant over of bowling just before lunch by Moeen Ali (who looks like he's bulked up and added a couple of ticks to his bowling to my untrained eye) has Bangladesh 29/2 at lunch.  293 looks like a good score at this point.
