Match 27 - Belgium 2 Tunisia 0

An oddly low-scoring game that could easily have finished with seven or eight goals going in. It's the big Belgium show in the first half, with Mouez Hassen producing a solid performance to keep the Red Devils at bay, until Dries Mertens finds a through ball on the half-hour mark and slips it into the net from close range. Into the second half, and an early looping cross from Meunier finds Mertens again, who finishes with a diving header across Hassen's goal.

Two down, Tunisia begin to chase the game, and are almost immediately rewarded when Sassi hits the post at the end of a slick passing move. Tunisia get the next quality chance on the hour, when Chaalali finds himself clear in the centre of the goal and somehow misses from six yards. Belgium move to regain control, and Eden Hazard smacks the bar with a strike from the edge of the box. Mainly Belgian pressure from then on, with a header from a corner coming off the upright with fifteen minutes to go, followed immediately by a quick Tunisian break finished by a barnstorming volley from Chaalali that Courtois does well to turn wide. Belgium come close with a variety of chances towards the end, but end up declaring for two.

That's Belgium through, and they only require a draw against England to definitely top the group. Assuming England beat Panama, Tunisia need a Belgian win in the final game while winning themselves, along with a sizeable goal difference swing in their favour.

Match 28 - South Korea 1 Mexico 3

Mexico boss the whole game, with the Koreans happy to sit back and let Mexico attack, which pays dividends in the opening minutes when they take the lead. A long cross finds Son Heung Min at the far post, who cuts back for Koo Ja Cheol to fire into the roof of the net. Their lead doesn't last long, however, as a long passing move finds Javier Hernandez on the edge of the box, who strikes a curling shot around Cho Hyun Woo's despairing dive to equalise with ten minutes gone.

The rest of the game sees little threat from South Korea, who seem happy to shut their opponents out. The Mexicans patiently pass the ball around, and give the Korean keeper a stern test on several occasions, but it takes until the 75th minute before they finally take the lead, Andres Guardado finishing from a through ball into the packed Korean penalty area. Korea have little in reserve to help them chase the game, and it's Mexico who finish the scoring, with Harold Lozano finding himself completely unmarked on the right of the penalty area, firing across the keeper into the far side of the goal with minutes to spare.

Mexico are well on the way to the Second Round, with only a draw against Sweden necessary to get them there, though results elsewhere could see them through regardless. South Korea now need to beat Germany even to have a chance of making it through - no biggie.

Match 29 - Germany 2 Sweden 2

Germany-a-go-go, with constant waves of Teutonic attacks laying siege to the Swedish goal, although most shots end up flying high and wide. With amusing inevitability, Sweden have their first attack on the half hour and score, a wild Augustinsson shot from range deflecting to Emil Forsberg's feet, who taps in from a couple of yards out. The Germans seem stunned, and allow the rest of the half to peter out, with Sweden having more of the play going into the second half.

Just as it's starting to look as though Germany won't be threatening the Swedish goal again, a simple passing move through the defence is finished by Mario Gomez, who actually hits the target on the hour. After fifteen minutes of non-threatening faffing about by both sides, some awful defensive positioning leaves Marco Reus free to pick up a pass on the six yard line, successfully utilising the power of not skying your shots.

Having taken the lead, the Germans go back to finishing wildly, but are punished in the 84th minute when Marcus Berg manages to slip away from his marker right in front of the goal, and calmly sidefoots home a pass from Pontus Jansson. Germany push forward again to find a winner, forcing a good save from Robin Olsen, before Tony Kroos clips the bar with virtually the last kick of the game. Quite how Germany managed to avoid winning this one is a mystery, but the Swedes did well to stick with it.

Fortunately for the Germans, a win against South Korea will see them safely through to the last sixteen, although a draw could be enough if the Swedes lose. Sweden need a win, or a very improbable high-scoring draw if Germany v South Korea ends as a tie.

Match 31 - Senegal 1 Japan 0

A surprisingly even game, brought to life by a splendid strike from M'Baye Niang on the half-hour, cracking the inside of one post and just creeping in at the other. Barring a couple of later stops from Kawashima in goal, the first half is otherwise short on goalmouth incident. Same goes for the second half, with few shots on goal, none of which seriously look like going in. It takes until the 83rd minute for a proper goalscoring opportunity, when Ismaila Sarr runs into Nagatomo in the penalty area, which is apparently enough for the referee to award a penalty to Senegal. Thankfully for Japan, Kawashima drives the right way and fingertips Sadio Mane's waist-high shot around the post. Japan did a decent job keeping Senegal quiet throughout the whole game, but never looked remotely like getting the goal they needed.

A draw against Colombia will see Senegal through, although a Colombian win against Poland will see even that become academic. Japan are hoping that Poland win instead, that they can then beat Poland themselves, and that Senegal put Colombia to bed, all with a goal difference swing in Japan's favour. Good luck with that, lads.

Spoiler

Match 32 - Poland 3 Colombia 0

A sound spanking administered to Los Cafeteros, with Poland scoring all three goals well before half-time. Colombia start the game well, but some wild finishing gives Poland time to establish themselves. Fifteen minutes in, an incisive through ball from Milik finds Piotr Zielinski on the penalty spot, who takes the chance well. Colombia indulge in more poor finishing, before Poland score again on the half hour - a Zeilinski free-kick is flicked over Colombia's defence via Grosicki's head, and Lewandowski heads the ball past an out-of-position Ospina. Straight from kick-off, a sharp passing move sees Poland cut through Colombia's defence again, with Lewandowski striking the post, only for Milik to tap in the rebound.

The third goal kills the game. Both sides pass the ball around well, but there are no more clear-cut scoring chances until the last ten minutes, when Cuadrado finds himself one-on-one with the keeper and blasts well wide, underlining the appalling finishing that separated the teams.

Poland's goalscoring exploits see them hop into second place ahead of Colombia on goal difference. They need to equal or better Colombia's result in their final games to qualify. A victory by two goals or more in Colombia's final game would see them through; a draw would be enough if Japan beat the Poles.

We're halfway through, so time for another look at the group tables. Interesting to see which games have broadly turned out the same in the real thing, and which have been well off the mark (Russia struggling to score, for one). More tomorrow, when we'll start the simultaneous commentary (ooh).

Golden Boot

4 - Suarez (Uruguay)
2 - Jahanbakhsh (Iran)
2 - Griezmann (France)
2 - Sow (Senegal)
2 - El Said (Egypt)
2 - Mitrovic (Serbia)
2 - Mertens (Belgium)
2 - Lewandowski (Poland)

Still only ten yellow cards and no reds. Very few penalties too. Very well behaved, these virtual players.

Saudi Arabia 0 Egypt 1
Uruguay 1 Russia 0

Heading into the second half...

Spoiler

48' - Uruguay have the early pressure after kick-off, and some sloppy defending allows Cavani to shoot from the edge of the box...

Spoiler

...but it's a weak shot that's heading wide, and is helped on its way by the keeper.

56' - Saudi Arabia push forward after half-time to try and save their World Cup campaign. From a corner kick, Al Khaibari meets the ball with his head, and his high header plummets down behind El Shenawy...

Spoiler

From the resultant corner, Al Bulavhi sends a similar header spiralling towards the Egyptian goal...

Spoiler

...but it lands on the roof of the net. Nice try.

70' - The Saudis keep up the pressure, with a slick passing move finding Al Dawsari near the penalty spot. He strikes the ball towards the top corner...

Spoiler

71' - Chances are few and far between over at the Samara Arena, and Russia are coping well in defence as they try to get back into the match...

Spoiler

...until a terrible defensive mix-up sees Kutepov robbed of the ball in the area, and it ends up at the feet of the predatory Suarez, who makes no mistake. 2-0 to Uruguay, and a huge relief to Egypt.

78' - Egypt conceding stings them into a response, and they go looking to regain the lead. A long ball finds Mo Salah on the wing, who finds Mohsen in the area...

Spoiler

...and he taps the ball in from a few yards out! 2-1 to Egypt, and surely the place in the second round is theirs!

83' - Still two down, Russia are going out with a whimper, as Uruguay play keep-ball without threatening. Then, as Golovin attacks down the flank, suddenly space opens up in the centre for Smolov to run into. The cross comes in, and finds him in the six yard box! Hope for Russia?

Spoiler

He blasts into the side netting, and surely Russia's faint hopes die with his miss.

87' - Saudi Arabia haven't given up, however, and hit back with a dangerous counter attack. Al Khaibari finds himself on the end of a pass in acres of space. He's through on the keeper with time to spare! He must score!

Spoiler

El Shenawy fingertips his shot over the bar! Surely he could have done better.

Russia miss a gilt-edged chance deep into injury time, but it would have been far too late anyway.

Both games finish...

Spoiler

...and it's Egypt who take second place, with their reward likely to be a tie against Spain. Uruguay's first place finish will probably see them take on Iran or Portugal. Russia just about avoid the ignominy of last place at their own tournament.

Final Scores:

Saudi Arabia 1 Egypt 2
Uruguay 2 Russia 0

Group B

Match 35: Iran v Portugal
Match 36: Spain v Morocco

Spain are through, but can still end up in second place if they lose to Morocco, who are out and playing purely to try and avoid finishing last in the group. Iran will qualify with a draw, while Portugal require a win to avoid the early trip home. On to the games...

Spoiler

4' - an early through pass finds Boutaib behind the Spainish defence! He takes the shot early!

Spoiler

...only to see it fly high over the crossbar.

10' - a slow start in Saransk, but Portugal finally force a corner. The ball comes in, but doesn't appear to be doing much until it lands at the feet of Ronaldo on the edge of the box! He shoots!

Spoiler

The ball flies across the face of the goal - the keeper's beaten!

Spoiler

...but it clips the crossbar and flies over!

15' - Portugal are piling forward, but Iran are coping admirably. Silva is forced to take a shot from the edge of the box, but it's on target!

Spoiler

Beiranvand dives to his left and fingertips the shot! No goal!

16' - Spain pass the ball around on the edge of the Moroccan penalty area. Isco decides to take a shot!

Spoiler

It flies low to the keepers left, just inside the post! 1-0 to Spain!

23' - Portugal continue to press, but the Iranian defence stands firm. Suddenly the ball is cleared, and Iran are on the counter attack! The cross in is cleared, but only as far as Taremi, who follows in...

Spoiler

...and is hauled back by Guerreiro! The ref points to the spot! It's a penalty for Iran!

It's Rezaeian to take it. He steps up confidently. He takes a stuttering run up...

Spoiler

It smacks the bar and bounces down into the danger area! Who'll get to it first?

Spoiler

The Portguese defence blooters the ball into the crowd. Corner for Iran, but what a let-off for Portugal.

The corner is fired over, and pings off a few heads before Taremi directs it towards the goal! This time, surely!

Spoiler

The bar again! Portugal get the rebound to safety. What do Iran have to do?

34' - Over in Kaliningrad, the two sides have come to a detente, with Spain happy to push the ball around in Morocco's half on the understanding that the Moroccans don't cause any problems.

Vazquez threatens to break the tedium with a fizzing shot from the near side of the box...

Spoiler

...which goes the wrong side of the post and into the side-netting. Back to the stand-off.

44' - Iran really pushing back again the Portuguese tide, but neither side manage to carve out any more chances, until Ronaldo picks up a pass on the very edge of the area, digs the ball out from under his feet, and fires a scorcher towards the goal!

Spoiler

Unfortunately, it's straight at the keeper, who throws his arms up to deflect the ball away. The defence cope with the loose ball.

45' - Little action between Spain and Morocco, but the Spanish get a corner before the break. Silva floats the ball over to the near corner of the six yard box, where it's met by the head of Diego Costa!

Spoiler

It crashes into the underside of the bar and back out!

Spoiler

...but it's dealt with by the Moroccan defence.

45' - Portugal have a late shot when Joao Moutinho picks up a cut-back in the box and tries to angle the ball around the keeper...

Spoiler

...unsuccessfully, as it passes well wide.

...back into the fray for the second half...

Spoiler

60' - neither side threatening in the opening fifteen minutes, but it's been particularly dull stuff over in Kaliningrad. Diego Costa finally livens things up with a diagonal through ball to Isco in the area. He's through on the keeper!

Spoiler

It strikes the post and comes back out!

Spoiler

...but Isco was offside. Free-kick for Morocco.

65' - time running out for Portugal, who need a goal, but they just can't cause Iran any real problems. After successfully soaking up the Iberian pressure for twenty minutes, suddenly they break! Dejagah sprints clear of Portugal's defensive line from thirty yards out and makes a bee-line for the goal! He's one-on-one with Rui Patricio!

Spoiler

...and meekly chips the ball into the keeper's hands. Iran with by far the better opportunities so far, but will they be punished for their profligacy?

70' - it's still all Spain, with Morocco unable to create any chances since the start of the game. Diego Costa finds himself with the ball on the wing after a defensive error, and he finds Isco at the far post, who meets the ball with his head!

Spoiler

El Kajoui gets down to tip the ball around the post for a corner kick.

75' - finally, Portugal manage to get the better of the Iranian defence! Guedes sprints clear and turns inside, foxing the last man! He lines up his sights on the goal...

Spoiler

...and curls the ball around the keeper towards the far post...

Spoiler

...but it's well wide. A poor finish from a rare chance. Portugal's World Cup may only have fifteen minutes 'til expiry.

77' - suddenly, Iran are clear again, with Dejagah sending a long ball through for Ansarifard to run on to. He sprints past the defenders, and unleashes a soaring shot from the edge of the box! It's past the flapping Rui Patricio, and flying towards the top corner!

Spoiler

Off the bar again! With nobody close enough to follow up, Portugal regain possession.

82' - Portugal need a goal, but it's Iran piling on the pressure. Jahanbakhsh walks the ball right up to the six yard box unchallenged, and whips the ball at the goal through a small crowd of defenders!

Spoiler

Rui Patricio leaps to block from point-blank range, but the ball sails across the goal to the players at the far post!

Spoiler

Dejagah heads towards the gaping net!

Spoiler

...but his marker does enough to put him off; the ball crosses the goal-line on the wrong side of the upright. Desperate times for Portugal, really riding their luck.

90' - Not a single shot on goal for twenty minutes in Kaliningrad. With the seconds running out, Spain manage to carve out a decent chance, when Asensio finds Thiago in the box surrounded by defenders. He manages to fire off a shot!

Spoiler

...which cannons back off the keeper's legs, and is cleared.

Sergio Busquets picks up a yellow card for an infraction during the build-up.

...and that's that.

Spoiler

All over in Kaliningrad. A very easy, albeit dour victory for Spain, which sees them top the group, and they'll take on Egypt in the next round.

Portugal can barely muster a shooting opportunity in the second half against Iran, so it's the Islamic Republic who deservedly progress to the second round, where Uruguay await.

Final Scores:

Iran 0 Portugal 0
Spain 1 Morocco 0

Match 37: Australia v Peru
Match 38: Denmark v France

Australia are going home already; a draw against them will see Peru safely through. Denmark only need a draw too, while a win would see France qualify, although a draw would be enough if Peru lose. Let battle commence...

Spoiler

5' - Australia go forward from the off. The ball is chipped into the penalty area, and Mabbout meets it with his head near the penalty spot...

Spoiler

...and it's in! 1-0 Australia! Mabbout's header loops over the keeper and drops into the net in the tiny gap between his hand and the crossbar!

Poor start from Peru, and they're out of the top two as things stand.

Spoiler

11' - the Danes have seen some action in attack, but France are pushing up now. Matuidi picks up the ball on the wing and lays across an inviting cross for Mbappe in space! He leaps and send the ball towards goal!

Spoiler

It shaves the post and goes wide! Larsen's late challenge was enough to put the Frenchman off!

Spoiler

22' - an even game at the Luzhniki, with both defences coping well, until a chip into the area finds Matuidi running into the box unmarked! He skelps the ball across towards the far post!

Spoiler

GOAL! 1-0 France! The ball flies into the top corner past Schmeichel's despairing dive!

Dangerous times for Denmark; a Peru equaliser would knock them out!

Spoiler

40' - Denmark have been trying to penetrate the French defence, but openings have been few and far between.

Schmeichel passes the ball out to Christensen at the back...oh, a terrible mistake, he's caught in possession by Griezmann! He's through unchallenged on the keeper, and must score!

Spoiler

No, he's centred the ball to Olivier Giroud, who has an empty net! 2-0 France, and Denmark in all sorts of trouble now! They're dead level with Peru in every way!

Spoiler

45' - deep into injury time and the French are on the match again, forcing the Danish defence back en masse. Griezmann pushes them back into the area and tries a shot!

Spoiler

Kaspar Schmeichel dives to his left and tips the ball around the post! He's furious with his defenders for not making the challenge!

From the corner, the French pass the ball around the edge of the box, looking for an opening. Finally they feed the ball through to Greizmann, who shoots from twelve yards!

Spoiler

Oh, it's well wide of the near post, and he holds his head in despair. A let off for beleaguered Denmark.

Spoiler

Half-time in both matches, and there's been a lot of back-and-forth between Peru and Australia; a pretty even game, but both sides have been quite secure at the back. Denmark are starting to unravel against France, but both they and Peru are currently a goal away from qualification.

Half Time Scores

Australia 1 Peru 0
Denmark 0 France 2

The second half begins...

Spoiler

54' - Denmark are searching for a goal, but still can't cause the French any problems. France take the opportunity to hit them on the counter, with Matuidi, then Greizmann bringing the ball forward. The ball's cut back to Pogba in the area, who takes a shot!

Spoiler

He's hit the post! The ball comes directly back into the danger area!

Spoiler

...and is frantically cleared by the defence. Denmark living on the edge.

Spoiler

Meanwhile, Peru have been trying to push for an equaliser, but no joy so far. It's Australia's time to go forward, though, with a long ball finding Leckie on the wing. He runs into the area and finds Nabbout totally unmarked by the penalty spot!

Spoiler

...who sidefoots home past the keeper! 2-0 Australia, and a lifeline for Denmark, who step above Peru into second!

Spoiler

68' - still a very even game in Sochi, but Peru just can't force a serious chance out of Australia, and are leaving space at the back. A quick counter finds Tom Rogic, whose marker slips and leaves him clean through on goal!

Spoiler

He underestimates the time he has and shoots early from the edge of the box - the ball flies well wide of the goal, and he sinks to the floor in disgust.

Spoiler

76' - still no real threat from Denmark, with the French happy to sit back and soak up their attacks before they cause any trouble.

Suddenly they're on the front foot, passing the ball around with ease and advancing past the Danes. The ball finds it's way to Giroud in the area, who foxes the final defenders by squaring the ball for Dembele!

Spoiler

An easy tap-in! 3-0 France, and it's all-square between Denmark and Peru again! Denmark in free-fall now, and Peru lacking the creativity to break the Aussies down.

Full time in both games...

Spoiler

...and neither Peru nor Denmark can make a serious mark on their opponents in the final fifteen minutes. Straightforward victories for both of their opponents, with France finishing top of the group.

Final Scores

Australia 2 Peru 0
Denmark 0 France 3

Neither side look like Second Round material, but one must progress, and they're level on points, goal difference, goals scored, all of the above in the game they played against each other, and Fair Play points (1 yellow card each). So, we're on to drawing of lots

I'd do a little video of me drawing lots, but nobody cares and I can't be arsed, so you'll have to take my word for it - I'm currently tossing a coin. Heads Denmark, tails Peru, based on their relative position on our planet, Mother Earth, gawd bless 'er.

Drum roll...

Spoiler

Tails; Peru go through. Denmark - GIRUY.

Group D

Match 39: Nigeria v Argentina
Match 40: Iceland v Croatia

One team from each match will qualify for the Second Round. Nigeria need to win by two goals to go through - anything less than that and the place goes to Argentina. A draw will be enough for Iceland, but a Croatia win would see them through instead.

Time for kick off...

Spoiler

10' - Croatia have the first proper attack, with Rebic attempting a cross from the right wing, which deflects off a defender into the path of Mandzukic at the far post!

Spoiler

Oh, but Saevarsson leaps with him, and it's just enough to put him off! The ball ends up in the side netting!

14' - end-to-end so far in Saint Petersburg, with Lionel Messi looking up for the challenge today. Onyinye Ndidi hits the frustration button early and scythes him down from behind near the centre circle, for no good reason, so it's a yellow card for him.

Messi takes the free-kick himself, with his teammates working the ball back to him immediately. He strikes at goal from the edge of the area!

Spoiler

Ooft - the keeper's well beaten, but the ball soars about a foot above the bar. Early warning for the Africans.

16' - Modric plays in a long free-kick from the centre circle; there's a crowd of players in the Iceland box, but it's Rakitic who gets his head to it, and angles the ball over the keeper!

Spoiler

An agile dive backwards from Halldorsson sees the ball safely over the crossbar! Good work from the keeper.

The corner is easily cleared by the Icelanders.

22' - Nigeria casually play the ball across the back, before left-back Idowu notices a load of space down his side of the pitch, and runs into it. He finds Musa with a forward pass, and he's sprung the defence! He's through on the keeper!

Spoiler

...before being shepherded wide by the chasing defence.

Oh, but he's cut the ball back for Etebo, who rifles the ball into the roof of the net! 1-0 Nigeria against the run of play! Sloppy by Argentina, and now they know how dangerous Nigeria can be!

Spoiler

26' - Croatia still on top, but still reduced to attempting shots from range. Mandzukic tries to curl one around the keeper from the edge of the box...

Spoiler

Ooh, not far off, but it passes wide of the post. Iceland still with the edge.

27' - Argentina have learned nothing, being robbed of possession by Nigeria straight from kick-off, and heading towards the opposition goal with purpose. Iheanacho picks up the ball on the edge of the box and manages to turn the two defenders around him! He's through on the keeper!

Spoiler

Oh, his sidefoot shot is the perfect height for Caballero, who pushes the ball out for a corner.

Iheanacho floats the ball across...Indidi meets it with his head!

Spoiler

...but the ball flies well high and wide. Nigeria looking dangerous now.

35' - No attacking threat from Iceland thus far, but they're just about keeping the Croats at bay. Modric seeks to change that by playing a one-two with Mandzukic on the edge of the box - it's taken him past the defence, with only space between him and the goal!

Spoiler

Oh, he's tried to play in Rebic, who's man-marked by Magnusson! The attack's quickly dealt with, with the ball returned to the keeper. A mystifying decision from Luka Modric!

39' - it's still all Croatia, spraying the ball around the park and causing Iceland all sorts of headaches. Mandzukic plays the ball through a crowd of Icelandic players and finds Rakitic running into the box, who fires a glorious screamer at the far corner!

Spoiler

It's pinged off the top of the post! When the ball comes down, it's picked up by Rebic on the wing, who plays in Vrsaljko, slaloming his way around the defence. He cracks in a shot from an angle!

Spoiler

Oh, it's well wide. Croatia getting closer and closer to breaking down the stubborn Iceland back line.

45' - Argentina keep making daft errors in defence, but they've managed to get away with it so far, although it's been Nigeria with all the chances since the goal.

With seconds remaining on the clock, the Argies manage to push Nigeria back enough to launch an attack of their own, passing the ball around on the edge of the box until an opportunity presents. Meza tries to slot the ball through to Messi, who shoots from nine yards!

Spoiler

It's past the near post, and he still can't hit the target. Poor finish for a chance to bring Argentina back from the edge. It's also the final kick of the first half.

Croatia finish the first half with a fast break from a rare Icelandic attack, Mandzukic speeding past the defence, before cutting back in an leaving his marker for dead. The goal's at his mercy!

Spoiler

He plays a short pass to Modric, in a more central position, and a few yards out! Surely Croatia will finally take the lead?

Spoiler

His toe-poke at the goal is saved the the goalie's foot and sliced clear! What a let-off for Iceland!

Argentina have made a series of daft errors in the latter part of the first half, and are lucky that Nigeria haven't found the second goal that would put them through. It's Croatia's to lose in the other game, with Iceland unable to muster a single proper attack. They need to take their chances, however, as Iceland will be perfectly happy with the scoreline.

Half Time Scores

Nigeria 1 Argentina 0
Iceland 0 Croatia 0

The second half begins...

Spoiler

50' - Croatia start the second half the way they mean to carry on, picking up the ball and pushing men forward...but a loose pass from Modric sees the ball passed through for Bodvarsson to run on to, and he's clear of Croatia's defence! Their first proper chance of the game! He holds off his marker and strikes the ball from the edge of the box!

Spoiler

It's a poor shot, though, and Subasic throws up his hands to block the shot. It's a bit slapdash, but the defence eventually get the ball to safety.

53' - Nigeria are still the main attacking force, with Argentina seemingly happy to sit back and wait. A passing move finds Iheanacho on the edge of the box, who strikes at the top corner!

Spoiler

Ooh, it's not far off. Another let off for Argentina, who are really living on their nerves at the moment.

55' - Nigeria attack again, with a long through ball picking out Etebo on the edge of the six yard box. He holds off his marker and shoots!

Spoiler

Caballero gets his body behind it and it goes out for a corner.

75' - Iceland have been much more offensive in this half, although chances have been few for both sides. A poor free-kick sees the Icelanders attack en masse with Bodvarsson striking from inside the area!

Spoiler

Subasic gets down to tip the ball around the post comfortably.

A couple of poor corners come in, before it finally goes out for a Croatia goal kick. They have fifteen minutes left to find the goal they need.

80' - Croatia caught on the counter attack, and the ball's played through for Bodvarsson to run on to, but he's barged off the ball by Lovren; the referee gives a free kick twenty-five yards from the goal.

The keeper places his wall; it looks like Sigurdsson's going to hit this. And he has! Sailing over the wall towards the top corner! Will it come down in time to sneak in?

Spoiler

It kisses the top of the bar on the way over! Iceland so close to surely booking their place in the next round!

81' - Argentina have spent most of the second half trapped in their own half of the pitch, but Nigeria's attacks have gradually tapered off.

Suddenly Ighalo picks up the ball in the centre and runs at Argentina, who stand off. They all seem to be expecting him to lay the ball off, but he keeps going into the area! He turns towards the goal and shoots from ten yards out!

Spoiler

The shot's low and to Caballero's right, and it sneaks under his body into the net! 2-0 Nigeria and Argentina are going out! Dreadful defending by the South Americans!

Spoiler

89' - Argentina pile forward to keep their World Cup alive, but can't create a clear-cut chance. Nigeria break out of defence with a long, long crossfield ball to Idowu, who hares down the wing and puts in a cross, but there's nobody to pick it up.

Moses is first to the ball on the far wing, and now he has support! He chips it in, and Musa's head is the first to the ball!

Spoiler

The header is straight at Caballero, who catches gratefully and sends the ball upfield quickly.

And it's all over...

Spoiler

...with neither side able to make any further dent in their opponents. Argentina's terrible defending has seen them undone, losing out in a game they seemed happy to sit back in. Iceland just about managed to keep Croatia at bay in the first half, with the threat petering out in the second. Iceland go through in first place, and will take part in an unlikely Second Round game against Peru. Nigeria will have to plot their way around the French side that just demolished Denmark. Croatia finish bottom despite being unbeaten.

Final Scores

Nigeria 2 Argentina 0
Iceland 0 Croatia 0

Match 41: Mexico v Sweden
Match 42: South Korea v Germany

Mexico only require a draw to progress, but could still go through even if they lose. The Swedes require a win, with a high-scoring draw only being sufficient if the other game ends in a low-scoring draw. South Korea have to win, and even then might need a goal difference swing if Sweden beat Mexico; a win will put the Germans through, but a draw will be enough if Sweden lose, or draw with few goals.

Into the thunderdome...

Spoiler

7' - Sweden have the first dangerous attack, with Forsberg sprinting down the wing, past the Mexican defence, on to a through ball. He dummies a cross before cutting inside and setting the ball up for Berg in a central position!

Spoiler

He skies it far over the bar! A terrible finish to a terrific chance!

Spoiler

13' - after a period of Swedish domination, Mexico match forward with a quick passing move. The Swedes have enough time to get back in numbers and crowd out Lozano on the far edge of the box. With no other option, he takes a shot at goal!

Spoiler

The ball flies well wide of the near post, and Sweden's goal remains safe.

16' - South Korea have coped well with the German pressure so far, with the German defence calmly mopping up the occasional counter attack.

The first real chance comes to Germany, with Mueller finding enough space on the wing to float the ball over to Draxler, a lonely figure in the box. He leaps, and manages to outjump his marker!

Spoiler

...but his header is straight at the keeper, who clutches it gratefully to his chest.

He plays the ball out, but it comes back immediately, with Werner storming through into the box. He shoots before the defence can close him down!

Spoiler

Too close to Cho Hyun Woo - he leaps and catches the shot without having to work.

21' - another chance for Germany; Werner charges forward again and fires in another shot from just inside the box...

Spoiler

...but it whizzes wide to the keeper's left by inches. One of these is bound to fly in at some point.

34' - It's end to end stuff in Ekaterinburg, but the defences are on top, with no serious chances for either side.

A long forward pass finally unlocks the Mexican defence, with Claesson centring the ball to Berg just outside the box. He plays the ball past the back line for Toivonen to run on to; he leans back and tries to curl the ball in at the far post!

Spoiler

It's about a foot wide; the keeper did enough to narrow the angle.

45' - a last chance for Sweden before the break; Claesson is played through on goal with a diagonal pass and gets off a shot before he can be closed down!

Spoiler

The keeper blocks it with his body and his defence picks it up from a wide position.

Few chances in either game so far; Sweden have had the best of it against Mexico, but have to make the most of the few attempts they're having. South Korea have coped well with Germany so far, but will need to create more in the second half; at present, they haven't had a single shot on goal.

Half Time Scores

Mexico 0 Sweden 0
South Korea 0 Germany 0

45 minutes to go...

Spoiler

48' - Sweden pick up a free-kick from thirty yards out due to some manhandling. Forsberg seems like he's going to strike it at goal; quite ambitious from this range.

The ball is up and over the wall...dipping down towards the base of the far post!

Spoiler

The keeper has plenty of time to see it coming, and safely pushes it away from his goal.

68' - Still very much the same in Kazan, with Germany monopolising the possession, but unable to break the Koreans down.

Suddenly, the Koreans break, with a long ball from defence nodded down for the midfield, who stream forward. Kim Shin Wook picks up the ball on the right wing and puts in a long cross for Son Heung Min to run on to!

Spoiler

His header is too weak to cause problems, and Neuer helps the ball out for a corner, which is comfortably dealt with.

73' - Sweden trying to push forward in Ekaterinburg, but Mexico defending well, and looking dangerous on the counter. No notable chances until Corona manages to get past a tiring Lustig to squeeze in a shot from an angle...

Spoiler

...straight at the keeper, who turns it wide. The corner's weak, and cleared easily.

85' - time running out for Korea, but their rare runs forward cause few problems. From one, the Germans take advantage of the extra space and break quickly, Thomas Mueller picking up the ball and making for goal from forty yards. He reaches the area and shoots!

Spoiler

It's a weak shot from tired legs, and the keeper plucks it from the air easily. Germany still going through, but that would have sealed it.

90' - Sweden struggling to create the chance they need to continue in the tournament. After some scrambling about in their own defence, they push forward for a final chance in injury time. The penalty area's packed as players try to find space for a shot. Finally, Berg sees a chink of light and strikes it!

Spoiler

...straight at the keeper, who clutches it to his chest.

Meanwhile, South Korea have been on the front foot against Germany, as time slips away for them. Finally an opportunity presents itself - Son Heung Min digs out a curling cross to the far post, and Go Yo Han is running in!

Spoiler

He lashes it towards goal...but the angle is too narrow, and Neuer tips it easily around the post.

Nothing comes of the corner, but South Korea keep trying as the referee is about to blow. The ball comes back into the area, and Kim Shin Wook manages to divert the ball to Son Heung Min, unmarked on the penalty spot. A gilt-edged chance!

Spoiler

Oh, he doesn't take the shot, and is crowded out by the defence! A terrible decision by the player!

Finally, it comes to an end...

Spoiler

Germany and Mexico successfully close out their matches, with the goalless draws enough to see them both through. Germany will likely face Brazil in the Second Round, while it's probably Serbia or Switzerland for the Mexicans.

Final Scores

Mexico 0 Sweden 0
South Korea 0 Germany 0

Match 43: Switzerland v Costa Rica
Match 44: Serbia v Brazil

A draw will see Brazil through to the next round; Serbia need to better the result of whichever team wins the other game. The Swiss are only behind the Serbs on goals scored, so need a swing in that area if they both win/draw/lose. Costa Rica are hoping Brazil win, while they beat the Swiss with a +2 goal swing over Serbia. So, nice and straightforward.

Wheeeeeeeep...

Spoiler

8' - The Swiss get the first chance of the game, winning a free-kick about forty yards from the goal. Rodriguez delivers a long ball into the box...and Xhaka gets his head onto it...

The ball flies towards the keeper's left...he dives...

Spoiler

...and pushes the ball away at full stretch! His defenders deal with the loose ball.

12' - the Swiss pass the ball across the edge of the Costa Rican box...Seferovic sees his chance and pokes the ball at the goal!

Spoiler

...but it's straight at Navas, and he catches it easily.

14' - Brazil are out of the traps early, looking for the opening goal, but Serbia cope pretty well in the opening quarter of an hour. Paulinho takes the first dangerous shot after finding a yard of space for himself inside the box, his swipe sending the ball flying at the keeper...

Spoiler

...but Stojkovic stretches to his left and tips it around the post. The corner peters out and ends up back with the keeper.

18' - Serbia attempt to push Brazil back, but are hit on the counter! Coutinho wins the ball in the middle third and slips a through pass to Willian, who holds his markers off long enough to slide the ball into the area for Jesus to run on to. He lashes the ball past the keeper!

Spoiler

GOAL! Stojkovic is beaten all ends up, and the ball rockets into the far side of the net! 1-0 Brazil, and Serbia will almost certainly need a goal now! An uphill struggle ahead!

Spoiler

28' - Brazil aren't finished yet, and keep pushing for a second. Suddenly, the break is on for Serbia, with Mitrovic leading the charge! A quick exchange of passes and the ball is back with him inside the box - he shoots, and the ball deflects off Silva's shin!

Spoiler

...straight at Allison in goal; he comfortably plucks it from the air.

40' - both defences do a solid job of keeping the other side at bay, but Brazil have more flair at their disposal. They thread the ball around Serbia's penalty area, looking for an opportunity to open up, and it's Neymar who finds it, lashing the ball at Stojkovic's exposed goal!

Spoiler

It cannons back off the bar and spins out for a throw! It's not looking good for the Serbs so far!

Serbia manage to keep Brazil at bay until half-time, and will be relieved to go in only one behind; it'll take a touch of genius to get them back into the match in the second half. Over in Nizhny Novgorod, it's been a dour encounter with neither side looking remotely likely to get a goal. Costa Rica will need to up their game, but the Swiss look quite comfortable as things stand.

Half Time Scores

Switzerland 0 Costa Rica 0
Serbia 0 Brazil 1

The Titans rise from their slumber...

Spoiler

56' - no danger from Serbia yet, but Brazil continue to patiently stalk their opponents' goal from the edge of the box. Willian finally gets a sight of goal and strikes!

Spoiler

It hits Coutinho and goes over! But he was offside anyway; Serbia safe for now.

60' - Still nothing much doing in Nizhny Novgorod, with neither defence in any danger. From out of nowhere, Shaqiri finds himself with space on the wing, and sends over a high ball. Borges meets it and tries to clear, but it falls for Xhaka running into the box! He strikes!

Spoiler

It's a daisycutter with no power, right at the keeper's feet. He falls on it with gusto.

75' - we could do with a goal to liven things up, and it could be Switzerland who deliver it. A quick through-pass in the middle of the park sees Embolo through past Costa Rica's defence, and with enough pace that he won't be caught! he arrives in the area and unleashes a stoater across the keeper!

Spoiler

The top of the post, he couldn't have been closer! The defence deal with the rebound. Surely that would have sealed Switzerland's place in the next round.

83' - Costa Rica are leaving it late to make it through, but Urena wins lofted ball forward and finds himself in enough space to put in a decent shot!

Spoiler

Sommer's tested for the first time, and tips the ball around his righthand post. Guzman picks up a yellow card for a diving lunge in the lead-up, his second of the tournament. The corner is easily cleared.

85' - Serbia just cannot create anything close to a chance, and Brazil are winning this in second gear. Just as Brazil appear to be winding up for another goal, the Serbs break with a couple of long balls, and Velkovic is behind the defence, through on goal! The best chance of the match! He cuts in to the box and sidefoots towards the goal!

Spoiler

A terrible finish! The ball is mis-hit and flies yards past the goal; that might have been Serbia's big chance. Relief for the Swiss.

No more; we're done.

Spoiler

Two more boring games you'll struggle to see. Serbia never look close to seriously hurting Brazil, who kick back at 1-0 and wait for the Second Round. Switzerland and Costa Rica are completely unadventurous in their game, which is particularly mystifying with the latter, who drop out without even a whimper. A bore draw's enough to put the Swiss through as a distant second to Brazil, who don't look like they're even trying yet.

Final Scores

Switzerland 0 Costa Rica 0
Serbia 0 Brazil 1

One goal in the past five games. Jesus wept.

Match 45: Senegal v Colombia
Match 46: Japan v Poland

Senegal will qualify with anything better than a two-goal defeat, and even then Poland would need to win for them to go out. That two-goal win would put Colombia through for sure, but a draw could be enough if Japan win. The Japanese need a three-goal victory to have a chance, while the Poles need to equal or better Colombia's result, with a little leeway on the goal difference. Got all that? Good.

...and they're off!

Spoiler

4' - Japan with the first attack, but it's closed down comfortably by the Polish defence.

Oh, but Glik's caught in possession on the edge of his box! Osako robs him and fires at goal!

Spoiler

1-0 Japan! Tremendous shot into the top corner from the Japanese! A terrible start for Poland, but the comeback suddenly seems more possible for Japan!

Spoiler

27' - Japan are very much in control, and seem determined to make a decent fist of this.

The next chance is Poland's, however, as a slack pass out from defence goes to Milik, who plays the ball through Japan's defence for Lewandowski, through on goal with a chance to shoot!

Spoiler

Terrible finish! He draws the ball back across the goal and it dribbles well wide. A missed opportunity to put the Poles back into second place in the group.

30' - Poland are more up for this now. Krychowiak puts through a superb pass across Japan's back line, and Milik runs on to it. He's hit it first time, from the edge of the box!

Spoiler

Bang! It comes back off the cross bar, straight to the defence. So close to an equaliser.

Japan on the counter-attack! Inui scurries up the left wing and plays a through ball for Osako! He's behind the defence with only the keeper to beat!

Spoiler

2-0 Japan! The shot goes straight through Szczesny, and Japan are buzzing now! One more goal and Senegal can put them through! So cruel on Poland, who are in big trouble now.

Spoiler

42' - Japan push for a third, but Poland need goals of their own! Lewandowski picks up the ball on the edge of the box and makes for goal!

Spoiler

He tries to curl it around the keeper...but Kawashima's equal to it, and pushes the ball back out across the goal! Grosicki's at the far post!

Spoiler

...but his header is comfortably caught by the keeper. Japan hang on!

45' - Grosicki picks up the ball on the wing; a quick one-two with Rybus and he has a mile of space to get in a cross! He chips to the near post, and Lewandowski gets his head to it!

Spoiler

His attempt to get the ball over the keeper is foiled by Kawashima's fingertips; he tips the ball wide for a corner.

The defence clear, but it comes back immediately - Poland giving it their best to get a goal back before the break. They pass the ball around the box, until Blaszcykowski finally cuts in and shoots!

Spoiler

It's a weak shot, and the keeper gathers comfortably. Japan living on the edge, but getting away with it.

A superb, surprising first 45 from Japan, getting themselves into touching distance of the last 16. Poland still have the upper hand, but both are relying on a Senegal goal, which seems unlikely, as both sides in the other game have been perfectly content to pass the ball around without causing any problems whatsoever. Senegal are currently safe as houses, but a goal from them would put the cat among the pigeons.

Half Time Scores

Japan 2 Poland 0
Senegal 0 Colombia 0

More conviction!

Spoiler

52' - Finally, some action in Samara! Senegal probe forward with Mane, and Kouyate is curiously free in the box! The keeper rushes out as he shoots!

Spoiler

Off the outside of the post and behind! Colombia breathe a sigh of relief! What a chance!

54' - Senegal suddenly seem more awake; the ball comes forward again, with Niang making a run at the defence. He decides to take a shot from twenty yards!

Spoiler

He lashes it high and wide to the keeper's right. Warning signals for Colombia.

59' - Senegal with a chance again; Niang terrifying Colombia's defence with his forward runs. He passes to Mane in the box, who gets his foot to it and directs towards goal!

Spoiler

It's weak, and Ospina falls onto it as it bobbles towards him.

68' - both sides are awake in Samara now, although Colombia are yet to create a decent chance. Cuadrado has a strike from outside the box, but it deflects off Mane into the path of Quintero in the box! He hits it on the half volley!

Spoiler

In off the bar! 1-0 Colombia, and surely that puts them through to the Second Round! The only chance they've had all match, and now they're one goal away from topping the group! Japan are on their way out, and the Poles need to find three goals from somewhere in the last twenty minutes!

Spoiler

70' - It's been nervy and close in Volgograd, and Japan are looking for the third goal that could still see them qualify. Osako picks up the ball on the edge of the box and plays it through for Kagawa, with the goal in his sights!

Spoiler

Szczesny gets his body behind the shot and pushes the ball wide for the corner.

It's fired across to the near post, and Okazaki gets there ahead of his marker!

Spoiler

His header is straight at Grosicki who clears with ease.

75' - All action in Samara now, as Colombia finally realise the value of winning. It's Senegal who hit them on the break, however, with a long diagonal ball picking out Mane on the right wing. He cuts into the area and strikes!

Spoiler

The angle's too narrow, and Ospina pushes the ball around the post. The keeper flaps at the corner, but his defence clear with ease.

90' - injury time, and Colombia push up for the group-winning second goal. Bacca, across the area to Quintero, who finds Izquierdo running into the box. He shoots from the edge, before the defence can reach him!

Spoiler

It's well wide of the near post. That might be it for Colombia.

Farewell to arms...

Spoiler

...and Poland pay the price for a poor performance, despite going into the final game with everything on their side. Japan fall just short of their three-goal victory, but can take comfort that they were going out anyway. Senegal hold on to top the group, while Colombia head through with form on their side.

Final Scores

Senegal 0 Colombia 1
Japan 2 Poland 0

Match 47: England v Belgium
Match 48: Panama v Tunisia

Belgium are through; technically, they can still finish second, but it would require a huge goal difference swing of +8 between them losing to England and Panama winning. Panama are guaranteed to progress if they beat Tunisia, but a draw would do if Belgium
draw or win. England must win and hope Panama don't; Tunisia must win too and, if they and England are both victorious, Tunisia will need to win by a goal (or possibly two) more. Thank God it's knockout from here on.

God Save our Gracious Queen...

Spoiler

5' - England with lots of possession, passing the ball around well. Sterling picks the ball up on the wing and sells Carrasco a dummy; he passes to Trippier inside the box, who toe-pokes towards the goal...

Spoiler

Saved by Courtois! But he can only palm it away across the goalmouth...

Spoiler

...and it's finished by Dele Alli! 1-0 England, and a lovely move puts the English ahead! Belgium left flat-footed at the back!

Spoiler

6' - Tunisia get the first chance in Saransk; Khazri turns his man and approaches the area, with Ben Youssef making a run. The ball is played in to him, and he shoots from ten yards!

Spoiler

He slices it well wide at the far post! Awful finishing; will they get a better chance, in a match they need to win?

16' - Belgium push back in search of an equaliser, stroking the ball around on the edge of England's box. Henderson's robbed in the centre and the ball finds its way to Hazard, who attempts to place it past Pickford in the England goal!

Spoiler

It's wide by a couple of feet; Hazard's clearly disappointed by that one.

The ball took a slight deflection on the way out; corner to Belgium. When the ball's delivered into the box, there's a scramble around the penalty spot, but Mertens finally cracks it towards the goal!

Spoiler

And it's deflected high and wide for another corner! Another scramble when the ball comes in, but the defence finally manage to get it away and relieve the pressure.

21' - England on the counter-attack, and Ashley Young is hareing away down the left wing. Plenty of time to get the ball into the area, and Raheem Sterling is waiting!

Spoiler

GOAL! He fires the ball across Courtois into the far side of the goal! 2-0 to England, and they're doing everything they can to stay ahead of Panama and Tunisia!

Spoiler

24' - Belgium go forward from kick-off, looking to get back into the game. The ball's pushed over to Hazard on the right wing, who puts in a cross...Lukaku jumps...

Spoiler

...and scores with a tremendous bicycle kick! 2-1 England now, and Belgium are right back in it! Good news for Tunisia!

Spoiler

29' - England seek to restore their two-goal advantage, piling forward into the box. A Trippier cross is cut out by Meunier, but it runs free in the box, to be picked up by Henderson! He cuts inside and has a wonderful chance!

Spoiler

Oh, he's sliced it well wide of the far post! His head's in his hands, what a miss! Belgium are all over the place in defence.

33' - Belgium try to push forward again, but they're very vulnerable to the counter-attack. England stream forward across the halfway line with Trippier, and his long cross finds Alli on the far side of the penalty area...he hits it on the volley with his instep...

Spoiler

...straight into Courtois' hands. bit of a relief for the Belgians.

35' - in Saransk, Panama have been imposing themselves more, and are starting to look dangerous. They move forward into the area with Godov, who holds the ball up, before making a short pass into the path of Gomez!

Spoiler

Ooh, his shot flies past the near post, and Tunisia breathe a sigh of relief.

36' - Courtois launches the ball out, but it comes straight back again, England stroking the ball around with ease. Trippier receives it in the box, cutting the ball inside for Kane, who sets it up for Lingard!

Spoiler

3-1 England! An easy finish, the keeper could do nothing about it! England taking Belgium apart now!

Spoiler

39' - England get the ball back from kick-off and push up again! On the edge of the box, it's Sterling, to Kane, to Dele Alli!

Spoiler

His shot is just wide, but was covered by Courtois anyway. England just firing at will; Belgium will be delighted when the half-time whistle blows.

40' - Belgium can't even keep possession of the ball; a poor goal kick from Courtois comes to Sterling who slips the ball to Kane, beating the offside trap! Through on goal, he must score!

Spoiler

4-1 England, and complete embarrassment for Belgium! England are holding up their end, but can Tunisia get back into the game in Saransk?

Spoiler

42' - Panama moving forward again; a leisurely one-two between Gomez and Godov, before the latter decides to take a strike from twenty yards...

Spoiler

Top corner! The ball zooms across Ben Mustapha's goal and leaves him with no chance! Panama go 1-0 up, and it's disaster for England unless Tunisia can recover!

Spoiler

45' - England attack again, with Kane putting a crossfield ball over to Young, who delivers it in to Lingard, fighting off his marker!

Spoiler

Oh, he's pulled it wide! The only thing stopping England scoring at the moment is their own poor aim. Time to throw in the towel.

Meanwhile in Saransk, Tunisia pick up a free-kick inside the centre circle, and decide to launch it into the penalty area. Ben Youssef is up for it...

Spoiler

...but his header bounces harmlessly to the keeper.

England producing the best attacking display of the tournement so far, or possibly Belgium producing the worst defensive display; either way, the former are running away with the game. It'll all be for naught if Panama can hold on against the Tunisians though; Tunisia are all but out now, needing an avalanche of goals to catch up to England.

Half Time Scores

England 4 Belgium 1
Panama 1 Tunisia 0

Long Live our Noble Queen...

Spoiler

54' - Belgium try to impose themselves onto the second half, but it doesn't take long before the familiar pattern from the first re-emerges. Eric Dier passes forward to Trippier, who finds Kane free in the area!

Spoiler

He slides the ball under Courtois' left side! 5-1 England! Not only England's best ever World Cup win, but now Belgium's worst defeat too.

Spoiler

56' - England on the march again; Eric Dier chips the ball over the defence, and Sterling runs through onto the end of it! Unchallenged, he whips a volley at goal!

Spoiler

Oh, he had so much time, but skies it high over the bar. It doesn't matter now, but that was wasteful.

63' - England again...Dele Alli passes to James Vardy in the area, who cuts inside a beleagured Vertonghen, and shoots!

Spoiler

6-1 England! A delicate chip around the keeper, and it only gets worse from here. England could genuinely hit double figures at this rate.

Spoiler

66' - Panama have been solid and in control against Tunisia without creating anything too dangerous, until Barcenas manages to find Torres in the area with pass/cross - he slides in and gets a foot on the end of it!

Spoiler

It beats the keeper, but hits the bar! Tunisia walk the rebound out of defence, and the chance is gone.

70' - England through again at Kaliningrad, Dele Alli sending Vardy through on the keeper...

Spoiler

...but he's shoveled it straight into Courtois' hands. England getting bored of scoring?

77' - Belgium on a rare raid upfield...Lukaku picks up the ball twenty yards out and decides to hit it!

Spoiler

Pickford has plenty of time to get across and deflect the ball out for a corner, which is very poor when it comes in. Belgium look like they've had enough.

79' - Bronn caught in possession for Tunisia! Can Diaz finish the game off for Panama?

Spoiler

He clips over Ben Mustapha...but he manages to tip the ball over the bar!

The corner hits the first defender, and is cleared.

90' - Still no sign of a comeback from Tunisia as we approach injury time, but Panama have another chance - Cooper gets the ball to Torres on the edge of the box, with just enough time to snap off a shot!

Spoiler

It beats the keeper, and smacks off the post! Nobody's close enough to follow up, and the ball's cleared.

Now Tunisia are on the counter! Khalifa flies down the wing, and Panama are struggling to get back! He swings back a cross to Khazri, who volleys from fifteen yards! Are Panama heading out?

Spoiler

Off the bar and back out! Cooper gets rid of the rebound, and Panama are safe again!

God Save the Queen?

Spoiler

An absolute massacre at Kaliningrad. England essentially become too tired to keep scoring against Belgium; another couple of goals could have improbably lost them their top spot to Panama. Unfortunately for England, their conquerors in the last game march through with a comfortable win against an impotent Tunisia.

Final Scores

England 6 Belgium 1
Panama 1 Tunisia 0

Thank Christ that's finally over; back to the paragraph of blurb and highlights from here on out. That took far too long.

Three quarters of the games gone, and the group stage has finished. The realism seems to have flown out of the window a little, but see what you think for yourself...
