Scotland’s best pitch

Recommended Posts

Why can’t the media give Stirling the credit they are due for having the best playing surface in Scotland?

They almost seem to be an inconvenient afterthought despite the fact they have outperformed everybody else which is incredible given the level of their resource.

The media here are obsessed by the Premiership at times, even when it isn’t the story

Premiership teams are the only relevant teams in Scotland.

Saying Stirling has Scotland's best pitch based on this study is a bit like saying Lawrence Shankland is the best striker in the SPFL because he scored more goals than anyone else.  Stirling were voted as having the best pitch in League 2 according to League 2 players - those same League 2 players did not vote on the other pitches in Scotland.

Actually they would have played on a couple in the cups.

Only roughly 5-10% of the scores will come from cup matches (assuming they're included).  The scores will be dominated by league games, where each player can only vote for pitches at their own level, and only really has their own level as a frame of reference.  What Moussa Dembele thinks is a 5 star pitch is probably a bit different to what Darryl McHardy thinks is a 5 star pitch.

All due credit to the Stirling Albion's groundsman - but is Forthbank not jointly used by Striling Uni ? And the the Universities are awash with money.

Queen Ann might have missed a trick. Should have asked Heriot Watt to pay for Tynecastle's new Hybrid pitch in return for letting HWUFC hold one 5-a-side training session on it in June.

With Motherwell hosting their under 20 games at Stirling it shows that a grass pitch can hold its standard all season.

It would be interesting to know if the under 20 players were also able to vote in this survey each week.

Motherwell played most of our U20s games at Airdrie.

Hamilton's pitch was the worst.

The main point here being that there are probably a few Clubs whose pitch is up for best of the season.  As long as Hamilton are in the top flight their pitch will rightly finish bottom of the pile each and every time. An abomination. Only if a club gets promoted with an ash pitch (joking aside) will that ever change.

Every single time I've seen a team play on that surface it's been a complete "ball physics" lottery. I understand that a good surface costs a lot to create and maintain, but Hamilton's is possibly the worst pitch I have ever seen a professional team play football on.

I am very much of the opinion that the Scottish style of football does not work on "plastic pitches", either enforce grass pitches for all clubs or we need to change the way we play to a more technical tippy tappy manner.

It really wouldn't.

Close season, what's it like!
