City Cup 17-18

Officially speaking the East of Scotland Cup of course.

Berwick and Edinburgh City enter automatically, East Kilbride and LTHV have qualified.

SFs were supposed to be 2 midweeks ago with Final in 2 midweeks time, but poor weather and the permanently moist state of Saughton Enclosure seems to have put paid to that schedule.

LTHV only played their EOS Qualifying Cup SF last Wednesday at 4th attempt, while Berwick and LTHV have been playing most/all midweeks - indeed LTHV are also playing Easter Monday.

It can be and often has been held-over (if you think about it most competitions you qualify for are the next season) - but not so much in recent years.

Most recent occasion was 2014-15's Final involving Berwick + LTHV played on Saturday 10th October 2015.

Before that you have to go back to 2009-10's (Berwick + Gretna on Saturday 5th September 2010) and 2008-09's (Berwick + Whitehill on Tuesday 8th September 2009).

Berwick and EK have decided to fulfil their tie with their U20s this Saturday at K-Park (3pm). Their first-teams are engaged at home to Stirling Albion and away to BSCG respectively.

While it gets the tie played it doesn't do much for the standing of the cup, sadly.

Just going the way others have HJ teams fielding reserves/u20s. At least they are making the effort to get the game out of the way. Any news on the other tie?

Weakened teams have been seen often enough before that's true, but I don't think it's ever been played at the exact same time as a first-team game before. Also it must be almost literally the youth teams as - by definition - at least 18 or 19 first-teamers will be at the first-team's game; whereas in the past the coachingstaff (who will of course also be elsewhere) might have rested a number of players but still fielded a body of first-teamers.

As you say at least the tie is getting played, it's just a shame it couldn't have been played midweek even if that meant fitting it around the reserve league. I like the City Cup tradition: but you worry for it when the EOS Qualifying Cup stage is taken very seriously with decent crowd at the Final, but the Cup proper is becoming a shadow of itself again.

That said it was only held-over due to Berwick and LTHV having lots of postponements. If this season's gets played in March/April as usual it'll be in a better place again.

Haven't seen or heard anything about Edinburgh City v LTHV.

Depends on what happens with the pyramid, but if a WoS is set up then they'd probably want to retain their West of Scotland Cup from the Juniors. Couldn't the EoS just turn the qualifying cup final into an East of Scotland Cup for all tier 6+ teams (or involve the LL clubs from the east as well)?

Of course, aye, the EOS Qualifying Cup could very easily just be rebranded "the East of Scotland Cup" and do away with the City Cup aspect.

It would be sad to see it end entirely, though, and I at least enjoy Berwick having a cup to compete for (however minor).

If you have a bad season this year that problem could be solved:whistle

Last season's final was to be played on Wednesday, but is apparently now being held-over to early July.

This season's tournament will involve Berwick, Edinburgh City, Spartans (who have reached EOS Qualifying Cup Final), plus either Camelon or Bonnyrigg (who meet in outstanding Semi-Final). It's being held-over to next season.

Should we find Cove Rangers get promoted to SPFL2 then next season's tournament would be a straight Final involving Edinburgh City, plus EOS Qualifying Cup winner... If not it would involve Edinburgh City, whichever of Berwick/East Kilbride are playing in SPFL2, and the EOS Qualifying Cup finalists.
