Raith Rovers v East Fife

We are where we are but I feel we are to big for this league out of the 34 years I've supported the rovers 25 or26 years have been spent in the top 2 division's.

Nice spin on it there but "25 or 26 years in the top 2 divisions" is actually 22 in the second tier and only 3 in the top tier. Over that period, Raith have spent 3 times as many seasons in the 3rd tier as they have in the top division. Still not a bad record for a club of Raith's size but there will be players on the park on Sunday who weren't alive the last time Raith were in the Premier. So to try and label Rovers as a 'top 2 divisons' club is fairly disingenuous - more recent history has them solidly as a Championship/League One club.

No point in arguing otherwise, Raith are the biggest club in League One because they get the biggest crowds. Their 'natural position', for all that it matters, is probably mid-to-lower Championship and significantly more likely to visit the seasides than the big time.

Good post.  I've never seen Rovers in the top flight (started going to the occasional game the season after our relegation in the late 90s). Even still, we've had our fair share of highs over the last few years.  I'd say we've definitely got the potential to push on. With that said, regardless of how well we've done over the last years our crowds have always stayed about the 1600 mark or so.  It's frustrating to see other clubs from similar size towns draw in bigger crowds while we fail to bring people in.

Grant, generally what happens when you go up to the Championship is you get rid of players who aren’t going to hack it and you sign some better players. Then you try to not get relegated or go bust, while assembling a decent squad. Then you possibly challenge for the league title or play-offs.

Then, if you’re really unfortunate, your dumb f**k Board of inept blazers hires the likes of Gary F Locke and gets you relegated, ably assisted by a player you’ve loaned to a rival team in the same league, while selling all your decent youth players. Then you crash into the Seaside League and stay there for 2 or 3 seasons.

Elton John wrote a song about it.

What matters just as much as crowds in these situations is how the club is run.

Hamilton are a small club but incredibly well run, hence their Premiership status. You could say the same of a club like Brechin, currently ‘overachieving’ in terms of size.

Crowd wise we are mid-Championship, off the field and commercially we are probably League One level. Hence our occasional periods at a lower level.

Surprising when you see whos at the helm

And they lost £1m to scammers, that doesn't sound well run to me. But fair play to them, they have otherwise been run to a budget that can maintain their Prem status without sinking the club. Many clubs can learn from their experience. Are you watching Livingston? They are due a financial meltdown again.

An East Fife fan, without a hint of irony, saying you can’t use your past glories as gloating points.

Not saying that at all. I'm just saying be accurate about them.
