Could also add Ray Stewart to the mix, an excellent defender for Dundee Utd and West Ham, but at the wrong time, another one who wasn't going to break the Miller-McLiesh partnership!!!
10 caps, 1 goal!!!

Ray Stephen is another one, handpicked by Arsene Wenger to build his Nancy team around and thus his own reputation, was very highly regarded in France and scored more than a goal every three games from central midfield - never got a single cap!!!

The guy would have his own thread on here if he was playing now!!!

Ray Stewart was a right back was he not. Wouldn`t think it was Miler/McLeish who kept him out.

Wiki suggests being sent off in the an Under21 match v England in April 1982 cost him his place in the 82 world cup squad and afterf that incident Stein didn`t pick him again. He was ultimately recalled by Andy Roxburgh.  RayStewartWiki

Agree 10 caps seems paltry given his ability though.

Maybe, I seem to recall him playing in the middle at the back on old MOTDs, maybe he moved there later in his career, but again should have had more caps!!!

But here's one who couldn't break the M&Mc pairing, Allan Evans, European Cup winner with Aston Villa, four caps!!!

Evans`s central defensive partner was also a Scot- Ken McNaught -No caps.

At the time of course it was comonplace for Scots to feature in european finals. Even if we look just at those playing central defence and restrict it to the 80s the following all appeared at CB in a European Final.

Kenny Burns European Cup Final 1980 (and 1979).  20 caps.

Alan Hansen European Cup Final 1981 1984 and 1985  (also 1978) 26 caps.

Allan Evans 1982 European Cup Final. 4 caps.

Ken McNaught 1982 European Cup Final. 0 caps.

Gary Gillespie 1985 European Cup Final (came on as a sub for Mark Lawrenson after 3-4 minutes).  13 caps.

McLeish (77 caps) and Miller (65 caps) in Cup Winners Final in 1983.

Also Paul Hegarty (8 caps), David Narey (35 caps) and John Clark (0 caps) all featured in central defence over the 2-leg 1987 UEFA Cup Final.

Seems like (and is) a very long time ago now, and that`s just looking at the central defenders!

Also worth noting of course that English clubs and thus many Scots players were banned from Europe for a number of years after the 1985 Heysel final.

Heard Craig Levein was a player so surprised he got so few caps.

Levein didn't really come in until 1990, mainly blocked before then by Miller / McLeish. I think in one of his early caps (debut?) we beat Argentina, sans Maradona, 1-0. He then played a fair bit in the early 90s but injuries kicked in and he retired quite early.

His lack of caps has been a topic of conversation at work recently since his daughter started working with us.
I’d never heard about the U21 incident, I just presumed he was second fiddle to McGrain and George Burley.

Being 2nd fiddle to McGrain would have been no shame.  fabulous player.

McGrain in the 70s of course quite often played LB with Sandy Jardine at RB.

Jardine was another superb player

If serious injury counts as unlucky, John Kennedy is the obvious one. Looked a top player for Celtic, kept a blank sheet v Barca in the Nou Camp. ~10 minutes into his Scotland debut, he gets his knee wrecked by some Romanian huddy and never fully recovers. Kennedy would possibly still be playing for Scotland now but for that.

That's a good shout, the guy looked like he was going to be a class act!!!

Another one was Alan McLaren, I know he got 24 caps which is more than most, but I honestly think he could have been at 100 if his career wasn't wrecked by injury, retired at age 27 I think, continual interest from Italian Clubs probably brought on by him marking Baggio out of a game when he was only 20 and the "divine ponytail" was at his peak!!!

Also helped us get to Euro 96 by playing in every qualifier but missed the actual tournament through injury, the guy probably had worse luck than Ryan Gauld!!!

Eric Black, only two caps but I have a theory that Ferguson had a hand in that.

And was never capped while at Aberdeen.

Billy Stark, the only midfielder in the liust of players who scored over 100 Premier division goals,

Hamish McAlpine and Campbell Money, both good solid Scottish goalkeepers.

Hegarty and Narey.  How unfortunate that a superb central defensive partnership were overlooked because of an even better pairing.

Paul Mason should have been called up to the English set up.

All above or course from the 80s and the others from that era that had a good shout for more caps or to have even got one cap.

Peter Weir. Frank McAvennie, Frank McDougall, John Colquhoun,  John Wark, Eamonn Bannon, Paul Sturrock, Ralph Milne, John Brown,

Not sure Bomber was ever good enough, same Cammy Fraser, also I know injuries curtailed his career but Mark MacGhee was better than his 4 caps, certainly a better player than Frank MacDougall

John Wark got 29 caps, probably should/could have had more, but was hardly overlooked, great player!!
