Portugal

Planning on going there in June, to Porto then down to Lisbon then Faro with the possibility of flying out to Sao Miguel in between.

Any good recommendations on places or things to do or see? I know literally next to nothing about Portugal.

Also going to mainland Portugal for the first time in September.  Been to Madeira, which was crap, but going to Alvor which looks good.

Advice from anyone familiar with the area would be appreciated.

Alvor is good.  Any number of decent seafood places near the harbour.  If you can, get along to Praia du Vau (about 20-30 mins walk for a young fit person like myself, next to Portimao), pop into Pai Tomas and tell Tomas you are from Dundee.  Great wee drinking place with spectacular views.

Also if you can get up to Tasca de Petrol in the Monchique mountains (need a car) its well worth it for the food.

Cheers, walking is a big part of our holidays so Praia da Vau will be a definite.  Alvor looks a great base for walking, our hotel is right on the beach/boardwalk.

Can’t be arsed driving on holiday these days.

Know what you mean. You can probably get a bus up the mountains to Tasca de Petrol.  Lagos is quite nice also, you can look over to it from Alvor.  Old bits of Portimao are ok but you are starting to get a bit more into the "Irish bar/egg and chips" scene along there.

ETA Stay off the medronho and on the Monte Velho.

Used to be a great restaurant just up from the railway station in Faro, like a church with loads of benches where you had to squeeze up and just take the meal of the day. You could order off the menu but it was a hassle and much more expensive. Had a look at google maps and my best guess is it's closed or it's called Adega Nova. The back streets of Faro are worth a wander if you get time, could be the only bit of Portuguese life you get to see on the Algarve. Porto's a bit grim apart from by the river and some decorated buildings imo, Lisbon's got a lot more atmosphere. Only really know the Barrio Alto and to be a bit wary by the Railway Station for muggers.

A day-trip from Lisbon to visit Sintra and the Moorish castle there in the morning (early morning in the height of the summer, as it's a fair and often exposed climb to the top), then to Cascais is well worth doing. Get to the Boca de Inferno point beyond Cascais and have a few cheap beers at the nearby outdoor bar while watching the waves smash in from the Atlantic. Both towns are about half an hour from the city and easily reached with public transport.

Taking the regular ferry across the Tagus river from Lisbon to Cacilhas is a good option as well, with the Cristo Rei monument (with lift access fortunately) not far away.

Faro old town is relatively nice if you want a good meal and a bevvy without the stereotypical hordes. Lagos was nice enough also, had a bit of everything, though at night was a bit too "lads/girls on holiday". Lisbon during the day isn't great but at night is fucking tremendous, especially Bairro Alto. Best bet for taking it in is to start at Rossio station and walk up the hill and back the way. Food and drink was immense and the general atmosphere was outstanding.

There are a couple of elevators and loads of trams if you can't be arsed with the climb.

When is Lisbon well worth getting the train to Sintra, as someone has previously mentioned.  Lisbon easy to get about and really nice city.  At luchtime if you are near the station try Beira Gare for something to eat. Really busy and waiters were running trying to serve people. Food was good and reasonably priced.

  • 2 weeks later...

Girlfriend and me are looking at going to Lisbon for a week in the summer. Is there enough to keep us entertained for a week? Doesn't matter if not as we'll be staying somewhere with a pool so can spend the day there instead.

Have now booked a hotel near the Marques De Pombal for a week in July. Looking forward to it.

Have sorted a trip to Sintra for one of our days and a pass for one of the open top buses. Also going to go to the monastery and Benfica's ground.

Any other must do things?
