The Life in the UK Test

Recommended Posts

What if you're Muslim?  Why would you need to know pub opening times?  It should be questions about laws and democracy and values.  The UK is run by absolute belters top to bottom, this is just the latest evidence.

Not all Muslims are teetotal and for that matter not all teetotaller are Muslim

And both Muslims and teetotallers may work in licensed premises

There was a question in there about the age of Big Ben and another about the Bronze Age but you chose one that actually is about life in the UK to get annoyed about

19 on my first attempt. Should probably just fack off back to my home town. Which is, er, Shrewsbury.

Brings back fond memories of me learning to pass my theory test, which amounted to doing an ungodly amount of practice tests on the DVD in the run up to the real thing until I was at the point where I could pass the test reliably.

Not-so-fond memories of failing my first theory attempt by 1 mark, purely by clicking too often on the one hazard perception question which had the two hazards in it.

I get that in the US, whether it works in practice or not, the idea behind such questions is to establish a collective narrative for everyone who lives there, a kind of mission statement about their history and their common goals.

I'm not sure that these  pub quiz questions are in any way useful to doing the same for wannabe Britons.

Just did the test and got 23/24 but the one that I got wrong - the small claims court one - was (a) England-only and (b) one of the few that was of any practical use to the folk that have to do these things. It also seems to make the classic English mistake that the UK has existed for longer than it really has - eg, Bill of Rights question (if my school history memory is right, Scotland has a separate document (Claim of right??) that predated the 1707 union and still applies).

I honestly wasn't aware these tests existed outside of Daily Telegraph editorials and to put it mildly, I'm not sure that making immigrants learn by rote a bunch of disconnected trivia and some subjective opinions thrown in for good measure will prepare them for life here in any way or point to their suitability - it seems like a half-arsed copy of the type of stuff US Immigrants have to go through.

Think the Op is right, it makes for a better pub quiz than a Citizenship Test. Some of the questions are just bizarre for a newcomer to these shores!

Although I do think the pub quiz is one of the greatest parts of our shared culture combining convivial socialising, intellectual endeavour, friendly yet fierce competition, crap puns in team names and an excuse to get tipsy on a school night.

I'm just thinking of all those people in those camps in Calais who are being denied access to the UK because they thought the UK had hosted the Summer Olympics four times.

Stupid idiots.  Should have researched the matter first before attempting the test.
