Talbot vs Pollok

A lot of the Talbot faithful concerned about the fact that Jamie Glasgow was missing with a tweak to his hamstring apparently, albeit he was on the subs bench. So it was that Graham Wilson came back for his first start for a few games, alongside McIlroy up front with Shankland just behind them out on the left wing.

Game started at a fair pace and Talbot were causing Pollok a number of problems with their passing game. Steven Wilson took a clattering in the box and dusted himself off, and scored from the resulting penalty. Ten minutes later there was a mountain for Pollok to climb as Gordon Pope what must be the goal of the season so far at Beechwood with a 25 yard piledriver after a passing movement from right to left across the pitch. A wonderful strike, and a wonderful team goal.

Second half staretd and not surprisingly Pollok came at Talbot and only two excellent saves from Leishman kept them at bay. At the other end Graham Wilson missed after yet another great passing move when it seemed easier to score, and Shankland saw his free kick from outside the box come back off the angle of the post and the bar. Pollok pulled one back with a headed goal from  corner and it looked like squeaky bum time for the Beechwood hordes. Cue Tucker sending on Jamie Glasgow, and two touches later he's bagged a couple and it's 4-1, game over.

Both sides contributed to an excellent game. Pollok looked comfortable on the ball in the middle third of the field where Butch was obviously enjoying his return to Beechwood and he controlled the Pollok midfield admirably. All too often though the final ball was a big one into the box, and with a very confident McPherson and Harvey winning most of them quite easily that's where Pollok let themselves down. Gormley's return showed a shadow of his former self. The quick feet are no longer there, the bringing of other players into the game wasn't there either. He was desperate to score at Beechwood, and it showed when he shot on a number of occasions when there were others better placed. The one time he did get a decent effort in Leishman was it's equal.

Talbot played a blinder today, and Pollok must be thankful Glasgow wasn't on from the start. I've siad it many a time before with them, they splash out on "name" forwards instead of spending money instead on getting their defence right. It's cost them before, and will undoubtedly do so again. Look forward to the next round, and I note that after today's results Talbot have beaten all those through to the last eight in the Junior Cup in recent years, with Rob Roy, Hurlford and Bo'ness at the semi final stages without losing a leg to any of them. Hoping for another home draw.

A quick word for the Pollok fans, who despite allegedly being "fluid" were out in decent numbers today combining to make it the biggest crowd at Beechwood today by a country mile. My good friend Isabel had the crowd at just under 15,000!

The second goal was an absolute beauty. He simply couldn't have hit the ball any better.

Quite a few of the pollok fans shouting on Tony Mac to go. A shame to see as he's a manager I like but Pollok aren't really getting the return on their investment in this squad.  Gormley was also berated by them and to be honest he deserved it for a terrible performance. Clearly a great striker but way short of sharpness and fitness on that showing.

A zero off that figure would be about right my Welsh friend. Have to say, after all the nonsense earlier in the season regarding Talbot as a spent force they are once again coming good at the right time. At the moment no weakness, play as a unit. Quite rightly loads of plaudits for Glasgow and Shanklin, but what about McPherson? Tucker yet again takes a player from the lower divisions, who has to be content with the bench for a season while is being moulded into a tremendous central defender. Also, after years of churlish stuff about Talbot's style they are now a pleasure to watch, ball on the ground great movement and touch. Take a bow Tucker!

Yeah it the same old from some pollok fans couple of defeats and its get the manager out. Second goal was definitely a peach not much we could have done about that . Re your comment about our defence when the starting back 4 are available its not bad today we and 2 starters one not fully fit who went off at half time . Going to talbot is hard enough but when we have 5 players that would normally start not available or injured its a tough ask . Cant take anything away from talbot they did what they had to in beating the team in front of them and moving into the next round of the cup .

I was very impressed by Bot today.

One of our best performances of the season  We've got a settled line up & it's obvious that team confidence is high at the moment.

Don't know how many were there but it was a good turn out.

Terrific game of football. Talbot thoroughly deserved their win. At times the link up play between Graham Wilson, & Mark Shankland, was a joy to watch. Stephen Wilson is starting to play with much more confidence, & belief, he scored from the spot, & put in a good shift, breaking up dangerous Pollok moves, & causing trouble for the visitors defence. I thought he was the best player on the pitch this afternoon. High class performance from the home side, very well done.

Pollok didn’t do too much wrong, Bryan Wharton being unable to come out for the 2nd half was a massive blow for them. David Gormley is getting some stick, but he is a tremendous player. Only a super Andy Leishman save, kept out a net bound effort from him. He looked fitter than last time out, & I fancy him to get a goal next Saturday. A couple of long range Nicky Little efforts also got big Andy’s full attention.

Good day for the Juniors,  well done to everyone concerned.

Haven't seen the long ball game used by Talbot now since the first half vs Kilbrinie, and what a difference. We are seeing superb free flowing football now - and yes, the odd long ball for the naysayers - and it shows. Five wins on the bounce now, seventeen goals scored as well. Great days to be a Bot fan.

Didn't deserve anything today but the comments about the defence are incorrect as when it starts with Evans and Sideserf who were missing today it's a much stronger unit.I liked Gormley in his previous junior days but he is now a stone overweight and slow so needs to sort that out if possible.

As for fans shouting on McInally-he gives his all for Lok but works incredibly hard for the club on every level. If the boo boys think chopping and changing every time we have a bad result or challenge ahead is the right thing to do they might be better employed actually shouting on the team during the game. That would help a lot more.

Pollok are a good outfit and play the game well, keep faith and same players and they will be a contender next year, which makes Talbots performance even more frightening,i wasnt slow to criticise some of Tuckers selections last season but thought his decisions around Glasgow, bringing him on just as Pollok were building at 2-1 was a masterstroke. And fair play to the away support, better than i predicted maybe 100 to 150 in an overall crowd, say 1500.A home draw next will see us into the two legged semi finals and possibly restore the famous trophy to its spiritual home,Auchinleck.

Spent force? The prevailing opinion as regards last season was weakest (for want of a better word) performing Talbot team for several years , gave some bot faithfull the hump but merely highlighted the incredible standard set by themselves!

That was true last season, but earlier this season around the time Pettigrew left there was a posse who were predicting Talbot in decline. Talbot normally have an indifferent Autumn but normally come good when the business needs doing in the Spring. Nothing won yet, but this Talbot side look the dogs!

There were a few put their bodies on the line in both teams yesterday Larry, sure there will be some aches this morning. Great game, good crowd and setting, what Junior football is all about.

Mcpherson was a tremendous central defender in the adl and all being well has ten good years ahead of him at this level. Gem of a lad too .

The boy is still learning his craft. He has settled in very well at Talbot and hopefully he doesn't let his form waver. Decent big guy too
