Best Beer Garden in Scotland

Where is the best beer garden in Scotland? Opening nomination: The Old Inn in Appin - amazing pub, amazing food but the views of Castle Stalker and Loch Linnhe from the beer garden on a good day are incredible.

The Applecross Inn has fantastic views from the outside seats but it's not really much of a garden.

Ruined by that pint, though.

Can't beat a Scottish beer garden, a load of plastic furniture strewn around a crumbling concrete patio next to some overflowing bins.

My English missus always complains about the lack of and poor standard of beer gardens here. Suppose the climate doesn't lend itself to them that much.

I still don't know how they get away with using that as a smoking area, I thought a smoking area had to be open to the elements on three sides.

The Rhoderick Dhu in Glasgow has a smoking area that's inside the pub but has no roof.

Guy from my work calls it the Roy Castle Suite.

The smoking ban fundamentally changed the idea of beer gardens.  From that point, pubs that could accommodate an area like the above, with cover, heating and screens became more profitable than ones that couldn't do so.  A lot of pubs that also lost business due to smokers no longer coming to the pub to drink were also those that couldn't incorporate a smoking area.  Groups of people standing in front of a pub smoking can often be a hindrance to attracting customers.  The expense of installing these new features also favours large chains.

People that like beer gardens are responsible for the job losses, and the economic and social impact of losing community pubs.

It actually feels colder than outside at the Castle Tavern. The wind seems to get funnelled in and the wood burner gives off fuckall heat.

Dores Inn

And the other end of the loch. Used to be great food too until some locals bought it off the Turkish family who were running it. Shite the last time I was there.

Best I've been to is Laings in Dundee.  Bit of a trek back to the bar though and not sure if everyone still pishes behind the bushes at the end of the garden these days.

Was just going to say laings. Not been in for ages though but mind it was a trek to the bar
